3rd Annual Ojibwe Language College Quiz Bowl

3rd Annual Ojibwe Language College Quiz Bowl - April 4th, 2009

"Endo-gikendasojig (The Very Smart Ones )," a team of students from the University of Minnesota, won first place at the 3rd Annual Ojibwe Language College Quiz Bowl held on April 4th, 2009 a University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus. They defeated "Miijin, (Eat Something)," a team from two-time defending champion school, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC).

Nine teams from seven schools with Ojibwe Language programs participated in this year's competition. Schools include the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, College of St. Scholastica, Bemidji State University, University of Wisconsin - Superior, Augsburg College, and Minneapolis Community and Technical College. The Quiz Bowl was moderated by FDLTCC Language Instructor Dan Jones, and co-judged by MCTC Language Instructor Rick Gresczyk, and community elder Ramona Manuel. Each participating team submitted 50 quiz bowl questions compiled from a resource list regarding Ojibwe grammar, terminology, grammatical structure, and inflection questions.

Schools also selected team names in the Ojibwe such as “Ozaawaa – Amoog (The Yellow Jackets)” of UW- Superior, “Bimibaatoo Migizi (Flying Eagle)” and “Jejiibajikiig (The Elephants)” of St. Scholastica, and “Gaa-bakinaagejig (The Winners)” of Bemidji State.

The teams Endo-gikendaasojig and Miijin faced off in an earlier round, giving Miijin its first tournament loss and sending them to the elimination bracket. Miijin would go on to defeat “Weshki-ayaa’aag (The Young Ones)," a UMN team they beat in a previous round, " followed by a victory over fellow FDLTCC team, "Miskwaa-Animikiig (Red Thunder)", but would come up short against the undefeated Endo-gikendaasojig in the final match. The tournament lasted nearly five hours of intensive competition. Miskwaa-Animikiig would take third place after beating Weshki-ayaa’aag. Trophies for the top finishing teams were provided the College of St. Scholastica, and T-Shirts for all participants were provided by Fond du Lac Tribal and Communuity College.

We would like to thank all of teams, coaches, schools, and community member who came out and supported this year's competition, and would like to acknowledge everyone who participated in this event. Next year's host of the Quiz Bowl will Fond du Lac Tribal College and we hope to see everyone there!
