The film Kamikaze Taxi centers on what it means to be different in a society that values past tradition. The two conflicting viewpoints are held by Senator Domon, a traditionalist, and the younger generation consisting of Kantake, Tama and, at times, Tatsuo. Domon believes that women should stay in the kitchen and that Japan should value what it meant to be a traditional Japanese citizen. Namely, Domon wished for a homogenous Japan build upon the traditional patriarchal system. The conflicting viewpoint of this is that of the non-traditional Japanese people. These are the people who were not born and raised in Japan, but have emigrated back to Japan. People like Kantake have an outsider’s perspective of Japan and its culture and can see how harmful Domon’s traditionalist mentality is. Even Tatsuo, who was “raised by women,” is disgusted by Domon’s views and, after the death of his girlfriend, vows revenge upon Domon and his traditionalist ideals. It seems, however, that it is only through the most extreme example of Domon does this prevalent conservative outlook become known. The self-realization seminar showed that, although these characters are aware of the prejudices in Japanese culture, they still perpetuate them through their exclusion and treatment of Tama and Kantake. Kantake is literally barred from the seminar by a barrier of pillows which the seminar leader places around him at the start. Kantake also does not speak throughout the entire seminar, even though the leader tells the group of the importance of listening to the ideas of everyone involved. Tama is also considered to be an outcast of the group. She is caught up in her own little “shell” and does not participate with everyone else and, as a result, she is subject to ridicule. This is similar to how the Japanese viewed non-native Japanese. Non-native Japanese have their own experiences away from the centralized group and this difference makes them subject to criticism. Even though the seminar taught the people involved to value their individuality, it was this individualism that created problems for both Tama and Kantake. It is this underlying traditionalism that creates the basis by which the Japanese judge a person individually.
In Kamikaze Taxi, masculinity is consistently paired with morality in defining the “good” and the “bad” characters. Tatsuo is young and attractive. A graphic sex scene and several comments on his penis size characterize Tatsuo’s prolific sex drive. However, his sexuality does not override his family morals: Tatsuo realizes that he should be taking care of women rather than exploiting them. He wants to settle down with his girlfriend, but she is murdered by the yakuza. In a further display of his morals, the first thing Tatsuo does after robbing Domon is to buy his mother a new gravestone. At the end of the film, Kantake’s morals are also confirmed: he kills Domon for the sake of his father and Animaru for the sake of his friend. Domon, on the other hand, is contrasted with Tatsuo’s masculinity. He is a sexual pervert, beating prostitutes for pleasure. His masculinity in relation to a man’s role in the family is undermined when, even though he has bodyguards, his house is broken into twice. In addition to sex, violence is also used as an indicator of masculinity. During several fight scenes, Tatsuo manages to get an upper hand over a group of yakuza, further proving his masculinity. Kantake’s character also proves himself using violence: he overwhelms the yakuza and their guns using purely physical weapons such as a baseball bat. However, Tatsuo and Kantake’s use of violence differs from that of the yakuza. Tatsuo and Kantake fight even when their odds of winning are small, whereas the yakuza outnumber their victims, bullying them and using torture. Animaru and Domon rely on others to fight for and protect them. In one scene, Kantake helps Tatsuo escape being tortured by some yakuza. They tie up the yakuza but do not resort to torture to find Animaru’s whereabouts. Tatsuo instead lays side-by-side with the man and chats with him: the man immediately betrays his boss. The yakuza’s masculinity is called into question: he is wearing feminine underwear and only has one testicle. His morality is also challenged: he murdered Tatsuo’s friend and betrays his boss. Tatsuo and Kantake are portrayed as masculine and morally upright whereas the yakuza and Domon are cowardly and corrupt.
I think the biggest thing that I noticed about Kamikaze Taxi was the choice to go back and forth between documentary and action when handling some very serious political issues. Political corruption, yakusa, prostitution, racial prejudice against Japanese who grew up abroad are all very involved issues, and the film took them head on. The film could have easily been done as a straight action flick, but then the realism, and the statement about that realism would then have been lessened. It seemed to be a very active choice to blend the general entertainment value of the film with the harsh reality of a politically turbulent (as mentioned) time in Japan's history.
I'll also bring out the relation to my last paper, in which I discussed woman's rights in Japan. Saying that women belong in the kitchen, while quite possibly a very real opinion at the time, would still have been quite politically dangerous to say.
Senator Domon, as a character, was corrupt as they come though, and created and overwhelming sense of “I'm the evil one”. A little over the top, but it was effective non-the-less at making a political point about the time. I find it interesting that I didn't notice any really redeeming qualities to the presentation of the yakusa. I seem to have come to expect every group, judged good or bad by the population, to have some trait that I consider worth of respect.
Week 10
In watching the movie Kamikaze Taxi, I was forced to see the many sides of discrimination within Japanese society. Being African American myself, I could only think of similar issues within our own society (not to mention that the article for Popular Music and Media in Modern Japan, that we had to read to Thursday).
In watching the movie, I wonder if the beginning is supposed to be a metaphor for a person with no sense of direction (referring to the main character Tatsuo, as being nothing more than a day pimp). Then after he witnesses something that he doesn’t like, Tatsuo begins to transform from a droid to a person (full of emotion) with a cause/ mission. Also the number of references in the movie relating to kamikaze (meaning Divine Wind) brings up an important question within Japanese society relating to “changing, but changing for the better”. Similar to what Masato Harada tried to bring to the main screen. The article we had to read for the Tuesday (11/10/09) mentions that this film was made out of genuine anger (apparently about his son being bullied or his English-Japanese accent). How can you made such a transformational movie out of pure irritation?
I also noted that the paper mentioned Harada’s infatuation with Hollywood. “The director is not trying to compete with Hollywood. He is trying to seduce it” (Course reader, 200). Why is Harada trying so hard to influence Hollywood with such issues as Japaneseness? Hollywood can confront people with such issues, but more than likely it will either further instill those stereotypes, or just deepen certain stereotypes.
Whatever the case, I thought the movie was good, but my favorite is still Rashomon.
Kamikaze Taxi is presenting the idea that skewed ideas of masculinity can ruin a society. The film opens with a documentary style explanation of the societal run down. There are 150,000 foreign labors of Japanese descent working in Japan, and there are 90,000 yakuza members. The foreign laborers are essentially third classes citizens, while the members of the Yakuza can reign like kings, if they are at the top.
The break down makes it clear, that it is important to be “ a man” and the top men are the ones in power such as the politicians and the yakuza. Within these two orders, which are presented much the same. It is shown that a real man has no feelings and thinks of women as objects and only cares for himself. This is shown through the graphic language used. The men frequently talk about sex. There a number of references to size of “dick” relating to courage or power. The scene rounds off this ideal nicely, where Tama is severely beaten, and Tatsuo’s girlfriend is murdered. There is little emotion shown in the yakuza members, if anything it is annoyance that they have to deal with the women.
This unhealthy view of masculinity is something that Tatsuo believes in the beginning, but starts to fade quickly. He has a soliloquy about women taking care of him, and how she should take care of his girlfriend. He admits that this is desire, but can not achieve it because his leaders treat women as if they are only sex objects, so if he is to succeed in their world, he must do the same. This is tested as he watches his beloved girlfriend murdered by his boss but does nothing. This is the breaking point.
From here on in Tatsuo breaks away from the yakuza idea of what a man should be. He robs them and then is on the run. He teams up with the taxi driver as he prepares for his final move, the “kamikaze”. Outside of the world of power he creates his first health relationship with another male. Although the taxi driver is a foreign worker, he and Tatsuo bond. This relationship is created to show how the human can thrive outside of the skewed world of gender roles.
(It is refreshing to see the gangster held in a different light then the American cinema, where they are larger then life heroes, tragic heroes, but put on pedestals nonetheless. Also it was nice to see a male commenting on the flaws of masculinity in society, often times this point of view is presented through a woman, and I think it was more effective through the male perspective.)
The movie for this week was definitely a strange amalgamation of movie genre. The switch between documentary, yakuza, road film and 'buddy action flick' styles in the span of one movie was pretty disorientating as a viewer. In the readings it was pointed out that Kamakazi Taxi was a series of videos that combined was over 3 hours long. The movie was a condensed edit of this and was compiled for foreign audiences. This made a lot of sense when I read it and helped clear up a lot of complaints that I had with the films pacing and plot development. The movie has a strange side to it that never quite gets explained or commented on. Scenes like the 'self realization seminar' and the such, while interesting, seemed to be from a different movie. From the intense sexuality and violence in begging a softer tale begins to emerge that deals with issues of race and culture. However at the end of the movie we movie back into a world of extreme violence as the protagonist from Peru seals the deal Tetsuo started. This would work if I were watching it as a series of television programs in which this division from action to boring and back again would be justified across 2 or 3 episodes. For the most part I found this film to be engrossing, fun and hip but at the same time awkward. I could never quite get over Tetsuo's inability to speak up as his so called girlfriend is killed or his later decision to take in out on the senator. The plot in this respect seems to break down multiple times, but since we don't seem to much care why our characters are motivated, just that they are, such breaks are excuseble. At the end Cold Bamboos badass take down of the senator and the yakuza boss will stand in my mind as one of if not the coolest badass scenes ever. In sharp contrast the the shoddy attempts made by Tetsuo at violence, Cold Bamboo takes it to a whole new level, easily and calmly killing those he intends to get even with. Another point of interest to me in this film was the use of comedy. I found this movie to be extremely amusing. The constant quips for the characters aside the physical and situational comedy in this movie was subtle enough to not dominate the movie but good enough to off put the audience as the the true intentions of a scene. My favorite scene being when Tetsuo bursts into the Anima Realty office and goes tearing through shooting his guns, all the while a man on the couch calmly tends to his wounded leg, not once looking up. All in all this movie did a lot, some of which it did well and some of which it did not.. But love it or hate it there are scenes in this movie for everyone.
I think, while a skewed view of masculinity plays a role, there is certainly more than that at work. I think that the attitude presented by the men towards women should be considered also on the societal level. It is not just a view of masculinity, but also based on the culture that they are surrounded with. It seems that, from the footage of the debate between Domon (I think it was Domon) and the female commentator that ideas of gender equality were just beginning to come to Japan. Although, I believe that in earlier Japanese society, the Heian period at least, women did hold a higher place in society. I think there is also something about using people as material objects for personal gain in this movie. This applies to both men and women. Definitely it applies more about women, but there is also the use of Tatsuo by Domon to get women. More than that though, there is the use of lower ranking men by those in power to do dirty work for them. There is also the scene where Tatsuo’s friend, after they escape from Domon’s men, is talking about being a soccer goalie. One can only imagine what brought him from being a soccer player to a criminal. I recently read an article about playing football and head injuries. This article made the comparison between dog fighting and football. It happened to mention that after they left professional football many players in retirement slip into dementia and are forgotten by society. I think that if we remember what the inspiration for this movie was, that being the treatment of foreign-born Japanese in Japan, then we can look at this from another perspective. I think that these categories we use for telling how much respect we give to someone based on where they were born or their citizenship status provides an excuse for treating that person a certain way. If we use the term “prostitute” for someone that means you can treat that person as a sex object because somehow what they do is what they are. I suppose that’s a bit philosophical, but I think it has many implications for the way that we still treat people now.
Kamikaze Taxi was a a heck of a ride. The beginning scenes were documentary like in which footage of interviews were shown of the people living in the Japanese foreigner quarters. They immediately brought out the main issue that the film was going to address throughout its length. The discrimination against foreigners of Japanese descent. I was confused at first, as in class the character Kantake was mentioned but he did not make an appearance until a good way into the movie.My first reaction was that I got the wrong movie, I thought it was going to be about a taxi driver and a political film, but with the first scenes, there was a guy peeing, Tatsuo, and another guy Ishida looking at his penis. Then it switched to dirty politicians looking for a fix with hookers and then a sex scene with Tatsuo and his girlfriend. It was as if these scenes were not from the same movie at all; they didn't flow into each other and made me rather confused about what was actually going on until after Tatsuo and Kantake had met did it make any sense. I noticed a few things about the camera angle in this film, first off there were a few scenes that played absolutely no part in the plot, like during Tatsuo's sex scene it cuts to Domon leading some guy through his yard; what the hell was that? is what I thought to myself. Then there are a few scenes where the camera is way up high and gets a wide shot of the whole scene. This kind of gives a distanced feeling to the scene and what is going on, much like an outsider eavesdropping on one of their conversations. It also happens when Kantake kills Animaru and tells him his life story, the camera pulls away distancing us from the characters. The film was up and down, but I got to say I don't get what is so good about feeling each others' dick. I know it is a masculine symbol that is used rather a lot in gang, yakuza, mafia, and crime related films and stuff, but what is up with the feeling of dicks? Not to sound offensive, but I don't find any reason to touch another man's penis, let alone grope and cause it to become erect as in the scene where Tatsuo goes play pachinko and gets captured after the self activity. Another thing is in the way beginning, when Tatsuo's girlfriend is introducing the senator's new plaything, Tama. There is this girl in the background who is renting videos; both Tatsuo and his girlfriend get it on on the floor and she keeps inching closer and closer until she is right behind them. It's just weird, the whole movie was a roller coaster ride, but I did like it, Kantake is probably the coolest taxi driver ever, Queen Latifah comes second but only because her taxi can transform.
Kamikaze Taxi playing upon the notorious Tokkotai suicide bombers from WW2 and representing the frivolity of the Japanese customization of human sacrifice while at the same time directly confronts corruption and right-wing, anti-foreigner, nationalists within government, as well as in Japanese society in general. The film was complicated and extremely long and somewhat seeming like two or three films in one. Yet, the film still carries certain continuity, though, reaching hard for it at times. The characters are very atypical compared to other films that carry similar plot themes, gives the impression that it is somehow fresh.
The violence, for one, seemed out of place relative to the coolness of the characters. The Yakuza kid who knows the fate about to catch up with him after crossing his mob-boss seems unaffected, or just oblivious to the chaos and death all around him. The ex-prostitute, whose upbringing has prepared her for her obliviousness in the face of shootouts and murder, seems more distant to the violence and carries a performance that makes her seem colder than a hardened veteran. The depth and coolness in the Japanese Peruvian taxi driver complete with an Andean flute, gracefully fulfilling the role of the Ronin in the film. In actuality, all three are ronin, all abandoned by their former employers and protectorates. The bluntness of the objectifying of women and how it is condemned in the film, starting with the murder of the prostitute/girlfriend of the young yakuza, places emphasis on what the director wants the viewer to see, which is, that these guys are real, they are in cahoots with the government who then are unleashed on the people, maintaining their position of oppression. The TV scenes of the senator appearing on televised forum, interestingly characterizes anti-foreigner and anti-feminist sentiments that are so blatant in the view yet portrayed in a manner that makes the comments seem like normal political jargon. The placement of these attacks on the right wingers of Japan positions itself against the WW2 generation and its symbolization of oppression, not only on Japanese but also non-Japanese. Confronting the Kamikaze and describing the comparison to the act as one of bravery and self-sacrifice for a greater cause versus the drug-induced actions of a scared kid driving himself to his death. It is important to note that blame was NOT laid on the backs of the pilots themselves, but rather on the back of the commanders who sent them on their “mission.” Those who turned back were said to be disgraced, yet the film also implies that disgrace is a matter of opinion: the father of Kantake, the taxi driver, is revealed to have served as a kamikaze pilot but refused to take the drugs issued to him and possibly enabling him to not follow through with the attack and instead dropped his bombs in the ocean and turned his plane around and flew home. It was an uncommon film, tied together with familiar story lines, but portrayed in a different, modern and liberal Japanese light.
Kamikaze taxi is an interesting piece of movie making because it incorporates many different styles and genres throughout. Like we discussed in class, the film switches between documentary and traditional film styles first starting with regular people (i'm not sure if they are normal people or actors) and then the characters of the film in documentary style. It was very informative to learn about how the Japanese view others that had no choice in where they were born or where they moved to when they were young, and how they discriminate so viciously throughout society. The reading provided much more insight about the director's son being highly bullied and scrutinized due to his living in the United States. The film also focuses on woman's rights for a bit in the beginning and it's appalling to listen to the Senator talk, explicitly, about keeping women in the kitchen. As a side note, the history on the comfort women of WWII is incredible and just plain evil. Unfortunately, there is some violence against women, but not throughout the film, thankfully.
Kamikaze Taxi reminds me that even though we've made a lot of progress in society, we still have a long way to go. Watching this film shows how Japan was (at least in 1995) and I reflect on how we are here in America and I'm certain that we all need improvement.
Kamikaze taxi was a rather unusual film, that seemed to follow a certain pattern. Things happened in the manner of morbid, disgusting, happy, sad, and these attributes would repeat themselves over and over again. The music in the movie was amazing, especially the theme that was played with the flute when showing a seen with the Peruvian, Japanese man Kantake. This movie seemed to be quite broken, in the sense that you are not sure exactly who the main character is, and characters that you thought were not important seemed to show back up constantly. There was a thirty minute slot where nothing happens but fun between the main characters. Granted it is a happy build up to the uber sad story that Kantake is going to tell. Kantake almost seems to be the semi cool emo kid, except he is 30 years old. Why does Kantake stay with Tatsuo that whole time, he has no reason to keep staying with him, he constantly says that he is not interested in the money that Tatsuo has. Then again not having any reason at all to do something can sometimes be a legitimate reason for doing things. The end was the absolute most important part of the movie. When he, the timid emo kid, rips apart the mental well being of Domon, totally destroying his ideals of him being a kamikaze pilot. I think that it was meant to be interpreted that Domon has a heart attack while trying to kill Kantake, when the Kamikaze, or the enormous gust, blows him against the wall. Is his justification of this killing of Domon and Animaru an act of revenge, the will of his father, both, or was he planning this the entire time and was using Tatsuo as a tool or a means of justifying his actions? Whatever the reason the fact that Domon needed to die was apparent. I was just waiting to see is it was going to be Kantake or if it was going to be Tatsuo. This idea of the quite, yet emotionally destroyed individual, which goes on a killing spree as an act of revenge, seems to be a kind of overplayed trope that crops up in films. It is masked by the fact that there is a lot of things that happen to the characters that have nothing to do with the progression of the story.

The movie opens up with what looks like a documentary style moment, it tricks the viewer into thinking it is some sort of documentary. But then as the films goes on it becomes obvious that the events that are taking place in the film have not really happened. Then it becomes clear that this is a proper movie instead of a documentary. The film progresses on to show the actions of the yakuza tatsuo, who seeking revenge falls from his position and is forced to run from the yakuza. Similar to other movies the reasons that tatsuo was seeking revenge was becomes a woman that wanted to settle down with him was killed by the yakuza. Woman seems to be the reasons for a lot of yakuza turning against the gang, because we have seen it in other movies.
In the movie we also see the corruption of a right wing politician. The movie shows the right-winger in the worst light possible, which he quite deserves. Beaches the right-winger is probably the most horrible character in the entire movie. This is the film makers attack on the right wingers.
The interviews are done in the style of a documentary, and look as if they are done after the movie. Even through when watching the movie is seems hard to believe because the characters that give the interviews may die before the movie is ended. Therefore it would be hard for them to give interviews after the movie, and illogical for those who have sat down during the action to give an interview. So the interviews don’t really fit with the progression of the movie, and in a small way work against the continuous plot of events.
Yet the interviews also deepen the understanding that the viewer has of the characters and their place in the movie. In one of the interviews in the beginning of the movie we see an interview with tatsuo, and in that interview it is revealed that he was considering settling down with the prostitute that had asked him to before. Without this crucial interview it would have been impossible for the view to divine his feelings. So in a real way the interviews depthen out understanding of the characters and strengthen the movie in fundamental ways.
Kamikaze Taxi seemed to be made of contradictions. First off, it is a documentary, but it most definitely isn’t. The interviews with the random characters just felt so right even as they paused the flow for a moment. The strange shot angles (like the balcony shot down on Tatsuo and Tama in his house) seemed like some camera guy was just hanging out in the house, but then other shots were set up far too perfectly (I believe it was during the discussion with the new-age death cult guy and the candles in the lanterns acted as glorious set pieces). It even had a moment of documentary within documentary (similar some what to the movie within a movie of I was born but...) when the boys are filling each other while hanging out at the festival. There the shaky camera of true documentary was seen, but it didn’t break the illusion created by the main camera…that is, didn’t make the rest of the movie seem any less real. That is how they fool around in front of the camera and this is how they act when the camera goes away. Still crazy, but make a lot less peace symbols.
At first, I was a little horrified by the scene in the rural weapons house when the boys are caught by the yakuza, but then stepped in the other great contradiction to gloss over the bloodshed; the music. It was so very strange to be watching people shooting each other like mad, but all the while listening to lilting flute music and thinking tra-de-la-de-daa! We’re running for our lives, but isn’t it just GREAT?!!! Which, I suppose, is the whole idea behind Tatsuo’s actions. The mob doesn’t go check out the onsen, because they think Tatsuo should be scared and holed up somewhere desperate to survive. Not doing the chu-chu line with a bunch of women, a taxi driver, and Charlie Chaplin.
Though, I have to say if there was a message in the movie what I got was ‘we could actually be friends.’ It was just perfect when the yakuza boss (Animaru) said that to the other man in the van about Kantake. Throughout the movie, there are these moments where enemies don’t really look like enemies anymore. Tatsuo and the gangster lie laughing on the ground, sharing some inner secrets about Animaru…and then Tatsuo shoots him because he shot Tatsuo’s friend. Chidori comments that he really enjoys the smooth sax of the record he finally bought and then we learn Animaru is a sax player. Murderous bodyguard Chidori has a soft spot and Animaru, when not beating people with sticks, is a musician. And at the very end, Animaru with his wide smile and friendly “Heeeeeeeeeeey, I wanted to talk to you earlier!” and then Kantake shoots him. But Animaru still wants to talk and have someone around when he dies. If there wasn’t all the other crap in the world, this could be a large bunch of decently interesting people who could have gotten along amicably.
Matsato Harada’s Kamikaze Taxi is an interesting genre bending look at what it means to be Japanese. The film begins with a documentary style prolgue about the trials of Brazillian immigrants in Japan. Afterwards the films style switches back and forth between a Yakuza film, American road movie, and an art house picture. In doing so, Harada is able to create a post-modern style of filmmaking that utilizes the various genres as a metaphor for what it means to be truly Japanese. Spawning from the segregation and discrimination his son experienced during school Harada states, “I was so frustrated. I made Kamikaze Taxi based on that anger.” Harada presents the audience with the character of Kantake and as the reading states, “Harada builds numerous subtle references to the ‘divine wind,” Harada shows Kantake as the epitome of discrimination constantly oppressed because of his upbringing. In Kamikaze Taxi, not only does the narrative function as a critique on discrimination, specifically the relationship between Tatsuo and the driver, but also the way in which Harada constructs the story. By switching tones, and genre Harada creates a pastiche that questions what it means to be truly Japanese and what it means to make a Japanese film. He simultaneously questions whether a film can be Japanese and still have a heavily American influence, and if a person raised in South America is as Japanese as any other citizen. The film also treads the line between grisly violence and philosophical ruminations on life. Kamikaze Taxi, begins in the gritty Yakuza, and then 180 shift half way through the movie when the characters seek respite at a spy and then go through an uplifting self-realization seminar that causes them all to examine their lives. This illustrates Harada’s underlying theme of challenging the audience to look at their own lives and question how they not only view the world and their own lives but also the people around them.
“Kamikaze Taxi” raises some very important questions and makes some key points in the discussion of what defines “Japaneseness.” The director, Harada Masato, uses an interesting mix of film elements. The documentary style in the beginning of the movie shows the true, or realistic, side of the national argument. The audience receives a sense of validity because, although the storyline is fiction, the themes and messages are proven to have significance in the viewers’ lives. One central theme of “Kamikaze Taxi” is the ostracizing of Japanese blood-born citizens that were raised outside of Japan; the main example being the taxi driver, Kantake. Tatsuo essentially throws Kantake into the action of the film by taking his taxi as part of his flee plan. As Kantake and Tatsuo continue on their journey, we learn about the taxi driver’s past life. Born in Japan, but raised in Peru, Kantake came back to Japan and was forced to work as a low-class taxi driver. With shotty Japanese language skills, he is unable to find other work and is shunned by the society and culture of his own heritage. This frustration and anger leads Kantake to join forces with Tatsuo to combat Domon, “a man who symbolizes the society that has spit him out.” (Mes, 88). Mes describes Harada’s ability to question traditional values and the beliefs of what defines “Japaneseness.” Strong symbolism can be seen as derived from the director’s own experiences. As a former Hollywood film critic, Harada returned to Japan where his son was a victim of the lack of acceptance of foreign Japanese.
A second central theme is issues of masculinity. Power is a theme that can be traced back to the earliest of films, including Ozu’s 1932 film, “I was born, but…” However, it is a difficult feat to compare “Kamikaze Taxi” to the traditional values of Ozu’s themes of Japanese familial issues. But an interesting contrast between Western films (specifically, American) and Japanese films (and European) can be drawn from this theme of masculinity. American films are notorious throughout the world for the violence and brutality of both storylines and characters. Whereas, Japanese films, such as “Kamikaze Taxi,” involves nudity and sex that is not seen in common Hollywood films. Both film worlds use their polar opposites to demonstrate themes of masculinity – violent characters for Hollywood films and sexually dominant characters for Japanese films.

My first impression of this film was a that it would be another documentary… I was far from correct on this matter. Kamikaze Taxi was a terribly heart wrenching film that left many who, what , where, and whys of the action of the characters n the film. The film centers on Tatsuo a low-level, short-tempered gangster moving up in the pimping business. His new job was laded ,due to the fact the old person has been promoted. Yet, when he sends out his one and only hooker Tama found by his girlfriend to service a wizened politician, she returns beaten, battered, and bruised. A horrific term is used to describe what the elderly senator did to her, but the a doctor insists that she stays bed ridden for a week. When Tatsuo's girlfriend complains, she is killed by crime boss Animaru as Tatsuo is forced to look on. Seeking revenge, he and his posse trash the politician's house and swipe a stack of 2 million yen. In retaliation, Tatsuo's own bosses put a hit out on them. After a bloody shoot out in a forest, the protagonist is the only one to emerge alive. He hails a cab with the aim of making a suicide run at the gang's HQ, but the cabbie proves to be a Peruvian returnee, who speaks in a strange accent and can't read a Japanese map. Though at first the driver seems wide-eyed and innocent, he reveals an inner strength in chaotic situations. Soon the two seem less like a passenger and driver and more like two allies in the same beleaguered army.
The film plays on many parts of the racism, that engulfed Japan during the 1990’s. Let alone the interviews of individuals recounting terrible events against them, for just being Japanese but born else where. It is sickening and is reflected in the film, with language and other hints. Though the film is gruesome, it carries a heavy message to its viewers about equality, and making the right decisions at the correct time, rather then waiting and just dieing in the end.
Kamikaze Taxi was yet again, another unique Japanese approach to film. I thought it was very apparent that this style was different than other directors and Harada was very skilled when he made this film. The mix of documentary style in the beginning pulls the audience in from ‘reality’ to the ‘fiction’ of the yakuza/Japanese emigrant story. In a nutshell I feel it is a type of revenge story and a type of justice-seeking story due to the fact that Tatsu is out to get the Yakuza for killing his girlfriend while Kantake takes up his unfinished business in the name of Tatsu’s death and to justify his existence as a real Japanese when the Yakuza boss believes he is not worth a what a native-born Japanese is worth. Kantake’s past is slowly unraveled throughout the film and his emotions run deep in connection to his Peruvian homeland where he saw horrors brought on by guerilla warfare with women and children while no one came to help them. When he confronts the yakuza boss at the end of the film, the audience finds out his father was a kamikaze pilot as well but the boss insults him and calls him a coward. Kantake gives reasons why he could have done what he did, despite his poor Japanese skills. The scene escalates into a fight but I was confused why Kantake didn’t fight back until the window shattered and a large wind entered the room, throwing the boss off him. Kantake had spoken about this as real kamikaze wind from the Andes in Peru but I felt it pushed the envelope between the real and the fantastical too much. However, I overlooked it in favor for how the last scene with Animaru is shot. Kantake easily is able to shoot the sought after villain and as he lays dying, asks for Kantake to tell him why he was shot and to tell his story. Slowly Kantake fumbles with reciting it as the camera pulls out of the misty bamboo forest when I realized Kantake had told the boss his name was spelled ‘cold bamboo’. This tie to Kantake’s pastoral love for nature, along with his name as the final setting sealed the ending of the film perfectly, at least in my thoughts.
The film wasn't really what I was expecting. The reading mentions that Harada uses a mixture of genres but the documentary opening didn't prepare me for the slightly violent and sexually explicit topics in the film. It's separated by the different genres. The film feels as if it's cut into sections by film style rather than totally flowing together as one piece but I like the concept behind it's construction. I also thought the sound in the film was interesting. There's rarely music and it's only the flute music that comes on generally as diegetic music but then turns into non-diegetic.
Harada seems to try to raise social issues in his films. We talked about how "Kamikaze Taxi" focussed on a very specific kind of discrimination based more on culture and language. But there was a lot of sexism and questions of gender throughout the story. The film centers on male relationships like most previous films we've watched. The bad guy, Domon is demonstrated to be bad by his treatment of women. He openly said that women should be in the kitchen and those who aren't are the ones creating problems for everyone else.
I thought it was interesting that Tatsuo says in a documentary-like interview scene that because he thinks of women as meaningful people, he can't truly be a part of the yakuza. Yet later, when his girlfriend is freaking out about how badly her friend was beaten, he apologizes to one of his superiors and does nothing to stop her murder. Tatsuo talks about how he values women in more private conversations but doesn't completely act upon this in the world of men. I can understand that he wouldn't want to further upset his boss, but he just stood there and watched Renko die. He can't try to prevent her harm but he can put together a heist? Plus, while she was still alive Renko, seemed used by Tatsuo for sex and being whored out. Maybe he doesn't exploit women and use them as objects the way the yakuza did, but women clearly have one major purpose for him.
I really enjoyed seeing this film by Masto Harada and his very unique filming styles. Kamikaze Taxi is about a young yakuza member named Tatsuo who through his connections with prostitution ends up robbing a corrupt politician for torturing and killing one of his girls. The mob catches Tatsuo and his gang and soon Tatsuo is the only one left alive running for his life with millions of tainted cash and vows to go on a kamikaze mission to seek revenge upon Animaru and Domon. Along the way Tatsuo comes across a Peruvian taxi cab driver that recently arrived back in Japan after living the majority of his life back in South America and he is struggling to cope with poverty and the prejudices of native-born Japanese.
Because of Masto Harada’s work history abroad it allowed for him to gain the perspective of an outsider to the Japanese culture and to let him be less bound by the ruling mores in voicing his dislikes of what he saw. In this film it becomes clear that Harada was criticizing many of the old, traditionalist approaches to the purest Japanese culture. In the readings Harada talks about how he hated the fact that son was being made fun of because of his broken Japanese and the fact that this was still an issue. This kind of racist hate toward un-Japanese people was shown in the character Kantake. Kantake the taxi cap driver was constantly speaking broken Japanese and being excluded from the rest of the Japanese. During the scene of the self-building exercise Kantake was set apart from the rest of the group and Kantake hardly never speaks at all during the entire film. Even at the climax when Kantake confronts Domon, Domon still insults Kantake by saying that he is a third rate Japanese, born from a second rate Japanese. Harada focused on the Japanese born or raised in South America and their experiences when they returned to Japan in his film Kamikaze Taxi.
I started out liking the movie, but by half way through, it’d gotten so convoluted that I found myself just waiting for it to be over. The film truly didn’t need to be as long as it was. While it is important to develop character and relationships in a movie that’s part buddy-action flick, it didn’t feel like time or events were being used as efficiently as possible. This should either have been split into multiple parts or reduced. Tama’s reintroduction into the movie seemed to only clutter it further. The two buddies in the usual buddy action flick are already accounted for by Kantake and Tatsuo. The article talked about the camera work being unnecessary (though beautiful) but I thought there were more outstanding issues.
Harada’s critique of racism and prejudice in Japan is commendable, particularly in the beginning. It very much reminded me of the American movies where a majority character learns from the minority character. The long speeches about Kantake’s past and Peru, while sometimes interesting, were numerous, lengthy and overly reverent, and seemed to exist mainly to educate the audience (Gran Torino anyone?). But perhaps I lost interest because I know a little more about South America than someone on the other hemisphere.
Kantake didn’t seem to show much emotion. I can understand the stoicism as a person struggling with Japanese when talking to native speakers, but Kantake seemed to lack emotion overall. I did think Domon was portrayed fairly well, serving his purpose as an example of what Harada sees as wrong with Japanese society: sexism, racism, misplaced pride in his role in what he saw as an honorable war. I particularly liked the TV broadcast scene. Pitting Domon against the career women he despises displays his views (particularly when he tells the women to wait until he’s finished talking before they can say anything) without him having to state them (though he does in the end with a “I think all of our country’s problems are caused by you career women).
Masato Harada’s Kamikaze Taxi is an exploration of what it means to be Japanese. Throughout the film’s narrative a lot of interesting parallels and contradictions are raised through the various character’s actions and words.
The film begins as a documentary focused on the difficulties Japanese-born South Americans experience upon returning to Japan. Although these immigrants are of Japanese blood and have Japanese names, many in Japan regard them as second-rate citizens. Within Harada’s film, the politician Domon is the embodiment of this attitude. As Kamikaze Taxi transitions out of its documentary style, Domon is introduced as a corrupt politician that goes through the yakuza to arrange prostitutes for himself. He accuses Tatsuo of sounding Korean, establishing his distaste for things un-Japanese. Immediately thereafter, Domon is depicted appearing on television, in an official capacity, parading his ideas of what traditional Japanese values are. He obviously fancies himself a true Japanese, citing his service as a kamikaze pilot, yet he is perhaps the vilest character in the film, severely abusing prostitutes and looking down his nose at anything that even seems to be foreign.
Domon’s foil is the Japanese-born, Peruvian immigrant taxi driver, Kantake. Perhaps due to his lack of Japanese language proficiency or his humble nature, Kantake doesn’t speak much and thus isn’t portrayed as being very critical of others. He is hardworking and goes to great lengths to help Tatsuo even the score with his former yakuza boss and Domon.
Whereas the tendency of film interpretation might be to suggest that in Kamikaze Taxi, Harada is trying to show that a compassionate Peruvian immigrant has a better grasp on Japanese values than a self-proclaimed traditional Japanese politician does, this film left me with a different impression. I think that Domon is undoubtedly more representative of Japan than Kantake, who spent most of his life isolated from Japan, growing up in Peru. The fact that Domon is corrupt, morally and professionally, and a twisted pervert while the very un-Japanese Kantake is a man of pure intentions is indicative of Harada’s intent for Kamikaze Taxi to be a social commentary centered on his distaste for certain prominent features of contemporary Japanese culture.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kamikaze Taxi I think because it was one of those movies that after it’s completed you feel as though you have just watched a film unlike any other you have ever seen. Obviously anyone could draw plenty of parallels between these films, such as the sudden and cruel violence similar to what was seen in the taiyozoku films like Crazed Fruit, and the one could still stick it in with a genre (“yakuza” or “road trip” as mentioned in the article). I therefore cant honestly say it’s completely unique (not that such a concept exists in any art; as it is said “art imitates art.” However it is clear that Kamikaze Taxi is still something very distinctive. From the first few graphic scenes of violence, sex, and dirty language, we are introduced to a gritty yakuza world not unlike the ones presented by Seijun Suzuki in Youth of the Beast, but the documentary style makes the audience feeling as though they are watching real-time true events through interviews with real immigrants. The mixture of documented “true” footage and fabricated/acted footage creates a very unique experience and causes us as the audience to not only question what we are watching, but is a clear message from Harada that the film, even if partly fictional, is addressing a real world issue affecting real world people, many of whom are forced to a position of obscurity in Japanese culture where their only solace is from other recluses (the bar where many of the interviews take place is blatently stated as a place for immigrants to gather together). This is similar to the position Kantake and Tatsuo find themselves in, both are “recluses” of sorts; Kantake as a Peru emigrant and Tatsuo as a man forced in to hiding from the mob. The plot takes a strange twist that seems to make absolutely no sense within genre contexts about halfway through the length of the film in which both of the main characters take part in a road trip and suddenly the intense yakuza chase plotline is completely cast aside to focus on our heroes, as Tatsuo notes “living life to the fullest.” The scenes involving the onsen hot springs take up a large part of the plot, and indeed seem to be an entirely different movie that has no effect on the money/yakuza plotline. However, upon a second look, one can realize that this is an important and central part of the main theme that permeates the entire film; the sense of identity conflict for Japanese immigrants and finding a common sense of “japaneseness.” The scenes culminate in the sequence where Kantake finally reveals to the others (and the audience) his past. This all endears the audience to him and when his final fight with Domon, Harada’s message is clear to us that our support should be with those like Kantake, the good-willed immigrants struggling from hard lives in a culture that refuses to embrace them because of their difference. Harada points out the flaws in the superiority conflict of “true japaneseness” by through the flawed stances of Domon; he is merely a false hero whose views of nationalism are flawed by selfishness and a desire to selfishly further himself and his stance/honor at the expense otheres (he was merely a drug peddler to kamikaze pilots, as suggested by Kantake). Even Tatsuo’s boss falls victim to a bullet at the end, bringing Kantake’s message to a clear point; those who champion nationalism/superiority at the expense of others, and even those who support them (ie Tatsuo’s boss) are the enemies of morality and perhaps even the true Japanese spirit.
In a country as homogeneous as Japan, even the smallest difference can make a person stand out like a sore thumb. The Japanese value this sameness - "the nail that stands up gets hammered down" or so it goes. With such an emphasis on cultural oneness the story portrayed in Kamikaze Taxi becomes all the more poignant. The senator Domon embodies this ideal: the superior Japanese is the masculine, traditional type. Women and foreigners should know their place, below that of the 'pure' Japanese male such as himself. Yet he is far from ideal: sadistic, deranged, abusive, vengeful. From such a person these arguments seem to have almost no value, at least as far as I can tell. Obviously I genuinely disagree with his stance about women as one who sure does not want to be tied down to the will of a man, but I am hardly the only one. So it is easy to sympathize with the so called protagonists of the film, feeling oppressed by the roles society has laid out for them. Tatsuo as a pimp who makes the mistake of falling in love with a prostitute, and when Domon's disrespectful antics cause her death he sets off on a mission of revenge. The taxi driver Kantake on the other hand is a former emigré who made the mistake of returning to his birthplace of Japan, where after spending most of his life in Peru, marrying a Peruvian, and becoming heavily involved in drug wars there has really become more Peruvian than Japanese. This of course has a negative impact on his relations in Japan; his Japanese is broken so he can no longer pass himself as a “true Japanese”, making him an outcast in society. Thus these two become a perfect combination to carry out this vendetta. It's a dark sort of humour that makes this story intriguing all the way through and among the best we have viewed thus far – every little remark has some significance later on, and nothing is more important than showing that it is our differences that make us all strong.

I think solar offers the consumer less of a pyschological barrier compared to wind. Wind offers too many problems for consumers due to moving parts, wind location etc etc, but solar is passive and easy to maintain.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

It seems, however, that it is only through the most extreme example of Domon does this prevalent conservative outlook become known. The self-realization seminar showed that, although these characters are aware of the prejudices in Japanese culture, they still perpetuate them through their exclusion and treatment of Tama and Kantake. Kantake is literally barred from the seminar by a barrier of pillows which the seminar leader places around him at the start. Kantake also does not speak throughout the entire seminar, even though the leader tells the group of the importance of listening to the ideas of everyone involved. Tama is also considered to be an outcast of the group. She is caught up in her own little “shell” and does not participate with everyone else and, as a result, she is subject to ridicule. This is similar to how the Japanese viewed non-native Japanese. Non-native Japanese have their own experiences away from the centralized group and this difference makes them subject to criticism. Even though the seminar taught the people involved to value their individuality, it was this individualism that created problems for both Tama and Kantake. It is this underlying traditionalism that creates the basis by which the Japanese judge a person individually.
In Kamikaze Taxi, masculinity is consistently paired with morality in defining the “good” and the “bad” characters. Tatsuo is young and attractive. A graphic sex scene and several comments on his penis size characterize Tatsuo’s prolific sex drive. However, his sexuality does not override his family morals: Tatsuo realizes that he should be taking care of women rather than exploiting them. He wants to settle down with his girlfriend, but she is murdered by the yakuza. In a further display of his morals, the first thing Tatsuo does after robbing Domon is to buy his mother a new gravestone. At the end of the film, Kantake’s morals are also confirmed: he kills Domon for the sake of his father and Animaru for the sake of his friend. Domon, on the other hand, is contrasted with Tatsuo’s masculinity. He is a sexual pervert, beating prostitutes for pleasure. His masculinity in relation to a man’s role in the family is undermined when, even though he has bodyguards, his house is broken into twice. In addition to sex, violence is also used as an indicator of masculinity. During several fight scenes, Tatsuo manages to get an upper hand over a group of yakuza, further proving his masculinity. Kantake’s character also proves himself using violence: he overwhelms the yakuza and their guns using purely physical weapons such as a baseball bat. However, Tatsuo and Kantake’s use of violence differs from that of the yakuza. Tatsuo and Kantake fight even when their odds of winning are small, whereas the yakuza outnumber their victims, bullying them and using torture. Animaru and Domon rely on others to fight for and protect them. In one scene, Kantake helps Tatsuo escape being tortured by some yakuza. They tie up the yakuza but do not resort to torture to find Animaru’s whereabouts. Tatsuo instead lays side-by-side with the man and chats with him: the man immediately betrays his boss. The yakuza’s masculinity is called into question: he is wearing feminine underwear and only has one testicle. His morality is also challenged: he murdered Tatsuo’s friend and betrays his boss. Tatsuo and Kantake are portrayed as masculine and morally upright whereas the yakuza and Domon are cowardly and corrupt.

I think the biggest thing that I noticed about Kamikaze Taxi was the choice to go back and forth between documentary and action when handling some very serious political issues. Political corruption, yakusa, prostitution, racial prejudice against Japanese who grew up abroad are all very involved issues, and the film took them head on. The film could have easily been done as a straight action flick, but then the realism, and the statement about that realism would then have been lessened. It seemed to be a very active choice to blend the general entertainment value of the film with the harsh reality of a politically turbulent (as mentioned) time in Japan's history.
I'll also bring out the relation to my last paper, in which I discussed woman's rights in Japan. Saying that women belong in the kitchen, while quite possibly a very real opinion at the time, would still have been quite politically dangerous to say.
Senator Domon, as a character, was corrupt as they come though, and created and overwhelming sense of “I'm the evil one”. A little over the top, but it was effective non-the-less at making a political point about the time. I find it interesting that I didn't notice any really redeeming qualities to the presentation of the yakusa. I seem to have come to expect every group, judged good or bad by the population, to have some trait that I consider worth of respect.

Being African American myself, I could only think of similar issues within our own society (not to mention that the article for Popular Music and Media in Modern Japan, that we had to read to Thursday).
In watching the movie, I wonder if the beginning is supposed to be a metaphor for a person with no sense of direction (referring to the main character Tatsuo, as being nothing more than a day pimp). Then after he witnesses something that he doesn’t like, Tatsuo begins to transform from a droid to a person (full of emotion) with a cause/ mission. Also the number of references in the movie relating to kamikaze (meaning Divine Wind) brings up an important question within Japanese society relating to “changing, but changing for the better”. Similar to what Masato Harada tried to bring to the main screen. The article we had to read for the Tuesday (11/10/09) mentions that this film was made out of genuine anger (apparently about his son being bullied or his English-Japanese accent). How can you made such a transformational movie out of pure irritation?
I also noted that the paper mentioned Harada’s infatuation with Hollywood. “The director is not trying to compete with Hollywood. He is trying to seduce it” (Course reader, 200). Why is Harada trying so hard to influence Hollywood with such issues as Japaneseness? Hollywood can confront people with such issues, but more than likely it will either further instill those stereotypes, or just deepen certain stereotypes.
Whatever the case, I thought the movie was good, but my favorite is still Rashomon.

The break down makes it clear, that it is important to be “ a man” and the top men are the ones in power such as the politicians and the yakuza. Within these two orders, which are presented much the same. It is shown that a real man has no feelings and thinks of women as objects and only cares for himself. This is shown through the graphic language used. The men frequently talk about sex. There a number of references to size of “dick” relating to courage or power. The scene rounds off this ideal nicely, where Tama is severely beaten, and Tatsuo’s girlfriend is murdered. There is little emotion shown in the yakuza members, if anything it is annoyance that they have to deal with the women.
This unhealthy view of masculinity is something that Tatsuo believes in the beginning, but starts to fade quickly. He has a soliloquy about women taking care of him, and how she should take care of his girlfriend. He admits that this is desire, but can not achieve it because his leaders treat women as if they are only sex objects, so if he is to succeed in their world, he must do the same. This is tested as he watches his beloved girlfriend murdered by his boss but does nothing. This is the breaking point.
From here on in Tatsuo breaks away from the yakuza idea of what a man should be. He robs them and then is on the run. He teams up with the taxi driver as he prepares for his final move, the “kamikaze”. Outside of the world of power he creates his first health relationship with another male. Although the taxi driver is a foreign worker, he and Tatsuo bond. This relationship is created to show how the human can thrive outside of the skewed world of gender roles.
(It is refreshing to see the gangster held in a different light then the American cinema, where they are larger then life heroes, tragic heroes, but put on pedestals nonetheless. Also it was nice to see a male commenting on the flaws of masculinity in society, often times this point of view is presented through a woman, and I think it was more effective through the male perspective.)
The movie for this week was definitely a strange amalgamation of movie genre. The switch between documentary, yakuza, road film and 'buddy action flick' styles in the span of one movie was pretty disorientating as a viewer. In the readings it was pointed out that Kamakazi Taxi was a series of videos that combined was over 3 hours long. The movie was a condensed edit of this and was compiled for foreign audiences. This made a lot of sense when I read it and helped clear up a lot of complaints that I had with the films pacing and plot development. The movie has a strange side to it that never quite gets explained or commented on. Scenes like the 'self realization seminar' and the such, while interesting, seemed to be from a different movie. From the intense sexuality and violence in begging a softer tale begins to emerge that deals with issues of race and culture. However at the end of the movie we movie back into a world of extreme violence as the protagonist from Peru seals the deal Tetsuo started. This would work if I were watching it as a series of television programs in which this division from action to boring and back again would be justified across 2 or 3 episodes. For the most part I found this film to be engrossing, fun and hip but at the same time awkward. I could never quite get over Tetsuo's inability to speak up as his so called girlfriend is killed or his later decision to take in out on the senator. The plot in this respect seems to break down multiple times, but since we don't seem to much care why our characters are motivated, just that they are, such breaks are excuseble. At the end Cold Bamboos badass take down of the senator and the yakuza boss will stand in my mind as one of if not the coolest badass scenes ever. In sharp contrast the the shoddy attempts made by Tetsuo at violence, Cold Bamboo takes it to a whole new level, easily and calmly killing those he intends to get even with. Another point of interest to me in this film was the use of comedy. I found this movie to be extremely amusing. The constant quips for the characters aside the physical and situational comedy in this movie was subtle enough to not dominate the movie but good enough to off put the audience as the the true intentions of a scene. My favorite scene being when Tetsuo bursts into the Anima Realty office and goes tearing through shooting his guns, all the while a man on the couch calmly tends to his wounded leg, not once looking up. All in all this movie did a lot, some of which it did well and some of which it did not.. But love it or hate it there are scenes in this movie for everyone.
I think, while a skewed view of masculinity plays a role, there is certainly more than that at work. I think that the attitude presented by the men towards women should be considered also on the societal level. It is not just a view of masculinity, but also based on the culture that they are surrounded with. It seems that, from the footage of the debate between Domon (I think it was Domon) and the female commentator that ideas of gender equality were just beginning to come to Japan. Although, I believe that in earlier Japanese society, the Heian period at least, women did hold a higher place in society. I think there is also something about using people as material objects for personal gain in this movie. This applies to both men and women. Definitely it applies more about women, but there is also the use of Tatsuo by Domon to get women. More than that though, there is the use of lower ranking men by those in power to do dirty work for them. There is also the scene where Tatsuo’s friend, after they escape from Domon’s men, is talking about being a soccer goalie. One can only imagine what brought him from being a soccer player to a criminal. I recently read an article about playing football and head injuries. This article made the comparison between dog fighting and football. It happened to mention that after they left professional football many players in retirement slip into dementia and are forgotten by society. I think that if we remember what the inspiration for this movie was, that being the treatment of foreign-born Japanese in Japan, then we can look at this from another perspective. I think that these categories we use for telling how much respect we give to someone based on where they were born or their citizenship status provides an excuse for treating that person a certain way. If we use the term “prostitute” for someone that means you can treat that person as a sex object because somehow what they do is what they are. I suppose that’s a bit philosophical, but I think it has many implications for the way that we still treat people now.
Kamikaze Taxi was a a heck of a ride. The beginning scenes were documentary like in which footage of interviews were shown of the people living in the Japanese foreigner quarters. They immediately brought out the main issue that the film was going to address throughout its length. The discrimination against foreigners of Japanese descent. I was confused at first, as in class the character Kantake was mentioned but he did not make an appearance until a good way into the movie.My first reaction was that I got the wrong movie, I thought it was going to be about a taxi driver and a political film, but with the first scenes, there was a guy peeing, Tatsuo, and another guy Ishida looking at his penis. Then it switched to dirty politicians looking for a fix with hookers and then a sex scene with Tatsuo and his girlfriend. It was as if these scenes were not from the same movie at all; they didn't flow into each other and made me rather confused about what was actually going on until after Tatsuo and Kantake had met did it make any sense. I noticed a few things about the camera angle in this film, first off there were a few scenes that played absolutely no part in the plot, like during Tatsuo's sex scene it cuts to Domon leading some guy through his yard; what the hell was that? is what I thought to myself. Then there are a few scenes where the camera is way up high and gets a wide shot of the whole scene. This kind of gives a distanced feeling to the scene and what is going on, much like an outsider eavesdropping on one of their conversations. It also happens when Kantake kills Animaru and tells him his life story, the camera pulls away distancing us from the characters. The film was up and down, but I got to say I don't get what is so good about feeling each others' dick. I know it is a masculine symbol that is used rather a lot in gang, yakuza, mafia, and crime related films and stuff, but what is up with the feeling of dicks? Not to sound offensive, but I don't find any reason to touch another man's penis, let alone grope and cause it to become erect as in the scene where Tatsuo goes play pachinko and gets captured after the self activity. Another thing is in the way beginning, when Tatsuo's girlfriend is introducing the senator's new plaything, Tama. There is this girl in the background who is renting videos; both Tatsuo and his girlfriend get it on on the floor and she keeps inching closer and closer until she is right behind them. It's just weird, the whole movie was a roller coaster ride, but I did like it, Kantake is probably the coolest taxi driver ever, Queen Latifah comes second but only because her taxi can transform.

Kamikaze Taxi playing upon the notorious Tokkotai suicide bombers from WW2 and representing the frivolity of the Japanese customization of human sacrifice while at the same time directly confronts corruption and right-wing, anti-foreigner, nationalists within government, as well as in Japanese society in general. The film was complicated and extremely long and somewhat seeming like two or three films in one. Yet, the film still carries certain continuity, though, reaching hard for it at times. The characters are very atypical compared to other films that carry similar plot themes, gives the impression that it is somehow fresh.
The violence, for one, seemed out of place relative to the coolness of the characters. The Yakuza kid who knows the fate about to catch up with him after crossing his mob-boss seems unaffected, or just oblivious to the chaos and death all around him. The ex-prostitute, whose upbringing has prepared her for her obliviousness in the face of shootouts and murder, seems more distant to the violence and carries a performance that makes her seem colder than a hardened veteran. The depth and coolness in the Japanese Peruvian taxi driver complete with an Andean flute, gracefully fulfilling the role of the Ronin in the film. In actuality, all three are ronin, all abandoned by their former employers and protectorates. The bluntness of the objectifying of women and how it is condemned in the film, starting with the murder of the prostitute/girlfriend of the young yakuza, places emphasis on what the director wants the viewer to see, which is, that these guys are real, they are in cahoots with the government who then are unleashed on the people, maintaining their position of oppression. The TV scenes of the senator appearing on televised forum, interestingly characterizes anti-foreigner and anti-feminist sentiments that are so blatant in the view yet portrayed in a manner that makes the comments seem like normal political jargon. The placement of these attacks on the right wingers of Japan positions itself against the WW2 generation and its symbolization of oppression, not only on Japanese but also non-Japanese. Confronting the Kamikaze and describing the comparison to the act as one of bravery and self-sacrifice for a greater cause versus the drug-induced actions of a scared kid driving himself to his death. It is important to note that blame was NOT laid on the backs of the pilots themselves, but rather on the back of the commanders who sent them on their “mission.” Those who turned back were said to be disgraced, yet the film also implies that disgrace is a matter of opinion: the father of Kantake, the taxi driver, is revealed to have served as a kamikaze pilot but refused to take the drugs issued to him and possibly enabling him to not follow through with the attack and instead dropped his bombs in the ocean and turned his plane around and flew home. It was an uncommon film, tied together with familiar story lines, but portrayed in a different, modern and liberal Japanese light.
Kamikaze taxi is an interesting piece of movie making because it incorporates many different styles and genres throughout. Like we discussed in class, the film switches between documentary and traditional film styles first starting with regular people (i'm not sure if they are normal people or actors) and then the characters of the film in documentary style. It was very informative to learn about how the Japanese view others that had no choice in where they were born or where they moved to when they were young, and how they discriminate so viciously throughout society. The reading provided much more insight about the director's son being highly bullied and scrutinized due to his living in the United States. The film also focuses on woman's rights for a bit in the beginning and it's appalling to listen to the Senator talk, explicitly, about keeping women in the kitchen. As a side note, the history on the comfort women of WWII is incredible and just plain evil. Unfortunately, there is some violence against women, but not throughout the film, thankfully.
Kamikaze Taxi reminds me that even though we've made a lot of progress in society, we still have a long way to go. Watching this film shows how Japan was (at least in 1995) and I reflect on how we are here in America and I'm certain that we all need improvement.
Kamikaze taxi was a rather unusual film, that seemed to follow a certain pattern. Things happened in the manner of morbid, disgusting, happy, sad, and these attributes would repeat themselves over and over again. The music in the movie was amazing, especially the theme that was played with the flute when showing a seen with the Peruvian, Japanese man Kantake. This movie seemed to be quite broken, in the sense that you are not sure exactly who the main character is, and characters that you thought were not important seemed to show back up constantly. There was a thirty minute slot where nothing happens but fun between the main characters. Granted it is a happy build up to the uber sad story that Kantake is going to tell. Kantake almost seems to be the semi cool emo kid, except he is 30 years old. Why does Kantake stay with Tatsuo that whole time, he has no reason to keep staying with him, he constantly says that he is not interested in the money that Tatsuo has. Then again not having any reason at all to do something can sometimes be a legitimate reason for doing things. The end was the absolute most important part of the movie. When he, the timid emo kid, rips apart the mental well being of Domon, totally destroying his ideals of him being a kamikaze pilot. I think that it was meant to be interpreted that Domon has a heart attack while trying to kill Kantake, when the Kamikaze, or the enormous gust, blows him against the wall. Is his justification of this killing of Domon and Animaru an act of revenge, the will of his father, both, or was he planning this the entire time and was using Tatsuo as a tool or a means of justifying his actions? Whatever the reason the fact that Domon needed to die was apparent. I was just waiting to see is it was going to be Kantake or if it was going to be Tatsuo. This idea of the quite, yet emotionally destroyed individual, which goes on a killing spree as an act of revenge, seems to be a kind of overplayed trope that crops up in films. It is masked by the fact that there is a lot of things that happen to the characters that have nothing to do with the progression of the story.

The movie opens up with what looks like a documentary style moment, it tricks the viewer into thinking it is some sort of documentary. But then as the films goes on it becomes obvious that the events that are taking place in the film have not really happened. Then it becomes clear that this is a proper movie instead of a documentary. The film progresses on to show the actions of the yakuza tatsuo, who seeking revenge falls from his position and is forced to run from the yakuza. Similar to other movies the reasons that tatsuo was seeking revenge was becomes a woman that wanted to settle down with him was killed by the yakuza. Woman seems to be the reasons for a lot of yakuza turning against the gang, because we have seen it in other movies.
In the movie we also see the corruption of a right wing politician. The movie shows the right-winger in the worst light possible, which he quite deserves. Beaches the right-winger is probably the most horrible character in the entire movie. This is the film makers attack on the right wingers.
The interviews are done in the style of a documentary, and look as if they are done after the movie. Even through when watching the movie is seems hard to believe because the characters that give the interviews may die before the movie is ended. Therefore it would be hard for them to give interviews after the movie, and illogical for those who have sat down during the action to give an interview. So the interviews don’t really fit with the progression of the movie, and in a small way work against the continuous plot of events.
Yet the interviews also deepen the understanding that the viewer has of the characters and their place in the movie. In one of the interviews in the beginning of the movie we see an interview with tatsuo, and in that interview it is revealed that he was considering settling down with the prostitute that had asked him to before. Without this crucial interview it would have been impossible for the view to divine his feelings. So in a real way the interviews depthen out understanding of the characters and strengthen the movie in fundamental ways.
Kamikaze Taxi seemed to be made of contradictions. First off, it is a documentary, but it most definitely isn’t. The interviews with the random characters just felt so right even as they paused the flow for a moment. The strange shot angles (like the balcony shot down on Tatsuo and Tama in his house) seemed like some camera guy was just hanging out in the house, but then other shots were set up far too perfectly (I believe it was during the discussion with the new-age death cult guy and the candles in the lanterns acted as glorious set pieces). It even had a moment of documentary within documentary (similar some what to the movie within a movie of I was born but...) when the boys are filling each other while hanging out at the festival. There the shaky camera of true documentary was seen, but it didn’t break the illusion created by the main camera…that is, didn’t make the rest of the movie seem any less real. That is how they fool around in front of the camera and this is how they act when the camera goes away. Still crazy, but make a lot less peace symbols.
At first, I was a little horrified by the scene in the rural weapons house when the boys are caught by the yakuza, but then stepped in the other great contradiction to gloss over the bloodshed; the music. It was so very strange to be watching people shooting each other like mad, but all the while listening to lilting flute music and thinking tra-de-la-de-daa! We’re running for our lives, but isn’t it just GREAT?!!! Which, I suppose, is the whole idea behind Tatsuo’s actions. The mob doesn’t go check out the onsen, because they think Tatsuo should be scared and holed up somewhere desperate to survive. Not doing the chu-chu line with a bunch of women, a taxi driver, and Charlie Chaplin.
Though, I have to say if there was a message in the movie what I got was ‘we could actually be friends.’ It was just perfect when the yakuza boss (Animaru) said that to the other man in the van about Kantake. Throughout the movie, there are these moments where enemies don’t really look like enemies anymore. Tatsuo and the gangster lie laughing on the ground, sharing some inner secrets about Animaru…and then Tatsuo shoots him because he shot Tatsuo’s friend. Chidori comments that he really enjoys the smooth sax of the record he finally bought and then we learn Animaru is a sax player. Murderous bodyguard Chidori has a soft spot and Animaru, when not beating people with sticks, is a musician. And at the very end, Animaru with his wide smile and friendly “Heeeeeeeeeeey, I wanted to talk to you earlier!” and then Kantake shoots him. But Animaru still wants to talk and have someone around when he dies. If there wasn’t all the other crap in the world, this could be a large bunch of decently interesting people who could have gotten along amicably.
Matsato Harada’s Kamikaze Taxi is an interesting genre bending look at what it means to be Japanese. The film begins with a documentary style prolgue about the trials of Brazillian immigrants in Japan. Afterwards the films style switches back and forth between a Yakuza film, American road movie, and an art house picture. In doing so, Harada is able to create a post-modern style of filmmaking that utilizes the various genres as a metaphor for what it means to be truly Japanese. Spawning from the segregation and discrimination his son experienced during school Harada states, “I was so frustrated. I made Kamikaze Taxi based on that anger.” Harada presents the audience with the character of Kantake and as the reading states, “Harada builds numerous subtle references to the ‘divine wind,” Harada shows Kantake as the epitome of discrimination constantly oppressed because of his upbringing. In Kamikaze Taxi, not only does the narrative function as a critique on discrimination, specifically the relationship between Tatsuo and the driver, but also the way in which Harada constructs the story. By switching tones, and genre Harada creates a pastiche that questions what it means to be truly Japanese and what it means to make a Japanese film. He simultaneously questions whether a film can be Japanese and still have a heavily American influence, and if a person raised in South America is as Japanese as any other citizen. The film also treads the line between grisly violence and philosophical ruminations on life. Kamikaze Taxi, begins in the gritty Yakuza, and then 180 shift half way through the movie when the characters seek respite at a spy and then go through an uplifting self-realization seminar that causes them all to examine their lives. This illustrates Harada’s underlying theme of challenging the audience to look at their own lives and question how they not only view the world and their own lives but also the people around them.

“Kamikaze Taxi” raises some very important questions and makes some key points in the discussion of what defines “Japaneseness.” The director, Harada Masato, uses an interesting mix of film elements. The documentary style in the beginning of the movie shows the true, or realistic, side of the national argument. The audience receives a sense of validity because, although the storyline is fiction, the themes and messages are proven to have significance in the viewers’ lives. One central theme of “Kamikaze Taxi” is the ostracizing of Japanese blood-born citizens that were raised outside of Japan; the main example being the taxi driver, Kantake. Tatsuo essentially throws Kantake into the action of the film by taking his taxi as part of his flee plan. As Kantake and Tatsuo continue on their journey, we learn about the taxi driver’s past life. Born in Japan, but raised in Peru, Kantake came back to Japan and was forced to work as a low-class taxi driver. With shotty Japanese language skills, he is unable to find other work and is shunned by the society and culture of his own heritage. This frustration and anger leads Kantake to join forces with Tatsuo to combat Domon, “a man who symbolizes the society that has spit him out.” (Mes, 88). Mes describes Harada’s ability to question traditional values and the beliefs of what defines “Japaneseness.” Strong symbolism can be seen as derived from the director’s own experiences. As a former Hollywood film critic, Harada returned to Japan where his son was a victim of the lack of acceptance of foreign Japanese.
A second central theme is issues of masculinity. Power is a theme that can be traced back to the earliest of films, including Ozu’s 1932 film, “I was born, but…” However, it is a difficult feat to compare “Kamikaze Taxi” to the traditional values of Ozu’s themes of Japanese familial issues. But an interesting contrast between Western films (specifically, American) and Japanese films (and European) can be drawn from this theme of masculinity. American films are notorious throughout the world for the violence and brutality of both storylines and characters. Whereas, Japanese films, such as “Kamikaze Taxi,” involves nudity and sex that is not seen in common Hollywood films. Both film worlds use their polar opposites to demonstrate themes of masculinity – violent characters for Hollywood films and sexually dominant characters for Japanese films.

My first impression of this film was a that it would be another documentary… I was far from correct on this matter. Kamikaze Taxi was a terribly heart wrenching film that left many who, what , where, and whys of the action of the characters n the film. The film centers on Tatsuo a low-level, short-tempered gangster moving up in the pimping business. His new job was laded ,due to the fact the old person has been promoted. Yet, when he sends out his one and only hooker Tama found by his girlfriend to service a wizened politician, she returns beaten, battered, and bruised. A horrific term is used to describe what the elderly senator did to her, but the a doctor insists that she stays bed ridden for a week. When Tatsuo's girlfriend complains, she is killed by crime boss Animaru as Tatsuo is forced to look on. Seeking revenge, he and his posse trash the politician's house and swipe a stack of 2 million yen. In retaliation, Tatsuo's own bosses put a hit out on them. After a bloody shoot out in a forest, the protagonist is the only one to emerge alive. He hails a cab with the aim of making a suicide run at the gang's HQ, but the cabbie proves to be a Peruvian returnee, who speaks in a strange accent and can't read a Japanese map. Though at first the driver seems wide-eyed and innocent, he reveals an inner strength in chaotic situations. Soon the two seem less like a passenger and driver and more like two allies in the same beleaguered army.
The film plays on many parts of the racism, that engulfed Japan during the 1990’s. Let alone the interviews of individuals recounting terrible events against them, for just being Japanese but born else where. It is sickening and is reflected in the film, with language and other hints. Though the film is gruesome, it carries a heavy message to its viewers about equality, and making the right decisions at the correct time, rather then waiting and just dieing in the end.
Kamikaze Taxi was yet again, another unique Japanese approach to film. I thought it was very apparent that this style was different than other directors and Harada was very skilled when he made this film. The mix of documentary style in the beginning pulls the audience in from ‘reality’ to the ‘fiction’ of the yakuza/Japanese emigrant story. In a nutshell I feel it is a type of revenge story and a type of justice-seeking story due to the fact that Tatsu is out to get the Yakuza for killing his girlfriend while Kantake takes up his unfinished business in the name of Tatsu’s death and to justify his existence as a real Japanese when the Yakuza boss believes he is not worth a what a native-born Japanese is worth. Kantake’s past is slowly unraveled throughout the film and his emotions run deep in connection to his Peruvian homeland where he saw horrors brought on by guerilla warfare with women and children while no one came to help them. When he confronts the yakuza boss at the end of the film, the audience finds out his father was a kamikaze pilot as well but the boss insults him and calls him a coward. Kantake gives reasons why he could have done what he did, despite his poor Japanese skills. The scene escalates into a fight but I was confused why Kantake didn’t fight back until the window shattered and a large wind entered the room, throwing the boss off him. Kantake had spoken about this as real kamikaze wind from the Andes in Peru but I felt it pushed the envelope between the real and the fantastical too much. However, I overlooked it in favor for how the last scene with Animaru is shot. Kantake easily is able to shoot the sought after villain and as he lays dying, asks for Kantake to tell him why he was shot and to tell his story. Slowly Kantake fumbles with reciting it as the camera pulls out of the misty bamboo forest when I realized Kantake had told the boss his name was spelled ‘cold bamboo’. This tie to Kantake’s pastoral love for nature, along with his name as the final setting sealed the ending of the film perfectly, at least in my thoughts.
The film wasn't really what I was expecting. The reading mentions that Harada uses a mixture of genres but the documentary opening didn't prepare me for the slightly violent and sexually explicit topics in the film. It's separated by the different genres. The film feels as if it's cut into sections by film style rather than totally flowing together as one piece but I like the concept behind it's construction. I also thought the sound in the film was interesting. There's rarely music and it's only the flute music that comes on generally as diegetic music but then turns into non-diegetic.
Harada seems to try to raise social issues in his films. We talked about how "Kamikaze Taxi" focussed on a very specific kind of discrimination based more on culture and language. But there was a lot of sexism and questions of gender throughout the story. The film centers on male relationships like most previous films we've watched. The bad guy, Domon is demonstrated to be bad by his treatment of women. He openly said that women should be in the kitchen and those who aren't are the ones creating problems for everyone else.
I thought it was interesting that Tatsuo says in a documentary-like interview scene that because he thinks of women as meaningful people, he can't truly be a part of the yakuza. Yet later, when his girlfriend is freaking out about how badly her friend was beaten, he apologizes to one of his superiors and does nothing to stop her murder. Tatsuo talks about how he values women in more private conversations but doesn't completely act upon this in the world of men. I can understand that he wouldn't want to further upset his boss, but he just stood there and watched Renko die. He can't try to prevent her harm but he can put together a heist? Plus, while she was still alive Renko, seemed used by Tatsuo for sex and being whored out. Maybe he doesn't exploit women and use them as objects the way the yakuza did, but women clearly have one major purpose for him.
I really enjoyed seeing this film by Masto Harada and his very unique filming styles. Kamikaze Taxi is about a young yakuza member named Tatsuo who through his connections with prostitution ends up robbing a corrupt politician for torturing and killing one of his girls. The mob catches Tatsuo and his gang and soon Tatsuo is the only one left alive running for his life with millions of tainted cash and vows to go on a kamikaze mission to seek revenge upon Animaru and Domon. Along the way Tatsuo comes across a Peruvian taxi cab driver that recently arrived back in Japan after living the majority of his life back in South America and he is struggling to cope with poverty and the prejudices of native-born Japanese.
Because of Masto Harada’s work history abroad it allowed for him to gain the perspective of an outsider to the Japanese culture and to let him be less bound by the ruling mores in voicing his dislikes of what he saw. In this film it becomes clear that Harada was criticizing many of the old, traditionalist approaches to the purest Japanese culture. In the readings Harada talks about how he hated the fact that son was being made fun of because of his broken Japanese and the fact that this was still an issue. This kind of racist hate toward un-Japanese people was shown in the character Kantake. Kantake the taxi cap driver was constantly speaking broken Japanese and being excluded from the rest of the Japanese. During the scene of the self-building exercise Kantake was set apart from the rest of the group and Kantake hardly never speaks at all during the entire film. Even at the climax when Kantake confronts Domon, Domon still insults Kantake by saying that he is a third rate Japanese, born from a second rate Japanese. Harada focused on the Japanese born or raised in South America and their experiences when they returned to Japan in his film Kamikaze Taxi.
I started out liking the movie, but by half way through, it’d gotten so convoluted that I found myself just waiting for it to be over. The film truly didn’t need to be as long as it was. While it is important to develop character and relationships in a movie that’s part buddy-action flick, it didn’t feel like time or events were being used as efficiently as possible. This should either have been split into multiple parts or reduced. Tama’s reintroduction into the movie seemed to only clutter it further. The two buddies in the usual buddy action flick are already accounted for by Kantake and Tatsuo. The article talked about the camera work being unnecessary (though beautiful) but I thought there were more outstanding issues.
Harada’s critique of racism and prejudice in Japan is commendable, particularly in the beginning. It very much reminded me of the American movies where a majority character learns from the minority character. The long speeches about Kantake’s past and Peru, while sometimes interesting, were numerous, lengthy and overly reverent, and seemed to exist mainly to educate the audience (Gran Torino anyone?). But perhaps I lost interest because I know a little more about South America than someone on the other hemisphere.
Kantake didn’t seem to show much emotion. I can understand the stoicism as a person struggling with Japanese when talking to native speakers, but Kantake seemed to lack emotion overall. I did think Domon was portrayed fairly well, serving his purpose as an example of what Harada sees as wrong with Japanese society: sexism, racism, misplaced pride in his role in what he saw as an honorable war. I particularly liked the TV broadcast scene. Pitting Domon against the career women he despises displays his views (particularly when he tells the women to wait until he’s finished talking before they can say anything) without him having to state them (though he does in the end with a “I think all of our country’s problems are caused by you career women).
Masato Harada’s Kamikaze Taxi is an exploration of what it means to be Japanese. Throughout the film’s narrative a lot of interesting parallels and contradictions are raised through the various character’s actions and words.
The film begins as a documentary focused on the difficulties Japanese-born South Americans experience upon returning to Japan. Although these immigrants are of Japanese blood and have Japanese names, many in Japan regard them as second-rate citizens. Within Harada’s film, the politician Domon is the embodiment of this attitude. As Kamikaze Taxi transitions out of its documentary style, Domon is introduced as a corrupt politician that goes through the yakuza to arrange prostitutes for himself. He accuses Tatsuo of sounding Korean, establishing his distaste for things un-Japanese. Immediately thereafter, Domon is depicted appearing on television, in an official capacity, parading his ideas of what traditional Japanese values are. He obviously fancies himself a true Japanese, citing his service as a kamikaze pilot, yet he is perhaps the vilest character in the film, severely abusing prostitutes and looking down his nose at anything that even seems to be foreign.
Domon’s foil is the Japanese-born, Peruvian immigrant taxi driver, Kantake. Perhaps due to his lack of Japanese language proficiency or his humble nature, Kantake doesn’t speak much and thus isn’t portrayed as being very critical of others. He is hardworking and goes to great lengths to help Tatsuo even the score with his former yakuza boss and Domon.
Whereas the tendency of film interpretation might be to suggest that in Kamikaze Taxi, Harada is trying to show that a compassionate Peruvian immigrant has a better grasp on Japanese values than a self-proclaimed traditional Japanese politician does, this film left me with a different impression. I think that Domon is undoubtedly more representative of Japan than Kantake, who spent most of his life isolated from Japan, growing up in Peru. The fact that Domon is corrupt, morally and professionally, and a twisted pervert while the very un-Japanese Kantake is a man of pure intentions is indicative of Harada’s intent for Kamikaze Taxi to be a social commentary centered on his distaste for certain prominent features of contemporary Japanese culture.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kamikaze Taxi I think because it was one of those movies that after it’s completed you feel as though you have just watched a film unlike any other you have ever seen. Obviously anyone could draw plenty of parallels between these films, such as the sudden and cruel violence similar to what was seen in the taiyozoku films like Crazed Fruit, and the one could still stick it in with a genre (“yakuza” or “road trip” as mentioned in the article). I therefore cant honestly say it’s completely unique (not that such a concept exists in any art; as it is said “art imitates art.” However it is clear that Kamikaze Taxi is still something very distinctive. From the first few graphic scenes of violence, sex, and dirty language, we are introduced to a gritty yakuza world not unlike the ones presented by Seijun Suzuki in Youth of the Beast, but the documentary style makes the audience feeling as though they are watching real-time true events through interviews with real immigrants. The mixture of documented “true” footage and fabricated/acted footage creates a very unique experience and causes us as the audience to not only question what we are watching, but is a clear message from Harada that the film, even if partly fictional, is addressing a real world issue affecting real world people, many of whom are forced to a position of obscurity in Japanese culture where their only solace is from other recluses (the bar where many of the interviews take place is blatently stated as a place for immigrants to gather together). This is similar to the position Kantake and Tatsuo find themselves in, both are “recluses” of sorts; Kantake as a Peru emigrant and Tatsuo as a man forced in to hiding from the mob. The plot takes a strange twist that seems to make absolutely no sense within genre contexts about halfway through the length of the film in which both of the main characters take part in a road trip and suddenly the intense yakuza chase plotline is completely cast aside to focus on our heroes, as Tatsuo notes “living life to the fullest.” The scenes involving the onsen hot springs take up a large part of the plot, and indeed seem to be an entirely different movie that has no effect on the money/yakuza plotline. However, upon a second look, one can realize that this is an important and central part of the main theme that permeates the entire film; the sense of identity conflict for Japanese immigrants and finding a common sense of “japaneseness.” The scenes culminate in the sequence where Kantake finally reveals to the others (and the audience) his past. This all endears the audience to him and when his final fight with Domon, Harada’s message is clear to us that our support should be with those like Kantake, the good-willed immigrants struggling from hard lives in a culture that refuses to embrace them because of their difference. Harada points out the flaws in the superiority conflict of “true japaneseness” by through the flawed stances of Domon; he is merely a false hero whose views of nationalism are flawed by selfishness and a desire to selfishly further himself and his stance/honor at the expense otheres (he was merely a drug peddler to kamikaze pilots, as suggested by Kantake). Even Tatsuo’s boss falls victim to a bullet at the end, bringing Kantake’s message to a clear point; those who champion nationalism/superiority at the expense of others, and even those who support them (ie Tatsuo’s boss) are the enemies of morality and perhaps even the true Japanese spirit.
In a country as homogeneous as Japan, even the smallest difference can make a person stand out like a sore thumb. The Japanese value this sameness - "the nail that stands up gets hammered down" or so it goes. With such an emphasis on cultural oneness the story portrayed in Kamikaze Taxi becomes all the more poignant. The senator Domon embodies this ideal: the superior Japanese is the masculine, traditional type. Women and foreigners should know their place, below that of the 'pure' Japanese male such as himself. Yet he is far from ideal: sadistic, deranged, abusive, vengeful. From such a person these arguments seem to have almost no value, at least as far as I can tell. Obviously I genuinely disagree with his stance about women as one who sure does not want to be tied down to the will of a man, but I am hardly the only one. So it is easy to sympathize with the so called protagonists of the film, feeling oppressed by the roles society has laid out for them. Tatsuo as a pimp who makes the mistake of falling in love with a prostitute, and when Domon's disrespectful antics cause her death he sets off on a mission of revenge. The taxi driver Kantake on the other hand is a former emigré who made the mistake of returning to his birthplace of Japan, where after spending most of his life in Peru, marrying a Peruvian, and becoming heavily involved in drug wars there has really become more Peruvian than Japanese. This of course has a negative impact on his relations in Japan; his Japanese is broken so he can no longer pass himself as a “true Japanese”, making him an outcast in society. Thus these two become a perfect combination to carry out this vendetta. It's a dark sort of humour that makes this story intriguing all the way through and among the best we have viewed thus far – every little remark has some significance later on, and nothing is more important than showing that it is our differences that make us all strong.

I think solar offers the consumer less of a pyschological barrier compared to wind. Wind offers too many problems for consumers due to moving parts, wind location etc etc, but solar is passive and easy to maintain.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
