Natalie Olbrantz-Sketchbook Post #2

This is the start to my drawing of Lucy Terry Prince. I am using pencil on white drawing paper. The concept of this design is the idea of identity. Lucy Terry was (like mentioned before) stolen from African and moved to the United States therefore I am portraying her both in America, and in Africa. She is looking at a reflection of herself as the person she would have been in Africa.

I'm glad you went with this concept... I think it's a lot stronger than the infant idea. Your drawing looks great, I could instantly tell which was the reflection which is sometimes hard to portray. great work!

I think your concept is strong, the narrative comes through clearly. I would push the compositional and design aspects to create a stronger visual. Right now the composition is central and straight forward, try to think of ways to make it more engaging through unconventional or unexpected design (perhaps you play around with the mirror perspective) or even in the way you utilize design in the fabrics and backgrounds. Just a thought.

I also agree that your concept works well for your person. The one thing you could work on is the hands, but for the most part, you have a great start. :)

That's a good idea. The reflection idea is key.

Hi Natalie! First I want to say thanks for such a nice comment about my piece. I was kind of nervous about the concept, but thanks for the support. I appreciate it. ;)

Yours is looking great! It would be awesome if her reflection could be in color to show an interesting contrast, but since we can't, maybe use a different medium?! That would be cool.
