Off to Law School
Today I sent in my deposit to William Mitchell Law School. In about 5 months I will be studying in St. Paul and on to a new phase in my life. I was pretty nervous sealing the envelope and putting it in the mailbox. Being myself I waited until practically the last minute to mail it in because it is due Tuesday in their hands. I wish you better time management when applying to schools because it can be a nerve-racking feeling to wait until the very last possible day so let a school know you are coming. My advice to you, send in your deposits soon because the sooner you do the sooner you can get your housing, registration, and other fun information. Sadly it is time for me to move on to a new project. Check back soon and perhaps I will have new information about my law school escapades.
Spring Break in Marco Island, FL
After being in Marco Island, Florida for a week, it has been a hard transition back to the snow and cool weather. My spring break this year was amazing. This is the first year I have gone on a trip for it; the past three years I have gone home to work for my parents at our Dairy Queen. I went with a friend from my hometown and her family. We stayed in a house on a canal that was connected to the ocean and it had an in-ground pool and hot tub. The Tiger Tail beach complex was only about two blocks away and the sand at the beach was super fine and soft. Almost every day it was in the mid 80s and sunny so of course I got lots of sun and time to swim. I suggest that every student should go on spring break somewhere because it is a very relaxing event in the middle of a hectic semester. It was tough to fly back to Minnesota to a snow storm but I think I am beginning to transition back. I have about half a semester left here at UMM and I know it is going to fly by. Below are a couple pictures from my spring break…the first one is the group I went with on break at a Minnesota Twins spring training game (by the way they won; hooray!) and the second one is a picture with the four girls on the trip on the beach on Marco Island. In both pictures I am on the far right.

Law School
After waiting over a month I finally heard from a law school. I was accepted to William Mitchell Law School in St. Paul, MN. It is such a relief to be accepted to at least one of the ten schools to which I applied. Many of my friends will be attending a job and internship fair in Minneapolis early next week but I had decided not to go because I knew I wasn't looking for a job; I was looking for law schools. I was nervous because I did not have a back up plan if I didn't get into law school, but thankfully I don't need one now. I know I will be attending law school in August of this year and that is a great feeling. I hope that I will hear back from the rest of the schools soon.

The New Semester Begins!
Well the first full week of the semester has gone by and I think I changed my class schedule about six times before I settled on my current schedule. As a senior I have a lot of flexibility in my schedule because the only requirement I have is that I need to take at least eleven credits to graduate.
I decided to take a history course on the crusades, a political science course on media in politics as well as a computer science web programming course and a studio art course in printmaking. The cool thing about my studio art course is that it is only for non-majors so I won’t be overwhelmed by people with a lot more talent than myself. I decided to take my web programming course because I wanted to have some training in web design before going out into the job market and I am pretty sure that that kind of training will not be offered by law school I will be in over the next couple of years. I am really excited that this is my last semester at UMM. I will be sad to leave UMM but I am looking ahead to the future and seeing bright things.

UMM Goes Green...again!
I have been planning to write about the Environmental Studies major that will be new this fall at UMM for quite a while but haven’t accomplished much until now. I am sure many of you will be excited to hear that this cool major is coming to Morris. After thorough discussion and analysis of possible options for UMM’s Environmental Studies major the Campus Assembly gave the go ahead for the major to in start fall 2008.

The major draws from departments and disciplines from across campus by incorporating science, social science, humanities/fine arts, and education courses. The really special “green” initiatives here such as the Center for Small Towns, the vibrant local foods movement, the wind turbine and new biomass facility provide students with the opportunity to gain hands on cutting edge “green” technologies and program experiences. The newly created Sustainability Coordinator position also allows students to work with an expert in the field.
This program will definitely have Environmental Studies students as well as their future employers feeling satisfied with their well-rounded Liberal Arts education that focuses in Environmental Studies. I know if I were here for another four years I would consider a double major in environmental studies and Political Science because I know I could put both to use in my future career as a lawyer.
Hooray for UMM and future Environmental Studies graduates!

Senior Projects and the Undergraduate Research Symposium
Today I attended four English senior seminars and last week I attended an Economics/ Management senior seminar. It is getting to that time of year again during which senior project presentations are recurring agenda items. If students come to visit during a time of frequent presentation it can be a good idea to see what seniors are doing in their or other fields at UMM. I think it allows prospective students a peak into the future life as a college student as well as see what a projects they could work on if they are interested. To date I have attended a Biology, Political Science, as well as the ones I listed before; all have been superb displays of UMM’s excellent academics.

Another great opportunity many of these seniors and any other students who have participated in research may participate in is the Undergraduate Research Symposium held in the spring each year. Student across the campus present research, creative work, and art performances to an audience that includes an audience beyond the limits of our campus. Some years the President of the University Of Minnesota and some Regents have been in attendance. This years Undergraduate Research Symposium is set for April 4, 2008. Click Here if you are interested in more information about it.

Summer Time Wishes
Today we had the first zero temperature day of the winter season and you could tell people, myself included weren't ready for it. Instead of the cold I reminisce to this past summer and the warm days working in admissions with my friends. We worked full time doing random projects around the office and had lots of fun doing it. One particular day we hosted a work potluck over lunch for the staff of admissions and financial aid. We, the student workers, made a brunch feast that was completely delicious and a huge hit with the rest of the office. Another time we were sent out to take pictures to hang in the entry-way of Behmler Hall. That time we went to East Side park and played on the playground equipment while we took action shots. Later in the summer we took different pictures in the greenhouse and conservatory by the science building. The picture below is a selection from inside the greenhouse with all the student workers from admissions and financial aid. If you ever get a chance to check out the conservatory or greenhouse be sure to do so because not only are they beautiful, they are warm and fun. Another really cool aspect of the conservatory is the wild life. There are finches that fly around the trees and huge goldfish in the pond. Who wouldn't want to hang out in the middle of winter with a bird and a fish? Well I must forge onward out into the cold winter air of Morris. Have a great day!

Application frustration
During the last few days I have been attempting to write a personal statement for my law school applications. It has been a very challenging experience for me because I am having trouble putting into words the diverse reasons I want to attend. I am sure many of you are writing essays for college and scholarship applications therefore you can understand my frustration. I think the frustration is rooted in the fact that I have so many other pieces of homework I should be doing that I can’t focus on this really important piece of law school apps. My plan was to get a statement done by last Wednesday but now that is Sunday I just want to get a copy done before I go home for Thanksgiving break. Wish me luck and I will wish you luck on your’s.

Thoughts On Thanksgiving
Well I think we all survived Halloween and I know most students wait in anticipation for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the single greatest moment of fall semester. As a college student you will understand that a day devoted to homemade food means weeks of leftovers. Now as a prospective student you probably don’t appreciate leftovers but you sure do as a college student. I can’t wait to go home and spend a day with my family enjoying a well prepared HOT meal. Now don’t get me wrong I can prepare a mean quesadilla or bowl of soup and grilled cheese sandwich but it just isn’t the same as turkey or tofurkey, mashed potatoes, bread, stuffing, pie and all the other yummy goodies. I spoke to my sister who is a senior in high school right now about this very topic over the weekend. She was more excited to spend time with the family than the food but that’s because she has hot meals prepared almost daily for her. So if you are like my sister, remember to appreciate this thanksgiving because when it is your turn to go away to college you will miss it a lot more.

Who Am I?
Since this is one of my first posts I should give a little background information about myself. I am a senior Political Science major. I graduated from Wabasha-Kellogg High School in 2004 and have loved UMM since the moment I stepped on campus during my first visit almost 6 years ago. I am involved in the Campus Ambassador Program and Morris Campus Student Association as well as participating in campus governance for the past 2 years. After I graduate this spring from UMM, I will be attending law school. I hope I could provide you with so information to get to know me better. If you have any questions feel free to comment and I can get back to you right away.

Environmental Studies
Below is a picture of the wind turbine on the hill behind the Pomme de Terre. It is a great example of our committment to the environment.

I love UMM!!
