A New York City police officer was shot in the face while chasing a suspect Tuesday, but is expected to survive, police said.

Kevin Brennan, 29, was chasing Luis Ortiz, 21, through a Brooklyn housing project when he was shot in the face after responding to a call of shots fired around 9 p.m., The Wall Street Journal reports.

The New York Times reports that two shots were fired near an entryway of the Bushwick Houses with one of the bullets hitting Brennan, according to Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman.

Brennan was taken to Bellevue Hospital where they found the bullet lodged in his skull near his ear. They were able to successfully remove the bullet, police said, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Even though Ortiz was apprehended and has charges pending officers were looking for him until at least 11 p.m., The New York Times reports.
