Assistantship Funding for 2009-10 Academic Year

The College has further clarified graduate assistantship funding for next year. The pay plans in place for the 2008-09 academic year will remain in place for the upcoming 2009-10 academic year. For American Studies that means teaching assistants will make 17.75 per hour and teaching instructors will make 18.75 per hour. Please contact Colleen with any questions.

Teaching and Teaching Assistantship Offers

The first round of teaching and teaching assistantship offers have been sent out. We hope to be able to make additional offers as enrollments change. For those of you who have received offers, you will note that Colleen used the University base rate for Graduate TA's, because she had not heard that CLA would be able to sustain the increase to the base (1.00/hr over U base) that they provided last year. However, the Chief Financial Officer of CLA just confirmed that they are able to offer the increase to the base.

Teaching and Teaching Assistant Application Deadline

Last Friday Laura sent an email to each person who submitted an application for the Teaching and Teaching Assistant pools for next year. Please remember you must submit application (s) to be eligible for an assignment. We were surprised by the low number of applications so we have extended the deadline to Friday, May 1, 2009.

CLA Graduate Student OLLI Course Leaders

CLA and the University of Minnesota’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) are offering a $1000 honorarium to CLA graduate students selected as OLLI course leaders. Deadline for Fall 2009 course suggestions is June 24, 2009.

To apply for a TA-ship next year, please complete the attached application (s). One is for assisting in the classroom, the other for teaching. CLA Graduate Research Partnership Program

American Studies is able to award CLA Graduate Research Partnership Program (GRPP) fellowships to four students currently enrolled in the Ph.D program. The fellowship includes a summer stipend of $4,000, and research funds up to $500. The deadline for application is Thursday, April 2, 2009.

"Erickson Graduate Fellowship in Law and History Summber 2009"

The Program in Law and History announces the “Erickson Graduate Fellowship in Law and History Summer 2009” application. The Fellowship provides a summer stipend of $4,000 and up to $500 for research expenses. All CLA graduate students are eligible. Application deadline: March 27, 2009.

Preliminary Portfolio Examination/Preliminary Written Examination Deadlines

The American Studies department announces the "Audrey Christensen Award" application. All American Studies graduate students may apply for the $500.00 grants for the purchase of books for use in research and study. Deadline is Monday, March 30, 2009.

The American Studies department announces the "Mulford Q. Sibley Graduate Fellowship for Summer Research Support" application for pre-ABD students in their first and second year. $2,000 per fellowship for up to three fellowships may be awarded. Deadline Monday, March 30, 2009.

Extended Deadline for Josie Fowler Peace and Justice Prize

The Graduate Awards Committee has extended the deadline for the Josie Fowler Peace and Justice Prize. The $250 book prize is awarded to a student whose research is in the areas of labor history, Asian immigration, the history of the American Left, the pursuit of peace, or other topics that are related to work on social justice and change. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is Offering an Honorarium

The U of M's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) in an effort to encourage CLA graduate student involvement is offering a $1000 honorarium to CLA graduate students. OLLI is a membership-based learning community of older adults who attend seminars, talks, and other events. Application deadline for teaching a six week course in the winter: Oct. 20, 2008. Deadline for the eight week spring 2009 course: Jan. 5, 2009. Deadline for the eight week fall 2009 term: June 24, 2009.

Submitting Dissertations Electronically

Effective Oct. 2008, doctoral students who submit their dissertations electronically will no longer be required to submit a paper copy to the Graduate School, or pay the related $20 binding and shipping fees.
