A Louisiana mother has been arrested on charges for negligent homicide after she allegedly left her four children alone in a mobile home who all later died in a fire, police said.
Capt. Doug Cain, a spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety, told the Associated Press that he is not sure where Shaqueta McDade, the 27-year-old mother, was when the fire started some time before 12:00 a.m.
The children died in the town of Rayne in southern Louisiana and were ages 2, 5, 7, and 8, but McDade's oldest child, Tyron, was staying with relatives when the mobile set ablaze, The Advertiser reports.
Rayne police officers arrested McDade after they interviewed her because they suspected that she left the children unattended, the Associated Press reports.
Neighbors have had trouble in the past with McDade leaving her children alone. Crystal Douga called the police last month because she caught the 2-year-old walking around outside in the middle of the night, The Advertiser reports.
