spot and follows

The two leads are different in that the second day lead has more detail than the first day lead. In the main news story some of the information from the first day is summarized a lot more to make room for the more detailed information that surfaces in the day story. The second story gives updates on the victims conditions and also the information that has been given out by the police. It also has a few more quote sources that are worked into the story. The second-day story is not a response to a competing news organization, it is a follow up to a story by this organization that appeared earlier on. They build on their own information, and in this case do not directly site any outside competing sources.

11 year old accused of murder

An 11 year old boy faces adult charges of murder in the shooting death of his father's pregnant girlfriend. The boy allegedly used his own youth model shotgun and shot her in the back of the head while she was sleeping in her bed. In Pennsylvania anyone over the age of 10 accused of murder is charged as an adult. The boy is in the fifth grade and police came to his school to make the arrest. The victims body was found by her 4 year daughter, who then called landscapers working near the house, who then called the police. The whole situation is a nightmare, as the boy faces up to a lifetime sentence in prison. At this point there is an on-going investigation into the murder, but it is believed that it was no accident according to the district attorney. The boy's name is being withheld because he is a juvenile. The suspect was not the son of the victim but instead the son of her boyfriend and was living with them at the time. The boy faces multiple counts of murder because the victim was eight months pregnant at the time of the shooting and the baby died moments after the shooting due to a lack of oxygen.

Prison escape

Someone walking by the Athens prison on Sunday afternoon may have thought there was a movie being shot there as they watched a helicopter scoop up two inmates from on top of the prison. This was no movie however, and two inmates did escape the prison, and still have not been found. One of the inmates, Nikos Paleokostas, has now escaped from prison twice via helicopter. The helicopter was apparently hijacked at the airport and then driven to the prison where it picked up the inmates. The pilot of the helicopter was later found near the deserted helicopter bound and gagged, but with no injuries. Prison guards did fire shots at the helicopter but no injuries were reported. The first time that Paleokostas escaped from prison via helicopter he was able to remain unseen for many months before being recaptured by police. There is currently a manhunt for both of the inmates, but so far neither have been found.

Bubble doesn't burst

The Gophers Men's Basketball team has been in desperate need of a win lately, and they finally got one at home Sunday night in front of a sellout crowd at Williams Arena. The Gophers beat Northwestern 72-45 to improve to 20-7 on the season. This equals their win total from last season and also locks in Tubby Smith's 16th straight 20 win season. The Gophers outplayed the Wildcats in nearly every facet of the game, an all-around good performance.
This win gets the Gophers back on track for an invitation to the NCAA tournament in March. Assuming the Gophers can win a few more games this season, they should make the tournament, something that Gopher fans are excited about. Coach Smith went to his bench early in the game Sunday due to a lack of hustle from his starters. The bench brought a spark to the team and put the Gophers ahead to stay. The Gophers now face a difficult game against the Illini at Illinois Thursday evening. The Gophers won an earlier season matchup against the Illini but it was their first win against them in around a decade. That game was also at home, this game is on the road, and at a difficult place to play. The Illini are ranked #18 in the country right now and no doubt haven't forgotten their loss to the Gophers earlier in the season.

Harding gets victory

The Minnesota Wild earned a victory at home over one of the best teams in hockey Saturday night when they beat the Detroit Red Wings. After that game the Wild immediately went to the airport and flew to Chicago to face a very difficult Blackhawk team with no rest. The odds certainly were not in the Wild favor, at least not until backup goalie Josh Harding took things into his own hands.
Harding notched his first victory since November and made 44 saves as the Wild beat Chicago 2 - 1 Sunday night. The 44 saves are a career high for Harding as well, some of those saves were nothing short of spectacular. He even got notice from head coach Jacques Lemaire who said Harding was fantastic Sunday night. Peter Olvecky scored his first NHL goal for the Wild and Dan Fritsche scored for the second time in three games. The Wild picked up four crucial points over the weekend and moved themselves into a playoff spot in the ever so tight Western Conference. The Wild have a few games in hand on most of the teams that are around them, but gaining points against teams like Chicago and Detroit are hard to come by, and are huge for a team that was off and on as of late.
Now the Wild will have a day off before preparing to play the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night at the Excel Engery Center. Weekends like this sometimes get teams going in the right direction, lets hope that is the case for the Wild.

Twins trade for Crede

New Twins third baseman, Joe Crede, faced injury questions before he even took the field. Crede answered questions before he took the field for his first practice as a Minnesota Twin on Sunday.
Some questions were asked about his health, like how healthy he was now, after his second back surgery in as many seasons. Crede said he is close to 100 percent and that he can do everything except running at this point.
The team isn't hoping for a lot of running, instead they hope to see Crede lightly jogging around all the bases after his hopefully many home runs. The Twins are trying to add power to a third base position that has been lacking power for years.
Crede also brings an excellent glove to the team, something that has been commonplace for recent Twins teams.
Crede will look to return to his all-star self this season, and do so for a team that was formerly an arch rival. He will now swing against the White Sox, the team that knocked the Twins out of the playoff picture last season, on the last day of the season. He signed a one-year contract worth $2.5 million but that could go up to $7 million based on the number of at bats Crede gets this season.

Structure

In the Marshawn Lynch story the reporter first explains what Lynch was arrested for. He then summarizes what the police report and police told him. He keeps that part short, only a few sentences.
After that he gives some information from Lynch's lawyer, followed by the time of booking and of bail posting. He then gives a quote from the NFL, followed by a summary of a recent gun incident in the NFL, followed by a quote from Lynch's team the Buffalo Bills.
Finally he goes to Lynch's past history with the law, including details of a hit and run Lynch was involved in last summer. He also mentions another incident when Lynch was in college, where he was involved as a victim of a drive by shooting.
The last piece of information is Lynch's stats from the previous NFL season.
I think he ordered it like this because Lynch has been in the news before and has an image that relates him to trouble. People first want to know about his latest crime, followed by a reminder of his previous crimes. Mixing in some reactions from the NFL is good because people will want to know what disciplinary actions the NFL will take in this case. I think this was an effective way to present the information.
He could have done it differently and presented all of Lynch's crimes at the beginning and focused the story more about Lynch having problems with crime. However this way focuses the story on the current news, which is a good thing. Had the reporter taken the other approach it would have taken away from the current news.

7 Tons of Cocaine Confiscated

Drug running continue to use boats to traffic drugs into and out of other countries. This weekend the Mexican navy confiscated over 7 tons of cocaine off of a fishing vessel that was in international waters.
The United States Coast Guard acted in coordination with the Mexican navy according to Navy Secretary Francisco Saynez.
The Pacific ocean appears to be a central route for drug trafficking, especially cocaine trafficking. Last year the Mexican navy confiscated over 23 tons of cocaine on board a different ship, the largest shipment in the nation's history.
Officials had just announced they had confiscated over 2 tons of cocaine earlier this year in the same location. This is another reason it is believed the Pacific is a central trafficking route.

Artist Brown Sorry

Chris Brown said he was sorry for what transpired the a week ago on the night of the grammys. Brown was scheduled to perform that night but did not make an appearance, it was later revealed that Brown was arrested for apparently attacking a woman on a Los Angeles Street.
Reports have surfaced that the woman was his girlfriend and fellow musician, Rihanna. While these reports have not been confirmed by the police, there are strong sources suggesting it is the truth.
Rihanna was also scheduled to perform at the grammys, but she too cancelled the night of. She has since cancelled one of her shows in the wake of this incident.
Police said the woman who was attacked suffered visable injuries and identified Brown as the attacker. Rihanna has not made a statement and this was the first statement Brown has made since the incident occured.
Charges have not yet been filed against Brown, that decision is still up in the air.

Lynch Arrested

Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch is in trouble with the law again. Lynch was arrested in California Wednesday for possession of a concealed firearm.
Lynch was spotted inside of a car that was searched and then the gun was found. Lynch was the owner of the gun and was then arrested.
His agent said Lynch was in California to visit friends. Lynch was in trouble with the law last summer when Lynch's car struck a woman and then proceded to drive off. Lynch later agreed to a plea bargain and was not charged with anything.
This case could be different with the strict policy the NFL now has concerning guns. There have been recent off the field incidents in the NFL that have resulted in injured players.
The Bills did not offer up much of a comment as they are still trying to get to the bottom of the story.
Lynch is an emergin NFL star at only 22 years of age. He played in the pro bowl last weekend in Hawaii.

Wild have time to think

The Minnesota Wild will have 4 days to think about the devestating loss they suffered Saturday night at the Excel Energy Center. Up 3 - 0 after the first period, the Wild couldn't get anything else going and lost 5 - 3 to the Ottawa Senators.
This loss even prompted a visit from General Manager Doug Risebrough, whose comments were not full of anger but instead, of support.
The Wild play in the extremely competitive Western Conference where the Wild's loss on Saturday dropped then to tenth place. The Wild remain mere points from 6th place however, and will hopefully rebound from a loss that could come back to haunt them.
The Wild need to gain focus as they prepare to play 14 of their next 17 on the road. Wild players still believe they are as good as the other teams in the West, they just need to find the confidence to play like them.
Confidence is hard to come by when you are staring at a road trip as long as the Wild are.
They have 4 days to forget the loss Saturday and move on to a huge game against division rival Calgary Thursday at the Excel.

Gopher mens hockey get needed win

The Gopher mens hockey team had recently accomplished something that hadn't been done by them since 2000, they lost 4 games in a row. The team got a much needed 4 - 2 win at home Saturday night against the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves.
Minnesota Goalie Alex Kangas made only 15 saves but it was good enough to get the victory against the Seawolves.
Jordan Schroeder, Cade Fairchild, Jay Barriball, and David Fischer all scored for the Gophers.
The Gophers have played well recently, even better than they played Saturday night, but they haven't been able to get the wins.
"I can't say its the best game we've played the last four or five, but we won the game," said coach Don Lucia.
The Gophers moved within a point of 4th place and face a big road series against Colorado next weekend.
"Hopefully some of those guys will start loosening up and start having fun," said Cade Fairchild, who tallied a goal in Saturdays win.
It would be a good time for the Gophers to start playing well, with only 6 games remaining in the regular season and post-season bids on the line.

Attribution

In the story about the 150 stranded fishermen on the broken ice floe there were
Listed sources were CNN, Sheriff Bob Bratton, the National Weather Service, the United States Coast Guard, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Toledo Blade, Gary and David Vaughn, and Chief Petty Officer Robert Lanier.
The sources are all scattered throughout the story and mentioned when they are used. Some of the information is from the people but other information is from organizations like CNN and the National Weather Service. The way this attribution is set up it is very clear and effective. He basically goes through the story in order and just uses the attributions when they are talked about. Most are not referenced again and so there isn't much confusion in dealing with thinking back to who people or organizations were. All in all the attribution for this story is clean and clear.

Foster Returns

Wild Defenseman Kurtis Foster made his return to the ice Sunday night when he suited up for a minor league game in Chicago.
Foster played with Minnesota WIld minor league affiliate the Houston Aeros and logged right around 15 minutes according to himself. Foster broke his leg over 11 months ago while playing with the Wild and is just now getting back on the ice. He did say he was a little rusty but that can be expected with such a large time off the ice.
Foster can play up to 2 weeks with the Aeros before the Wild must call him up or send him to waivers.
The Aeros next game is later this week in Iowa. The Aeros won Sunday's game by a score of 6 to 3. Foster did not record any stats in the game but did get called for a penalty that led to a Chicago goal.

Jefferson Hurt in Loss

Minnesota Timberwolves superstar center Al Jefferson was injured in the closing seconds of a tough loss against the New Orleans Hornets Sunday evening. Jefferson came down on one leg and when he did his knee buckled.
Jefferson later told reporters that he heard a pop sound when he landed.
Jefferson is the heart and soul of the basketball team and it was easy to see that from the reaction of his teammates. "He's our main thing, the focus of what we do," guard Randy Foye said after the game.
Jefferson was not able to put any weight on the knee after the injury happened. He was helped off the floor very slowly by his teammates and went directly to the locker room.
After the game Jefferson did say the knee felt a lot better than it did moments after it happened. He also said the pain wasn't as bad as when he sprained his MCL last fall.
That is hopefully good news for the Wolves who have now lost 6 of 7. They led late in this game and were in it until the closing seconds, but in the end it is another tough loss, and potentially a devestating one.
The Wolves next game is Tuesday, a game Jefferson will likely miss. He will be re-evaluated on Monday morning, hopefully it is nothing more than a bruise.

Gopher Mens Hockey

The University of Minnesota Gopher mens hockey team is free-falling in the standings as of late. They have now lost 4 consecutive games, the last three were at home. To make matters worse the last 2 were suffered at the hands of arch rival Wisconsin.
Nothing appears to be going the gophers way as of late. They cannot find the back of the net even when they outshoot their opponent 2 to 1 like they did on Friday night against the badgers. When they do put the puck in the net their goalie gives up even more goals to the opponent.
The gophers were once ranked number one in the country this season but will now fall out of the top ten and are in danger of having much worse things happen to them. They are now ranked 7th in the WCHA standings and are in desperate need of change this weekend when Alaska comes to town.
Things are so bad that senior captain Ryan Stoa did not even address the team after Saturday's one goal loss. "There's really not too much you can say to cheer them up." Stoa said.
Head coach Don Lucia said there may even be a goalie change in order. "There are some thoughts," Lucia said, after being asked about the possibility of mixing it up.
The gophers need something to shake them up, or they are headed for a road they haven't been down in nearly a decade, missing the NCAA playoffs.

Australia's Bushfires

Bushfires in the state of Victoria are responsible for over 100 deaths and nearly 500,000 destroyed acres. The death toll is the highest in the history of Australia's bushfires, which are an annual occurance.
Drought conditions and temperatures reaching 118 degrees last week have made it nearly impossible to contain the fires.
Firefighters are doing the best they can to prevent the fires from spreading to more densely populated areas of the state like the capital of Melbourne.
Police have recovered bodies of victims inside of their cars as they tried to flee the flames. They have also found them inside the remains of their homes.
Over 640 homes have been destroyed by the blazes and that number continues to rise, along with the death toll.
There have been many donations made by people from all over the world, so many in fact that the donation centers are having trouble operating.
FIrefighters hope that falling temperatures and traces of rain Sunday will help them contain the fires. The fires appear to have been started intentionally by someone, but at this point police have no suspects.

Ice Float

Winds and warm temperature caused a large ice floe to break away from the mainland and strand 150 fisherman Saturday morning on Lake Erie.
Not all of the stranded were rescued as one man died as a result from falling into the icy waters. Another man who also fell into the water was rescued and brought to shore.
"These people should have known better," said Ottawa County, Ohio, Sheriff Bob Bratton, "if there was a section in the code about common sense, we would have had 150 arrests out there today."
The fishermen reportedly built a makeshift bridge over open water to get to the 8-mile long ice floe.
The National Weather Service issued a warning that there were potential conditions for ice floe's to break off. These conditions included warm temperatures and high winds from the south.
The remaining 150 people were rescued from the ice courtesy of helicopters, airboats, and hovercrafts. Sheriff Bratton estimated the cost of the rescue at $25,000 and also said it will probably go up from there.
"This just cost the taxpayers a ton of money," the sheriff said, " It's a same you can't arrest people for stupidity."

Phelps

United States gold medalist Michael Phelps issued an apology Sunday for his behavior in a photo that surfaced recently featuring him smoking a marijuana pipe. Phelps did not deny the event but instead said he, "engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgement."
Phelps has become popular worldwide after his record setting 8 gold medal performance at the 2008 summer games.
Phelps becomes yet another American athlete who will now be associated with illegal substances. Americans have watched athletes in all sports be convicted of steriods or illegal substances in recent years, and Phelps is no exception.
The United States Olympic Committee issued a statement Sunday saying that Michael had failed to fulfull his role model responsibilites but also that they were confident Phelps would now, "consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olypic champion."
Phelps had recently pledged to an anti-doping agency to keep drugs out of sports.
His fans can read his apology on his Facebook page where Phelps also posted his statement. Fans have had mixed reactions to the situation and have not been afraid to post their feelings on his page.

Leads

Leads work to get the reader's attention. Leads are responsible for sucking the reader in and ultimately for making them read the rest of the article. The lead usually has all the elements of the story. It tells the who, what, where, when, and why. What the lead does not do however is reveal details about the story. The specifics come after the lead for most articles. There are some exceptions of course, sometimes the writer may want to leave some of the elements for later on in the story. When this is the case the lead can leave the reader hanging, so they must read to know what happened. For the most part the leads are general, not telling names or specific locations. This can change depending on the story. If the story deals with a famous person like the president or a famous location like the mall of america, it may be stated in the lead. Overall leads are there to tell the story in its most general form and to make the reader want to read the story to get the details.
