Twin Cities League of Youth (aka Pissed Off) Voters

Visit the Homepage for more info

Endorsement Slate Introduction

Who we are…We are young people from the Twin Cities who are pissed off at politics as usual and want to have a say in the policies that govern our lives. There are a whole lot of us, and if politicians want our votes they need to get serious about the issues we face every day.

What we want… At the end of the day, what we want is simple—a fair chance to get an education, a job and a place to live in a safe and sustainable world regardless of sex, race, class, identity or ability. We pay taxes, we vote and we want to live in a country that respects young people and invests in us to succeed. We're not asking for handouts. We're demanding fairness and smarter priorities.

We did the research…And man was it a lot of work! Here are the candidates we think best reflect the needs and values of young people in the Twin Cites. But as LeVar Burton always said, “You don’t have to take my word for it—We HIGHLY encourage you to do your own research as well!

“Your One Vote

An Original Play by Intermediate Acting

This work expresses our concern for our future. Please join us!

If you are visiting our site:

Welcome to the midterm digital story assignment posts for our course.

Digital Storytelling is the practice of using digital media (computer-based technology tools) to tell stories.

Digital Storytelling is the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights. Tell your story now digitally. - Leslie Rule, Digital Storytelling Association

Our students started by reading Co-Instructor, Professor Walter R. Jacobs' ghostbox: a memoir, as a way to "conjure up our personal and social ghosts" (which is great material for stories). We used Joe Lambert's approach to digital storytelling at the Center for Digital Storytelling in the Bay Area.

Students learned about types of stories, did writing (using image-based prompts), shared their stories in a story circle, and learned Final Cut Express. What you see below (and under the category 3. OUR STORIES [midterm projects] are their first projects. Few students came in with technical or storytelling experience and others are brand new to creative writing, storytelling, and digital media.

ENJOY! and leave our students comments!

Slip of the Tongue originated when I was asked to participate in a filmmakers conference in Connecticut in 2005. In order to go, I had to produce a one minute PSA that incorporated the theme of how youth are making a difference. Being a lover of spoken word, I wrote out a vague treatment about how many youth utilize poetry to change the world through self-expression. The organizers of the conference immediately rejected my treatment and told me that I needed to have a solid story line. Then one day, the idea suddenly came to: I would take a poetry recording and apply images to it. The slam poem “Slip of the Tongue by my friend Adriel Luis stood out to me since it actually told a story and was structured just like a film with an introduction, conflict, climax and resolution. And so after 2 weeks, I finished my 1 minute PSA, and eventually, it turned into a complete 4 minute short.

by Mireille Miller-Young, PhD, Assistant Professor of Women's Studies, UC Santa Barbara
Made as part of her course "Black Feminist Multimedia", this short video is about the problematics of desiring ourselves, once, as women of color our bodies have already been colonized. How can we decolonize our bodies and still engage them in the pursuit of self-authored desire, pleasure, and representation?

Short film on John Turnipseed (Founder of local Blood gang, turned life to God and community)

UVfilmonjohn.jpg

This story is very important in understanding a majority of our people in urban neighborhoods. It is a very important film on the life of a Central Neighborhood lifelong resident. John grew up in South Minneapolis and was involved in gang leadership, eventually becoming a repeat prisoner. Beginning with his father and extending to his grandson, four generations have been: shot, in prison, high school drop-outs, violent, deadbeat dads, un-fathered. Thirty (30) extended-family members are in prison, (10) for murder, and form The Rolling 30 Blood Street gang.

This is the story of the experience of most current and former prisoners from urban neighborhoods. John spent 10 years in prison, over three terms . But he came into The Fathering Center at Urban Ventures as our first client, and now has built a program that reaches 600 men a year, and 200 women. His work has attracted the Amicus organization to select him their first Everyday Hero featured in a TPT public television series. Therefore:

Please be our guest for the world premiere of "Turnipseed", the first in a series of 3 short films about the life of John Turnipseed, a powerful story about the redemption of a feared gang leader. Many gifted local and international film industry professionals came together for this collaborative effort between Five Stone Media, Awaken Films and Urban Ventures. Among them are Clarke Peters and Larry Gilliard, Jr. from the critically acclaimed HBO series “The Wire, who dramatically play the two lead characters in the film. "Turnipseed" was filmed entirely in Minneapolis and St. Paul, with many scenes taking place in our very neighborhood where its namesake, John Turnipseed, has spent much of his life.

Through this groundbreaking effort, 5-Stone Media, Urban Ventures and Awaken Films have laid out a clear vision of cultural change and transformation. "Turnipseed" has the potential to affect the lives of thousands of incarcerated and newly released prisoners, as well as offering an alternative to young men who currently see crime and gang life as their only choice.

The astonishing true story of John Turnipseed's life and ministry simply had to be told. We would be honored to have you as our guests at the premiere of this truly revolutionary film. See "Turnipseed", part one in a trilogy, and hear our vision and plans for the future. It will change many lives... it just might change your life!

Your RSVP goes to: turnipseedworldpremier@urbanventures.org , or to Deanna Martin at 612-638-1004

White Teacher

This is a story examining my time teaching in Brooklyn, New York. Through layering of images, voice, and music, I try to explore my memories as I've stored them in my mind. In many ways my memories are limited focusing only on certain aspects. This story is an attempt to open up that past and perhaps re-remember these moments in new ways in order to reshape how I view myself now.
