Response to Crazed Fruit

This response will be a collection of thoughts regarding both the discussion of masculinity (and by duality femininity) as well as a couple of general things about the film given that time frame in which it was made compared to recently created.

Firstly, I want to touch on the films obsession with masculinity from the tough/cool guy appearance. In addition to the need to do something physical, like water skiing, we see things like lifting weights, and camera shots emphasizing the male figure (shot from the legs of a posed person overlooking the sea for example). This is furthered by the brothers calling each other puny and the needing to “man up”. We can see even further the overemphasis on masculinity in the objectifying of women. Taken for objects to the point of directly relating them to cards. Women are seen as a prize that states how manly the men are. Even further, the gang felt it was better to start a fight then sit around being bored.

I also wanted to discuss the difference between what we saw in previous movies and this movie in regard to what was allowed to be shown. Previously, women, and to a lesser extent me, have been more or less fully clothed. This was very different when we started seeing swimming suits in Crazed Fruit. This coincides with what I want to call a rampant cultural shift towards westernism. In Rashomon we were presented with a kiss (clearly indeed to be a rape scene), but as far as visual depiction goes, this scene felt timid even compared to a shot of two laying on the rocks beside another. Visual intense kissing/groping was also included, which leads me to wonder how risqué the movie was intended to be. Certainly a drastic step up in terms of what was allowed on film from our previous films.

The film “Crazed Fruit” is a depiction of the young generation in Japan in the 1950s, which faced similar situations as their contemporaries in Europe and America. They were born into a world just recovering from war and conflict, and a newfound wealth and middle class that in turn created problems that their parents' generation could never have imagined. Without the “common enemy” to rally against, the youth become bored and complacent. This new slacker lifestyle led to teenagers spending more free time in large groups and doing leisurely activities such as boating and card games. This also gave the young generation a chance to explore their sexuality and other feelings that would have been deeply buried in the past but were now becoming commonplace discussions. In the film the two brothers fall madly in love with the same girl, who herself is revealed to already have been married. The naïve younger brother cannot see what other members of his brother's social circle find plain, and takes everything the woman tells him at face value. His brother, on the other hand, knows the girl's deception and still will stop at nothing to have her, even at the cost of betraying his own brother. The lifestyle that allows for this sort of behaviour was only a recent development, and the consequences of such a lifestyle that the film attempts to portray culminates in the final scene: the younger brother, driven mad by jealousy and his brother's treachery, kills both his brother and his lover in a fit of rage. This is an extreme case of what may happen to the youth when left to their own devices.
Other films of the era, not just in Japan, showcase the ostracizing of the younger generation by parents and older people who cannot comprehend the problems that they face. To them the world is more clear cut, black and white, but the 1950s brought shades of grey, different standards of living, and, perhaps most frightening of all, the time to think and reflect on this life. Suddenly every little problem was significant, and the youth were the only ones who would go through and pioneer this change in lifestyle.

While this film is concerning itself somewhat with the sexual revolution, the woman is still viewed as an object to be had by the men. The final scene shows us that while this is supposed to be a new generation with new ideas there are still some recurring ideas from the past that resurface no matter what. Since the woman is viewed as an object rather than a living person both brothers view her as something to be competed over and to win. While this film has many similarities with more modern television shows and movies, aside from the final scene, the premise is actually more decadent with a love quadrangle between a married woman, her husband, and two brothers. The difference is that this is a time period where these new attitudes were just developing and were not commonplace. It was probably difficult to understand what to do in these new situations and how to deal with a kind of newfound freedom. Raine points out that this film, and others like it in Japan, were “part of a global cycle that included films made in France, the United States, and Britain.” This means that this kind of process, the development of a new subjectivity in the youth of Japan, was occurring in the youth of the West as well. This seems to correlate with the rise in global capitalism and probably was occurring in Japan due to the occupation by the United States and the Japanese acceptance of Capitalism as in ideology. Crazed Fruit also represents the idea of anti-humanism and according to Standish it “challenged humanism by exposing the ideological constructedness of reified romantic love by subverting it to carnal desire…” (Standish, pg. 223). He goes on to say that these films of the late 1950s, produced by Nikkatsu, were focused on displaying individuality through the body instead of something that was more spiritual in nature, i.e. romantic love.

I want to talk about the new/different ideas from the earlier films that we have watched. The role of sex is definitely larger and more open than it was in the past films. Also the introduction of different female character roles from the traditional conservative housewife that we have seen so far.

Sex is a main theme for this film as that is what is done for a majority of the film. It is also used as a standard for qualifying into "adulthood" or a similar status as the older brother and his friends. Haruji is always called the little kid or innocent little boy until he finds Eri, that he had met earlier in the film, and shows them all up at the party. Excluding Haruji, most of the other characters if not all have had some sort of sexual relationship, hence his nickname of kid. The sexuality is also heightened for the women; who were conservatively dressed in the other films that we have seen. There is the bathing suit, lots of legs and arms and shoulders; things that would have never been shown in a pre-war Japanese society. Then there is the sex itself, quite a bit of it too. It is not shown for the other characters but it is implied that they are sexually active, but the focus is more on the brothers and Eri. Also the female characters are not as conservative as one would think. There is the "slut," when Haruji tries to find his brother, who tries to hit on Haruji but has obviously been through with all the other guys as stated by his older brother. Then there is Eri, a 20 year old woman married to an older american man. She appears innocent much like Haruji in the beginning of the film, but as the movie progresses with the help of Natsu, the older brother, we learn about Eri. We not only learn that she is married to the American, but that she has had multiple affairs to boot. Thus starts the complicated love sex triangle between the brothers and Eri. The sexual atmosphere in Crazed Fruit is tense, brothers competing for one woman, Natsu sneaking into Eri's house for sex, Haruji's first time on the beach with Eri who has been sleeping with his older brother. It is a big mess of complications.

I don't really get Eri's character, I understand that she feels neglected by her husband and feels the need to have affairs but if she really loves Haruji why does she always willing to get it on with Natsu? I mean first it was blackmail for Eri, then she told Natsu never to come back and didn't care about the blackmail, but ultimately she gives herself up again to Natsu in the boat. Yet during all this time she claims that her heart belongs to Haruji, does she want both of them or what? Haruji for the emotional love she lost when she married and Natsu for the physical loving? As Natsu did ask how sex was with Haruji and she responded with a shake of her head, and he was like Yeah that's why I am the only one for you! Well these are definitely new female roles in film, less conservative and more rebellious.

There was also a part that I found really funny; it was the beginning of the film where Natsu and Haruji arrive at Frank's house. They start a discussion about having nothing better to do, the camera focuses in on the faces as they each speak individually much like the weed table in "That 70s Show." Then at the end of the discussion Frank's girlfriend is talking, she is agreeing with everyone else than all of a sudden out nowhere she asks if everyone wants to eat. That was an unexpected moment that I enjoyed with a few laughs.

This week I ended up completing my reading before watching the film, which I realize in retrospect as I write this quick response paper, was probably a mistake. Although Raine’s writing focuses more on Punishment Room and Ishihara’s writing rather than Crazed Fruit, it still gave me enough opinionated insight to influence my own viewing of the film. I was perhaps “biased” then as I wasn't really watching the film with totally fresh eyes. That being said, I found nothing noteworthy in this film. Particularly after reading all the comments Raine had made about the taiyozoku films, I was expecting to see some very experimental or unique film; something akin to the unique narrative structure of Quentin Tarantino films like that which is utilized in Pulp Fiction or Inglorious Bastards. These films, I thought, would serve as a perfect comparison to the sun tribe movies as their narratives are all heavily steeped in senseless violence and overt sexuality with narrative structures that take less consideration towards traditional film narrative. Instead what a saw here was definitely an exploitation film (Raine hints near the end of the article that one could classify these taiyozoku films as such). Particularly after watching masters like Ozu and Kurosawa, I found nothing particularly noteworthy or deserving of praise in Crazed Fruit. The only truly unique treatment of mise en scene or camera work is the use of grotesque close-ups; particularly in the scene near the beginning in which all of the male characters are interacting, and we get them one after another in such a succession that it really only makes the audience uncomfortable; hardly serving much of a narrative purpose. This seemed more an excuse to showcase controversy; more so in the plot than in what the camera shows. The story is packed with promiscuous sex, betrayal, and primal human emotion (or rather, the theory of it as the actors all actually display very little emotional information to the audience). Its because of these sensationalistic traits that any success would have existed, not because of skillful work from the filmmakers. Still, I suppose that since this marked an important change in Japanese cinema, signifying a shift away from the confines of traditional genre in Japanese film. Although this is an important accomplishment, Crazed fruit still leaves one wanting as it is all plot, no execution (there is very little of note in the cinematography, except for a few choice scenes such as the helicoptor shot of the motorboat circling the sailboat, which has a wonderfully creepy mise en scene, and Raine also notes in an eerily long take).

Response to Crazed Fruit
I have many thoughts on the film Crazed Fruit as it was the hardest movie for me to watch yet this semester, but I’ll do my best to stay rational. Emotionally, I hated the film. I, too have had a falling out with my brother and have not seen nor spoken to him since 2004 for the sake of maintaining the peace. A Japanese History professor once told me once that “there is no worse war known to man than those waged between brothers.” I’d have to concur with that statement. Although my brother and I are not arguing over a girl, the energy released when that bond that broken when one crosses the other as being comparable to nuclear explosions is instantly recognizable. Moving on, another disappointing feature of the film was the objectification of females as the possessions of rich men, representing women as much as commodities as their cars or speedboats. The Japanese Cinema text explains on page 228 how the “granting of political and legal autonomy to women under the terms of the postwar Constitution reverberated most strongly in a woman’s right to choose a marriage. As a result, the relationship between men and women within the political economy of marriage altered drastically… a woman’s place within the phallocentric economy ‘the sun tribe’ films is reduced to that of a fetish to be exchanged between men, her active status thus rendered harmless.” He goes on to say, “…[this film’s] women are inscribed into new ‘democratic’ systems of patriarchal exchange as their newfound assertiveness, their right choose a husband, is crushed at the most brutal level.” I agree on this point and it is unclear that this was intentional or simply the nature of women’s’ perceived role in Japanese society in the postwar period. Mythologist Joseph Campbell emphasized that some of the best stories from the present on back into antiquity have to do with rites in to manhood- an initiation into the larger group. Haruji’s naivety in the beginning of the film, yet by the end his character had morphed into masculinity in the form of rage and betrayal. The text refers to this scene in this way, “Haruji survives [the crash that kills the heroine, Eri, and his chonan brother] and has clearly gone through his ‘rite of passage’ but at the cost of becoming a murderer.”(p.229)
Lastly, I have to agree that the film was more radical and creative as far as technique, shooting angle, degree of close-up and intensity and speed of the dialogue than I was anticipating. In particular, I liked how the scene when Yujiro’s character dumps the drink (whiskey?) in to the aquarium. The political/social dialogue that ensued really got me. The camera jumps from character to character, seemingly inches from their face, staying only long enough to rapid fire their dialogue and moving on, strangely and abruptly ending with Frank’s girlfriend saying, ‘Anybody hungry? Let’s eat.” It was such a break from the rest of the movie until the infamous finale where Haruji is circling the sailboat of his brother and Eri. Another string of close ups: first the contorted face of Haruji, then the contorted face of his brother, then the contorted face of Eri, - repeat.
Some other correlations I noticed that deserve mention are how Frank’s character initially seems to be the guy that’s going to be causing the drama (examples: Haruji and parents discussion at home, plus the scene where he tries to give back the girl to a group of college wrestlers provoking her to walk out on him), yet Frank is the one who had the correct boundaries defined and tries to inform brothers of the misplaced emotions of the brothers. It is Frank that tells Haruji in the end the truth about Eri and his brother. Another interesting moment I hadn’t thought about the first time I saw the film was the poker seen at the beginning. The youths all sitting around eating and drinking and playing poker when one of them mentions that they should be playing poker with girls instead of money, further objectifying women, with Frank’s girl quietly saying nothing in the corner. This scene is where the idea for the party comes about and sets the demise of all involved in motion. Then, at the end of the movie, Yujiro’s character yells to Haruji, circling the couple in his boat, “I lose. You win. Eri is yours!” and he then attempts to push her into the water. My take on this scene which directly precedes the double murder, is that Yasujiro’s character had completely lost his eldest-son status from the perception of his little brother, thus making him a failure as a man, coupled with his remark that Yasujiro’s character was willing to betray his brother over a woman, then not defend the action when discovered. Chonan, or eldest son status, though not emphasized overtly in this film, is nonetheless a universal concept in the hierarchy of the Japanese family (in the Confucian model) that western audiences may not necessarily know about or notice. The killing of his brother, and stripping him of his masculine rank, was indeed Haruji’s passage into manhood, but at a staggering price. Killing Eri was because she was just as much a culprit in their demise as Yasujiro was – being married to an American, a “foreigner’s whore” he had called her, and having multiple affairs in the meantime.
Extremely depressing film for me personally, yet I can see the innovations and depth the film carries. I’d just rather not think about it again for a while.

The representation of gender roles and gendered interactions play out so bizarrely in the film. The woman only agrees with the men and reiterates what they say. Besides that, she really only talks to offer the men drinks and food, taking on her proper domesticated gender role so the men are left to the thinking. What I don't understand is how the men can just trash-talk about women in front of other women. There were a couple occasions where women smacked the men across the face because of their disrespectful behavior, but those times were very rare. Generally women just hung around men passively and subserviently waiting for a man to throw them any sort of attention. In the scene where we see neighbors gossiping about the guys, they talk about how as a generation they are less moral but the blame is mainly put upon the women. They talk about how the women should be ashamed for being sexually promiscuous rather than saying anything about the womanizing men. Any sort of kindness or camaraderie or understanding occurs between men. They talk very openly about their lives, thoughts, emotions; they've complimented each other on their looks. They give advise on another's problems and basically treat each other as people. Women are constantly portrayed as unimportant or uninteresting and there for only good for physical use and dismissal.

The relationship between Eri and the older brother is strange. There seems to be a mutual attraction while at the same time there's such violence. The two of them always seem crude towards one another. The older brother tells her he's fallen in love with her but he only focuses on ripping her clothes off and having more rights to her than Haru or Eri's husband. Then with Eri, she says she has real feelings for Haru but she shares much more intimacy with the older brother. It seems to me that rather than actually wanting to be with Haru, Eri was trying to live the innocent young love relationship she never had.

Aesthetically, I enjoyed watching this film more than most of the earlier films. There was a constant change of camera angel and a variety of shots. There's faster editing in "Crazed Fruit" than in almost all of the previous films we've watched. I was immediately interested in the opening shot with the extreme close up of Haru. The close-up is a strategy used in "Orochi" during scenes of heavy inner-dialogue and complex emotions. In "Crazed Fruit," close-ups still show intensity. However, now it's utilized with a film style that we're more used to that tries to draw the audience into the story rather than the benshi breaking down every thought.

Week 6

Crazed Fruit and the other “Sun Tribe” films of the 1950’s mark an important change in the style of Japanese cinema. One of the immediately obvious differences is pacing: Crazed Fruit is full of short scenes and abrupt cuts. The dialogue is quick-paced and to the point. Many scenes focus on action such as boating, driving, dancing, and fighting. English phrases, trendy Western outfits, and jazz music give the movie a modern feel. The characters flaunt their modernity right at the beginning of the film in a scene composed of close-ups of each youth denouncing the “old ways.”
The characters turn to action to distract them from their boredom, but they remain detached from the world around them. Half-American “Frank” is the epitome of a Sun Tribe youth: wealthy, bored, and aloof. He turns to sex to relieve his boredom and shows off his wealth with a tank of exotic fish, but he is indifferent when the fish die and his girlfriend leaves him. Frank, though well aware of the situation between Natsuhisa and Haruji, is not particularly interested in becoming involved. At the end, he tells Natsuhisa to give up on Eri, but ultimately he remains detached from the situation. Even the two brothers, whose passion for Eri leads to the film’s main conflict, prove to be emotionally detached at the end. Haruji, when he finds his older brother and girlfriend on a sailboat together, repeatedly circles them in his motorboat with a blank expression on his face. Natsuhisa, who had just confessed his love for Eri, concedes: he laughs and says that Haruji can have her. Eri jumps out of the sailboat, intending to return to Haruji. Haruji, however, is unmoved: his facial expression remains blank as he runs over Eri and then crashes into Natsuhisa’s sailboat.
In “Creation and Destruction of the Japanese Cinema,” Crazed Fruit is noted for its depiction of the “three S’s – speed, thrills, and sex.” The characters are used as objects and the film turns to action as the main focus. Both the script and the editing make excitement a main theme in Crazed Fruit.

Crazed Fruit was a rather dull film, until the end of the movie. The last thirty minutes were the most suspenseful. The story is like a 1950’s version of our teen sitcoms. I could have sworn I was watching the original ideas for the OC or Laguna Beach, or the original “I found out what you did this summer”, stories about rich kids with problems. This film was created during the Korean War, were Japan’s economy is on the climb from the destitute Japan went through after Word War II. I believe this is the reason that the filmmaker would show the middle/upper class idea of summer. The interesting thing that happens is that they introduce an American named Frank. Frank is a funny character that reminds me of a serious version of FES from That 70’s Show. Frank seems to have such a command of the Japanese language, which is shown on how the waiter at the club immediately switches to English after realizing Frank is American. Frank then responds in perfect Japanese, to impress the girls and also to belittle the waiter. The dance moves at the club, fantastic, I want to learn the slow hand clap, along with the offbeat finger snap. The funny thing about this story is that, in its basic form, it is a story that you could see as being a modern film, or as a jidaigeki like shinpa. You have 2 brothers wanting the same girl that’s married to a foreigner. About the end of the film, everyone got what they deserved, Haruji got his revenge, Haruji got to kill his brother for being a dick, and Eri gets what she deserved for not being truthful in the first place. Haruji is justified in his actions. The idea of the good guy gets the shaft, has been played all the way from, Orochi, in which it hasn’t stopped yet, because we believe we have to beat this dead horse to death in its afterlife. At the point you find out that Haruji’s brother gets Eri, you already know that Haruji will have to find out about the situation in the very end of the film.

Japanese Film

The bringing of the filmed showed the young rich people sitting around and talking, they got into some kind of an argument about how they live in boring times. But that is nothing too interesting, but interesting part is that during the arguments we see close-ups of people’s faces. Very strange shows for an argument. The impact that it has on the audience or me anyway was one of almost disgust with them. Nothing can turn an audience off from the characters other then close-ups of all of them in quick succession. The audience in the film would not like any of the characters for a few reasons. They were all cruel and rich. I’m not sure about the image of the rich in Japan at that time, but a film about rich kids being mean to each other just should make people mad at the rich.
As the film progresses we see that the only character who could be called good of any kind was the young brother haruji. It is him who gets picked on most of the film by his older brother and is eventually betrayed by his older brother as he steals Eri form him. The relationship of Eri with the brothers is a strange once. On the surface we see that she is cheating on her husband to go with haruji, but she has cheated on him before. Her story sounds sincere but then we see her lying all the time to everyone. While her appearance is mostly also the victim we must question how much of a victim she really is. She is doing this all herself. She is cheating purposefully on her husband, to go with younger people. She might also be something of a social climber, because she said she is twenty but she is married to a much older foreigner. Her innocence in the movie can be doubted, but she still takes on the air of the victim.
In the very end haruji who thinks everyone betrayed him (which they basically did) get revenge on his older brother and eri, by probably killing them for revenge. A very interesting scene because the innocent brother in the film is the one who ends up killing people for revenge.

What I found interesting about Tokyo Story was the way common methods used in film (and specifically in films we have viewed in class) are reused and built on.

First off, putting the end first. While we may not know it, the staring, wild expression worn by the boatman is the result of the movie to follow. Haruji is either twitching because he is still searching for his brother and Eri or he’s descended into madness after murdering the pair. Either way, it contrasts greatly with the Haruji seen in the next scene, arguing amiably with his brother. The whole rest of the movie then becomes a flashback of sorts. A variance of this was seen in Rashomon, looking back on the multiple stories, and Shiraito’s contemplation of her rather life changing moment in the carriage. Arguably, we are much less aware of this interplay of time in Crazed Fruit and are left wondering about the two conflicting Harujis and what is to come.

Secondly, the play of light and shadow as seen in Rashomon to show the mixture of darkness present in humans. Similarly, the scene where Natsuhisa forces himself on Eri the fountain reflects the lights from the club to splash their faces with shifting shadows. Likewise, a close shot of each face shows the hungry gaze of the man and the ‘curious despite herself’ gleam in the woman’s eyes. It seems to have become the first alert that morally questionable things are about to occur. Though, times have changed enough that the immorality is no longer shown through nature, but by human constructs.

The new wardrobe also plays a big role. We had previously seen characters moving beyond their traditional Japanese clothing in Ozu’s more modern movies. Even then, the women are still wearing rather restraining skirts, similar to what they already wore. Tokyo Story, however, shows some skin. Loose and flowing skirts and bathing suits open the playing field before covered in layers of fabric. Now, the visual of uncrossing the legs comes with all kinds of sexual hints and connections. Japanese women would, beneath their yukata and kimono, have previously had no need to cross their legs for propriety. But now that it is easier to get up their skirts, the legs cross…and uncross during certain scenes to demonstrate Eri’s desire. Both when lying next to Haruji on the rock and during their kiss on the beach, the camera closes in her feet and watches them uncoil.

Of the movies we’ve watched in this class so far this semester, Crazed Fruit is definitely the most “Western,” in terms of both its style and its content. In both cases, this is probably due to Nakahira’s desire to break away from traditional Japanese cinema, as was mentioned in the reading.
As far as style is concerned, the influence of Hollywood and the French New Wave seem to stick out pretty noticeably. Traditional Japanese cinema, as seen in some of the older films we’ve watched in this class, seems to emphasize mise-en-scene and camera placement, relying on a comparatively stationary camera, longer shots, and longer takes. Kurosawa has his own thing going. Crazed Fruit, on the other hand, seems to emphasize the form as part of the content of the scene, with a constantly moving camera, rapid editing, and extensive use of canted framing and close-ups. Many of the scenes in this film begin with a close-up shot of some object, slowly pulling back or panning to the side to reveal the characters or the scene of action while it is already taking place; the cut from the shot of Frank ordering drinks to the shot of him dancing at the “Blue Sky,” for example, is unlike anything we have seen in any of the other movies in this class so far.
Frank, for that matter, is a good example of the very visible Western presence in the film’s content. The American characters all serve as motivations or causal factors for the other character’s actions, without taking any direct action themselves. One of the boy’s complains that they are “always cleaning up Frank’s messes”; Frank basically acts as an enabler for both brothers while trying not to get directly involved in their predicament; almost everything used in the film is somehow connected to him (his car, his boat, his house, etc.). Even Eri’s husband, or rather his absence, is what motivates Eri to cheat, and to lie to Haruji. Whether this is an underhanded criticism of the occupation, or of the Western influence on the “Sun Tribe” generation, or not even criticism at all, the Western presence in the content itself, either through characters, speech, dress, or behavior, certainly reflects the influence of Western culture and cinema in Nakahira’s attempt to get past the “frightening stagnation of the innovative aspect of the Japanese film.” (Packet, 109)

In this powerful drama with comic undertones from Japan, a lazy summer by the beach develops a sinister undercurrent when two brothers’ pursuits of alcohol and gambling are interrupted by the arrival of a beautiful young woman they meet at the train station before arriving at their friend’s house and parents retreat. The younger brother quickly becomes infatuated with the girl, but the older brother also develops an attraction to her, and becomes determined to take her away. Even after learning she's already married.
Crazed Fruit was a most interesting film, in that it felt eerily similar to the any United States at the time period of the 1950’s. The black and white coloring of the movie did not take away from the many wide far shots of the youngsters taking pleasure riding on Frank’s many speed boats. Frank was also an enigma seeing and English speaker that I would only image to be an American, a rich American at that, in a Japanese classical film is bizarre. This would have to do to the fact in the readings of American ideals and culture over following and dominating Japanese culture at the time. Since the timing of the movies production takes place after the United States war victory and occupation this makes sense.
The rise of the Sun tribe was very interested since it summed up the collective feelings of older to younger generation Japanese. The older generation has failed the nation and left shame on the door steps of the younger generation. This lack of faith and guidance the younger generation felt the older generation, lead to the organizations such as the Sun Tribe. Most of this masculinity is portrayed with the actions taken with the group as a whole weather it is by roughing up some wrestling team punks, or of the [act of treating women as mere sex objects. This is most emphasized by the character Frank and how he treats his female house guest as replaceable.

The film Crazed Fruit depicts the interesting evolution of the Japanese people’s idea of masculinity. Throughout the film, the question of masculinity is prevalent in everything the boys do. Even the opening scenes establish that the grounds of manhood were built upon the premise of two elements: physicality and women.

The brothers poke fun at each other, calling each other scrawny and weak and Haruji is later seen lighting weights in his backyard, further establishing the importance of the physical body. Later, the boys end up fighting the wrestling team, asserting themselves as superior to them because they won the fight.

Throughout Crazed Fruit, the body’s key role in defining masculinity is clearly made through Nakahira’s use of close-ups and camera angles. Multiple close-ups of legs provides a sensual image that was not yet seen before this in Japanese film. By focusing on specific body parts, the audience can get a better understanding of the underlying dynamics of the film and what is being portrayed. Overhead shots on the beach with Haruji and Eri help to heighten the sexual tension felt between the two, providing the audience with a clear representation of the importance the body and physical attraction plays during the “Youth Revolution” and how masculinity is tied into this physicality.

Interestingly, although a man can be defined by the woman he is with, she is, herself treated as an object, subjugated to this restricted role. Eri is considered desirable to both the brothers and to be with her signifies something that they could not otherwise have achieved by themselves. Even earlier in the film, the boys decide to play poker with women instead of cards, resolving to each bring three women to the party and the most attractive and desirable “hand” wins. Women, in this instance, are demoted to a level equivalent to cards, yet they have the ability to make a man instantly more masculine by just being with him.

One cannot really call this change in the role of women a step towards femininity, but neither is it a step backwards. Although women are very drastically objectified and unfairly judged according to their level of desirability, they also have the power to define a man as more or less masculine.

Overall I thought this was a very interesting film and it showed some new things stylistically and thematically that makes it a good contrast with our previous films.

The reading states that modernist Japanese cinema was trying to differentiate itself from Jidaigeki and Shimpa, by using more realism. The movie 'Crazed Fruit' seems to personify this sentiment with its modern story, realistic filming technique and its adherence to an idea of the young taking over. There is a scene in the movie in which the younger brother confronts his brothers friends after they badmouth the old generation. He says that if this is the case then what are they going to do, are they really to make boredom their creed? This scene is filled with tension that is created by the constant closeups that switch quickly between speakers. This movie did a great job creating tension that never seems to get fully released until the final scene in which the younger bother kills Eri and his brother. This scene was amazing, as he circled the boat I couldn't help but think of him as a shark. Other quirky scenes that create tension are almost laughable when they reach their climax. My favorite was the scene in which the gang is checking out the new club the blue nile, as they enter they all circle around a couple that is dancing before finally sitting down with some ladies and acting in unison as they do so. 'Crazed Fruit' created some extremely interesting circumstances in which the characters could express themselves and their new generation mentality. As well scene of vulgarity, like the one in which the older brother tells his younger brother that the reason the women slept in is because they all wore her out the night before, are contrasted with scenes of innocence, like the younger brother and Eri lying together, sunning, on a rock. I however hate modernist Japanese cinema and spent most of this movie waiting for the inevitable act of extreme violence that seems to have no provocation and or no background pretense that makes it make sense. Honestly the younger brother had no indications or evidence that such an act was possible with his character. These scenes of violence always seem forced onto characters that would have no predispositions to do such a thing and as such they seem contrived. I will give it to the movie, I thought the older brother was going to be the one to perpetrate the heinous act. Anyways, this movie was well made and commented on the role of the new generation in modern Japan, but that doesn't mean it is interesting.

I felt there was a strong sense of masculinity present at the beginning of the film but trailed off as the romance began to take over the film. At first, the men in Crazed Fruit were set on finding women, checking women out, and having a cute girl on your shoulder. They were objectified as sort of ‘accessories’ and like playing cards. You could have one if it was a King or Ace but otherwise you might need 3 more in your hand.
Haruji begins to fall in love for the first time with Eri, who does not let him see who she really is. Haruji is under the impression she’s a sweet kid, and not only is she presented in equally fitting ‘white’ dresses and swim suits, but she knowingly lets him believe she’s single, younger, and inexperienced. When Natsuhisa, his brother, begins to want her too, Natsu’s love feels more lustful while Haruji is the ‘dedicated hero.’ Natsu sneaks around with Eri and even sleeps with her before Haruji. At this point the story follows the love story more exclusively. However, Nastu seemed to try and court Eri with less emotion and more ‘maniless’ I felt. While Haruji was innocent, only kissing her on the beach because he hadn’t done anything else, Natsu moved far faster right to sex. Haruji is also caught exercising with Eri’s swim cap on, but quickly removes it. His attachment to the item is sweet and sincere until he can return it. In one of the last scenes it was more obvious Natsu was forceful with his desire for Eri, almost kidnapping her in the boat before his brother arrives. Haruji races to see the truth, coming for his girlfriend but perhaps Eri’s reaction wasn’t what he had hoped. Instead, he snaps, circling the boat and finally ending their relationship by killing her and destroying the boat his brother is on. Haruji says nothing, his face stays blank, which I think symbolizes the loss of his innocence and allows him to express strength over his brother.

Crazed Fruit focused on the masculinity, sexuality and objectification, and it reminded me very much of an American film in comparison to the other films we have seen so far.
The masculinity aspect is very overt in the characters physical activities, i.e. weightlifting, water skiing, and cruising for women, and it sends a not so subtle message to the viewer that that is how a man should act. Many of the characters partake in most of these activities thus embedding the message further.
The characters also engage in copious amounts of sexual activity and there are many scenes that show characters in post-coital states. This movie also shows a lot of skin, and I can imagine that at the time of its release it caused a lot of waves. Also, not only are the men very sexual, but the young women are too. There's a scene when two older ladies are talking about how one girl has no shame in having sex with many men. This is also a commentary on the decay of society and too much foreign influence.
The characters of both sexes also are very objective of the other sex. The older brother is very objective and doesn't care about his girls. Frank is probably the most objectifying of the bunch because he expresses no emotion when he breaks up with the girl who slaps the hell out of him. Eri, surprisingly, is on both ends of the issue; she is objectifying and the object. The men all want her because she is gorgeous and promiscuous. And she objectifies by sleeping around while she's married and not caring at all about it.
This film, to me, has been the most reminiscent of an American film and I will predict that the films from now on will have a lot more foreign influence.

In the article “Youth, Body, and Subjectivity in the Japanese Cinema” by Michael John Raine, there is an idea continually put forth that famed Taiyozoku author Shintaro Ishihara’s work wasn’t literature and it was devoid of any meaning, essentially being a vehicle for shock value. In critiquing Ishihara’s work, rival studio director Yasuzo Masumura suggests that Ishihara “lacks the education to produce a thematically dense original work of fiction”. According to Raines, it is the “violent emptiness” that in some ways defines the Taiyozoku genre and I agree that it is essential to this style and Crazed Fruit in particular.
In Ko Nakahira’s film rendition of Ishihara’s story, the character’s restlessness is amplified by the plot’s lack of purpose. Essentially, a handful of privileged kids have been handed every thing they could think to ask for and even chasing girls has become too easy. They resort to absurdities such as objectifying women and running amuck in public for cheap thrills. The visual manifestations of their antics are of a substance yet to be portrayed in Japanese film. This is a maked departure from what is commonly referred to as pre-modern or traditional form in Japanese cinema.
The postwar generation of filmmakers sought to separate themselves from the styles of classic directors like Ozu and Kurosawa because they were of the opinion that such styles didn’t accurately encapsulate the postwar generation. The young Japanese in Taiyozoku films embody the attitude the youth had towards the generation that had lost the war and as such, the Taiyozoku films were violent and explicit.

Crazed Fruit, directed by Nakahira Ko’s must have shocked the viewers at the time because of the way in which it magnified the new generations’ lifestyle than had ever being portrayed years before. The film emphasizes the “new rich” of the post-modern society and the ways in which the youth of the day spent their time. There were a lot of Western elements in response to the heavily-influenced clothing and attitude of the younger generation as apposed to their parents. At many parts of the first half of the film, the attitude adults had towards the behavior of these young adults were repeatedly referenced as harmful to the overall welfare of the “innocent” kids. Haruji’s mother even tells him to stay away from his brother’s friends as they are bad influences on him.

Masculinity is another one of the more prominent themes throughout the film with examples ranging from the frequent wardrobe of swim trucks, Hawaiian and Western suits. Sports, specifically water sports were an outlet for the male characters to establish their masculinity in addition to their skill. Women were also another element to the films overall story in that they were portrayed as a form of superiority and dominance amongst the other guys.

In comparison to the previous films we have analyzed, this is by far the first film that challenged the society it was about. It reflected change that was far beyond the norm and comfort zone of their parents and older adults. It further distanced the younger generations from previous ones in that they weren’t being affected by war but were rather exploring a form of freedom never imagined by the parents.

With regards to the film techniques incorporated, Crazed Fruit, more than any other film provided a lot of aesthetically pleasing scenes where the characters were shown participating in their activities as well as simple tasks such as driving around town in their foreign cars. The Western influence with their way of dress was not odd but rather interesting to see its effect on the postwar culture and as an American it was added to the familiarity and a sense of commonality.

I will be writing this response to the film Crazed Fruit and how it shows many of the same characteristics of the very popular troubled youth films being made in Hollywood at this time period. These were the themes of the troubled youth characters that were acting purely out of boredom and the constant use of topics that reinforced the ideas of masculinity and what it means to be a man.
Crazed Fruit is about a small group of twenty-year old guys who constantly rebel against their parents and any other authoritative figure due to their overwhelming sense of boredom. This rebel mentality was not based out of poverty like many other previous rebellious activities. Many if not all of these young men have been brought up in very wealthy and prominent families. This boredom has been caused by their need for some kind of worthwhile significance to their own existence. In one scene the guys are all sitting around talking about how their generation is the generation of boredom and restlessness. The guys reject all of their school learning and philosophy in response to that they are just pretty words that have no real concrete hold in our lives. An analogy used in the film to explain was of the tropical fish in the tank, and now when the water is clear and clean, there are no problems but with the slightest introduction of something to disturb this such as the ink, the perfect life of the fish will end. Many of these themes used in this film mirrored the motifs and themes that were dominate in the 50s Hollywood rebel movies.
Another thing that I noticed while watching this film was the constant reaffirming of the main character’s masculinity. The guys in the group are always trying to measure each other up and trying to see which one of them is more of a man. The guys are always trying to find out ways to win over the girls and through whoever gets more girls they are in fact considered to be more masculine and manly. This idea of manliness could be symbolizing the loss to the Allied Forces in the Second World War. Many of the younger generations saw that the older generation of men had lost the war and in essence lost what makes them men. This lack of respect for their elders could also been a reason for the youth culture to want to rebel and act out against what in their eyes was a failed generation.

Though the movie ended on a very sad and destructive note, I believe that if we look back at the beginning we will actually see that the main character Haruji ends up acting according to his statements at the end. When the brothers first arrive at Frank’s house there is a debate about why the elite young people act the way they do, and they admit that it arises completely out of boredom. Haruji doesn’t like this excuse and tells them that they should do something. Ultimately, I think Haruji revolts against his brother’s ideals and the ideals of this kind of population by doing something decisive.

Though it involves killing his brother and his girlfriend and zooming off into the distance where we are not quite sure where he is going, I think it counts for him satisfying this goal he set for himself at the beginning, to not be like his brother and his crowd. Some would say that Haruji committing that atrocity is the build-up of the ideals he’s learned from hanging out with Natsuhisa and his crowd throughout the film. But Haruji acts contrary to these ideals throughout the movie. He had originally loved Eri, and I don’t think it was superficial. At least not as superficial as some of the other relationships we see in the film. His brother’s group treats women as objects, and just because Eri allows herself to be treated this way by other men, that doesn’t mean Haruiji saw her as a possession. He realized that she had just as much to do with cheating on him as Natsuhisa, and that is why he kills her too as well as his brother. An object would not be held responsible for someone taking it away, but Eri was certainly made to account for her own actions.

And the decision to kill the two at the end I don’t think could have been made by his brother’s crowd. They might be all for getting into fights and pushing their women around, but I think in general they are apathetic and would not have killed for passion. Also, the action of actually taking a step to do something radical in his life sets Haruji apart from them as well.

Crazed Fruit

This movie had a lot of agendas and hidden messages to push. There is a sense that the older generation is out of touch and useless. This is especially evident during a conversation towards the beginning of the movie with a series of close up facial shots when they’re discussing how the adults know nothing, and a “leading thinker’s” line that the boys are the future captains of industry sounds like something out of a silent film, rather than inspiring them.
The setting of the film seems to be during a vacation. Setting the tone for luxury and leisure, things the audience probably lacked in post-WWII Japan, making this a film of ideals rather than reality. The film not only promotes wealth, but the behavior of the boys. The boys in the film have the physiques of ninth graders, but travel in packs, looking for beautiful girls among all the “fish bait.” They are constantly posturing, disrespecting their parents and elders, and objectifying women, although all these actions are glorified. Haruji is the kindest boy in the film, but is being influenced by his brother and his friends. The brother, though seeming to look out for his brother when he confronts Eri(?) about her marriage, then proposes a fling with her and kisses her.
The women in this film are strongly objectified, seen as trophies for the boys to win and collect. But they themselves are immoral as well. Eri, Haruji’s love interest, is already married when she starts to date him and has little excuse for being with him besides her getting married too soon. She also (presumably) sleeps with his brother, but seems to regret getting caught up in the flings when she draws on her mirror with makeup.
At a carnival, the boys get into a brawl with a rival college’s wrestling team, thrashing them and confirming their masculinity in the eyes of the audience. Judging by the implications of a shot of Frank with an armload of alcohol, they then proceed to get drunk. They also seem very ambivalent about those around them, evidenced by the killing of the fish by dumping coffee or tea in the tank.
There is one American boy, Frank, among the group of friends, and he seems to be one of the most ill-behaved, leading me to wonder if the film is suggesting the bad behavior was brought about by the American occupation. Frank is the most rebellious and “coolest” looking boy of the group.

Crazed Fruits was an interesting example of what Oshima had talked about: that the only change brought about by modernists like Nakahira is a change brought about in the form of Japanese Films. Certainly, the ending of the movie was an absolute, complete surprise. The shock value of the brutal murder of Natsuhira and Eri was unreal: there was no indication that Haruji would be capable of such a crime. The character’s movements were stilted at times, surprisingly feminine in order to convey his “innocence.” Indeed, this is the first movie we’ve seen where most of the characters act with their entire bodies instead of just their faces. The tics present in Natsuhira’s and Haruji’s characters help to draw in the viewer, making the conclusion all the more shocking. The only time we see Haruki angry is when his brother had flirted with Eri at the poker party a week after the plot starts, and even then Haruki simply takes Eri with him. At no point does the audience see or feel the tension and murderous rage building within Haruki, not even when he is searching for his brother and his lover. Yet the basic story structure of the movie follows other story structures of the times.
Raine makes particular mention of the helicopter shot that is used during the climax of the film. While he argues the helicopter shot is used “as if preparing us for the violence that follows,” it appears the shot would have been more suited to the anti-melodramatic irony that he argues taiyozoku films contributed, among other things, as part of a change in stylistic content in youth and action films over the next 10 to 20 years. The shot in question, of Haruji circling the yacht Natsuhira and Eri are on, lasts almost 45 seconds and is shot so far from the actors we can barely make them out on the screen. There is no score to the shot as well, the tension was built up in previous shots with close-ups of the characters’ reactions to the current predicament. This shot almost seems anti-climactic, in that it really doesn’t prepare the audience for murderous violence at all. The audience can tell there will be some sort of confrontation, as Haruji does not exactly look like a happy camper. But the use of the helicopter shot almost diffuses the scene of the tensional build-up completely, making the scene almost “unbearable to watch,” as Raine put it.

Like most films, Nakahira’s “Crazed Fruit” follows a changing society. During the time the film was produced (1956), Japan was in the midst of postwar societal and structural change. Oshima gives a brief history in “Is it a Breakthrough?” He describes the government as promoting democracy and defending the pre-modern tendencies of Japanese society. Politically, there was an establishment power balance between conservatives and revolutionaries. In terms of films, melodramas were flopping and the number of viewers was declining. The enemy of the film world, television, is also becoming more prominent. All this change in culture and society must inevitably reflect on the film world.

As Standish describes, themes of sex and crimes begin to take over themes of love and romance in the late 1950’s and into the 1960’s: “the love between a man and a woman is reified as the antithesis to war, destruction, and death.” (222). This period is when the modernists of film start to appear. In terms of the culturally daring “Crazed Fruit,” love is thrown out and an ideology based on masculinity swiftly replaces it.

The theme of masculinity is very apparent throughout the film, visually and ideologically. Shots of water-skiing and lifting weights show the male group’s way of displaying masculinity. Haruji, the younger brother, is constantly struggling to get approval from his older brother, Natsuhisa, and the male group. For example, Haruji shows his muscles to Natsuhisa on the train as proof that he is a strong man.

Oshima discusses Nakahira’s film method of the “three S’s – speed, thrills, and sex.” (33). In terms of speed, the film has a very fast-pace style. There are quick scenes and cuts, and the film goes for only an hour and a half. We see lots of thrills that were dazzling to the Japanese and world audience of the time. As Oshima puts it, “In the rip of a woman’s skirt and the buzz of a motorboat, sensitive people heard the heralding of a new generation of Japanese film.” (26). Sex is, of course, a very large part of the film. The relationships among the characters creates a high tension that Nakahira utilizes with every shot of desire.

i have been using it for 2 weeks now and i have seen a difference. my stretch marks are alot lighter. but they are still raised. i have very bad stretch marks and they are very deep. but i decited to try this product becasue someone that i know said that it completely removed their stretch marks. but thiers wasnt as bad as mine.. so we will see how it goes. im hoping to see a difference. but i also exfoliate my stretch marks and that has also made a differance for me. so you might give that a try too!!

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune.
