Week 13

Why does it seem like there is no such thing as a happy ending in Japanese film? No matter what the plot of the film, someone inevitably ends up dead, and in the case of Neon Genesis Evangelion, by somebody I of course mean everybody. This “film” was really just the final two episodes of the animated series, neatly wrapping up events. That being said, as I haven't seen much of the series (and what I had seen was almost a decade ago) right from the beginning of the film I was especially confused. Why is the government against NERV? What really did they do besides pilot these Evas? They really felt the need to so thoroughly destroy them?
Of course, it mattered not one bit who really was to blame for the folly that was the ensuing destruction of their headquarters, as everything around it was destroyed as well. Everyone was killed, some more quickly than others... The sheer amount of blood, gore, gunshots... Even the bakelite that they poured in the corridors was blood red; it was enough to make this pacifist sick to her stomach. This did, however, drill in the point of the impermanence, the ethereal nature of the world, of the universe. Human beings would not live forever, nor would our planet. The evangelion project began in order to ensure some proof of our very existence could continue. The ending of the film startled me the most; I wasn't quite sure if Shinji and Asuka were dead, if Asuka was and Shinji was just living inside his own mind, or somehow they had both ended up alive somewhere. Choking her had he had done in what was clearly some sort of dream state seemed to me like an odd thing to do, but as much as he had complained, whined, seemed very needy and incompetent perhaps it was just him finally lashing out.
Overall, either because I was continually confused as to what exactly the plot or context was or because of my aversion to such massive amounts of violence, I didn't particularly care for the film. I understand that it was a massive undertaking and even a revolutionary concept in animation, still, there is nothing in this world that is truly appreciated by everyone. Maybe looking at it from that perspective is the best way: just as people's ideas and opinions fade and lose meaning over time, so does the world, so anything that ever seemed awful or heartbreaking would fade away just as surely as happiness.

Evangelion is a seminal work in animation. It turned the mecha genera on its nose by creating mecha that was organic. It also set the standard for esoteric enigmatic plot-lines and subplot-lines, and with the sure measure of them one should and does find confusion. This movie comes at the end of 26 episode series that deeply examines the characters and their interactions. In the movie the first 22 or 23 episodes of the 26 episode saga is condensed into just over an hour of footage, the last hour of the film being an alternative ending to the last 3 or 4 episodes of the series. Let me say that I watched the entire series multiple times over the course of 2 years or so before this movie came out, I still don't understand everything that is going, and I don't expect I ever will. In class I stated that my biggest complaint with Evangelion is that the characters never seem to improve their character. They continue to make the same mistakes, even if they do end up doing good their characters stay as flawed as they ever were. They never seem to learn any lessons from their mistakes and to me over 26 episodes thats frustrating. Made all the more frustrating from the fact the characters are easy to empathize with. When you can understand Asuka its hard to watch her to continue to hurt herself by pushing people away. Same goes for the other characters, you wish them only the best knowing that they will never achieve it. When this movie came out, as well as the other 'The End'. I was elated at the idea of seeing these characters succeed in some way and better their lot in life. However the endings of both films were equally as troubling as the ending of the series and I am again left with a sense of being cheated out of my concern and time. But I can't complain, the mecha fights adequately make up for any discrepancies I may have with the Evangelion series.

Understanding Japanese ties to race and division of people by race
makes it easy to connect theories of race memory and a Jungian perspective
to their culture. As a nation brought together as descendents of the gods,
the Japanese continue to internally struggle with issues of power, family,
and tradition. However, one notion that remains an important part of
cultural and social understanding is the separation of the Japanese race
from the rest of the world. Even today, an attempt at becoming a citizen of
Japan as an immigrant is futile at best. The only set rule is that of blood
relation to another Japanese. But as our class learned from “Kamikaze
Taxi,” being a full-blooded Japanese raised outside of Japan hardly
passes societal acceptance.

A Jungian perspective of psychology explains much of this Japanese
understanding of mankind. “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” as part of the
mecha genre of anime, brings to life these psychoanalytic caricatures, as
well as a deeper analysis of psychological phenomena. A major difference
between Jung’s theories and Freud’s theories is the collective
unconscious. Although both believed in the psychoanalytic importance of
personality, Jung did not agree that all levels of the unconscious mind
could be explained through suppressed sexual inner conflicts. As explained
before, race memory is one of Jung’s elements. In fact, factors that
coincide with a Japanese understanding of mankind include religious and
mythological tradition and symbols.

An interesting way that some anime films, such as “Neon Genesis
Evangelion,” connect with these theories is through entertaining their
values and discussions. For example, religion plays a large part in the
film where we see the development of an adolescent with instinctual habits
into a conscious individual. As Jung describes the self conflict created at
the “psychic birth” of individuals, the mecha genre creates characters
that exemplify values of the collective unconscious. An example would be
the teenage heroes that struggle to save the human race. Mecha films tend
to create a relationship between man and some form of machine that becomes
a metaphor for these internal conflicts and the development of adolescents.

Even after doing the readings for this week, Evangelion was extremely difficult for me to understand without having seen any of the anime episodes. The first part of the film made heavy use of intertitles and flashbacks to provide some background information, but the sheer number of flashbacks rapidly shown one after another just made it all the more confusing for me. The film focuses on Shinji, the young, unwilling pilot of the Eva Unit 01. His lack of passion for battle makes Shinji an interesting character: he simply does what he is told. One battle scene shows Shinji chanting “position target in the center, pull the switch” as he fights an angel. Shinji also has issues with his father, who is much more passionate about the Evas than Shinji is. In the first part of the film, Shinji’s friend Toji takes over one of the Evas, and Shinji must battle him. He refuses to kill another human, but his father turns on the dummy control system and forces Shinji to kill him. Shinji’s other friend Kaoru turns out to be an angel, and Shinji is forced to destroy him as well. The first part of the film ends with that, and Shinji gives up on fighting altogether. All of the angels are destroyed, so the second part of the film is about a battle against some humans. The humans are trying to use the Evas to create a “third impact” (although I’m not sure what that even means.) Shinji’s role in this battle consists of him sitting head down with his arms around his knees as Misato yells at him: “like it or not, you’re still alive. Get moving and DO something! You can die later!” However, the film ends without Shinji doing anything. Asuka, who was for some reason unconscious, wakes up and pilots her Eva, destroying the attackers. Then the film ends. Maybe Neon Genesis Evangelion offers some interesting interpretations related to war or human psychology to fans of the series, but, unfortunately, I just spent the entire movie wondering what in the world was going on.

Evangelion is probably the only anime that I know of to put in this many religious references, sci-fi, psychological, apocalypse themed, dysfunctional, everything into one thing. I love the mecha battles in this anime yet the character development leaves a lot to be desired. None of the characters change from beginning to end, or if they do it is so small that it is not worth mentioning. Death and Rebirth was a really fast recap of the series, the series on the other hand progressed at a snails pace, making the viewer (me) really irritated at how slow the plot is moving. But once the plot is given you are like what just happened. Very much the same in Death and Rebirth, it was pretty much fast forwarded through the series, skipping out on details and much of the lamenting scenes of shinji. Though I loved the fight Asuka had with the Eva series it gets to a point where you are like serious? wont they just die already? I mean if SEELE had not taken so long to create something so indestructible these poor children would not have had to suffer through all this psychological stress and i the viewer would not have to had watched Shinji lament and whine about his father and nerv and his miserable little incomprehensible life. This is a psychological mecha anime bomb, prepare to be entirely confused when you watch it and when you do get a part of it, you'll be blown out of the water with another part and go what just happened. I have seen the series twice, not in a marathon viewing, but over the span of two years, and this would be my second time watching death and rebirth and the end of evangelion. Even then I still get blown out of the water by something i had not caught before. I didn't know that Evas 00 and 02 were cloned from adam while 01 was cloned from Lilith. I finally kind of understand what Kaoru, the fifth child was talking about in the dogma sector, and why they needed 01 for the third impact. Most of this film is left for the viewer to interpret, they give information but not enough to conclude anything, it is open to interpretation. It still is a good anime just very confusing.

After seeing Evangelion for the first time I have to admit that I was very confused with what the entire plotline of the story was. I was aware that this was a television show before they had made this into the movies but I was not aware that the movie was one of three different endings to the show. So as I was watching this for the first time I was very lost in the plot and the very entertaining EVA battles with the angels. It was not until I had completed the films for a second time and read up extensively on the subject of Evangelion and the psychoanalytical aspects of the characters and the story. The story is based around a young teen boy named Shinji who is enlisted by his father to pilot the giant experimental EVAs to help stop the “third impact” and the complete destruction of mankind as we know it. The EVAs are needed to combat the giant angels that have been coming down from space to reconnect with the first angel that fell to earth and almost causing mankind’s destruction during the “second impact”. By the time Shinji has become a pilot there are three different EVAs that are being used by Nerv to fight the angels. Each of the EVAs are piloted by special unique children that are able to bond mentally with the EVA. Unlike Gundam or other giant mecha anime, Evangelion has its pilots controlling living creatures not just machines. The armor that surrounds and protects the EVA is not just for defense but also as a way to control and dominate the EVA with the mind of the pilot. This film displays a lot of Jungian conflicts and psychology in it. The three pilot children could be said to represent each form of your consciousness. Rei would be considered to be the superego and represent the technology and man-made ideals. Asuka would be the id because her emotions are much rawer and based upon instinct and the subconscious. While Shinji would be the middle ground of the three. Shinji would represent the ego and consciousness of the id and the superego. Evangelion was a film that I originally did not really enjoy but with the more time and energy I spend on understanding what this film was actually about I find it to be much more engaging and enjoyable.

Evangelion was not an impressive piece. I have had the unfortunate experience of watching this piece and felt that I wanted the portion of my life back from watching this film. I felt as if there really wasn’t a point to the film. They fight, they get scared, they win by the skin of their teeth, and throughout the points where they are not fighting they become extremely reserved and are scared that they have to fight again. I enjoyed the Mech fights, but I need actual substance in the film in order to pull my interest. I understand the meaning of the “coming of age” that is going on in the film, but it seems as if they never grow up, and there is no development of the character. It’s as if they remain in the status quo of the their life, with no maturity. The only way to describe this series and movie is unacceptable and underdeveloped. There were elements that were good in the film, like the Mech fights, and the internal struggle of the characters during the fights, but not much else was worth talking about. I really have nothing much more I can write about this piece without it being completely negative.

When I was watching Neon Genesis Evangellion I noticed quite a lot of Christian Symbols in the movie. Such as the glowing crosses that appeared when everyone’s AT field was compromised and they kind of blew up, and the names Adam and Lilth, and the thirteen angels that apparently attacked the NERV base for some reason that was not fully explained in the movies. At this point I should admit that my exposer to neon genesis evangellion is rather limited. I have watched the end of it once before, and I remember thinking that it didn’t make much sense, but that was a long time ago and this time when I watched it I noticed that it rather made a lot of sense. Or rather parts of it made sense, but there were still holes in my knowledge. I know that the Christian symbolism come from that the movie takes place in a Christian cosmology, so that make sense there. The Christian symbols make sense now that I have seen that Jung advocated a return to the past religions as a way to progress forward. But how does the idea of moving back to the past religious symbols that define race make sense because the Japanese people didn’t have a long past history of Christianity. Perhaps they interpreted it as the racial memory of the entire humankind, which in a Christian cosmology would be that of Christianity.
There were a few pretty large points that I noticed in the movie that were pretty hard to miss. First of all it is even stated that the last greatest enemy is man. Even after NERV had fought off all of the angles it was attacked by humans. The other point that is openly states at one point is that humanity must be the only creature that can hate its own kind. The last one is a small point but I think it is important, it is shown by various scenes of the invading army coming in and killing those who were in the NERV complex indiscriminately.

One thing that I thought was really prominent in the Evangelion series was Shinji’s character complex. It’s apparent that he struggles with masculinity and femininity in terms of wanting to be accepted and have feelings reciprocated by a female figure. Beginning The End of Evangelion, Shinji seeks Asuka for help but unable to awake her, he is disgusted with himself for masturbating afterwards to her exposed body. Because of the absence mother-figure in his life, Shinji has looked to Misato for a possible feminine companion, you could say. Awkwardly, Shinji has accidentally discovered Misato doing ‘very grown up things’ and having sex. While all the audience sees is naked toes and Shinji, he is unable to move. Misato does not act or fit as a mother figure, but neither does she fit the role of a possible lover for young Shinji either. Meanwhile, Asuka challenges Shinji as the possibility of her being a girlfriend and returner of his feelings falls through. Shinji is left to grapple with the failure of another feminine rejection. Because he feels unwanted and unloved (not to mention his distant, ignorant father), Shinji is a non-reactant character during the SEELE attacks. He has pulled inside himself and basically has a breakdown in which Misato has to physically break him from. Although Asuka, his rejecter needs help, Shinji is unmotivated through fear of hurting others. Misato then gives Shinji a kiss (nearly tricking him into going) as she pushes him on the other side of the door and promises more grown up things upon Shinji’s return. Throughout the battles with the Evas and angels, the camera constantly flashes back to Misato’s necklace in Shinji’s hands which works as a constant reminder of this unattainable feminine acceptance. The cross necklace proves its importance because even though Shinji has the possibility with Rei/Lillith to create a world he likes, Shinji declines after realizing that humans cannot live along and need pain along with finding happiness. The film closes with an injured Asuka and Shinji on a beach with red waves. Shinji tries to strangle Asuka for the second time because she’s told him she hates him, but Shinji still can’t do it. She calls him disgusting, and the film ends with unanswered possibilities of what else has happened/are they the only ones left on the planet. And Shinji is still left unaccepted/unloved by the women in his life.

Having not seen this as a series might have made more sense (in terms of a deeper understanding, because it would have only been 30 minutes of digesting themes instead of trying to comprehend a full movie). I am also curious as to why they made it into movie format instead of just leaving it the way it was (maybe to reach an audience that didn't want to watch 30 episodes or something like that). It also should be noted that I watched the second film before watching the first one, if that makes a difference. A lot of what was in the second one was also in the first. This was actually the second anime film that I had ever seen, so naturally I was like whoa, all the themes and topics literally blew me away (which is probably the reason I’m not a huge fan other movies probably because they don't reach the complexity of this work).
The first scene of the movie where Akira masturbates over the young lady in a comma (I have forgotten her name at the moment) is in the beginning of both films. I am very intrigued as to why that was important enough to put that in both films. Possibly to show that he was still an adolescent or a very young immature/confused boy, that was supposed to be the savior for all of humanity, but he was still struggling with his sexual desires (and the onslaught of puberty).
The film has everything from the uncollective unconscious to the Jungian perspective (within psychology). It also touches on race memory, teen struggles, an apocalypse (which is interesting, because I have not sent the animated series, but the word apocalypse itself means “a great unveiling”, not the end of the world like Hollywood would have you believe. So I wonder if Akira found out anything about himself in this journey, or if anything became unveiled to him), sci-fi themes, and even the kabbalah. This film is good. I didn't even mind all the crying that Akira did.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Japanese title Shin Seiki Evangelion) is an anime television show that began in 1995. Eva was directed and written by Hideaki Anno, and produced by Gainax studios Japan. The plot of the anime takes place in 2015 AD, fifteen years after a catastrophic Second Impact event in the series which kills half of the human population and tilted its axis. Just as humanity finished its recovery from this disaster, Tokyo-3 began suffering attacks by strange monsters referred to as Angels; begins born from under the dark moon. Conventional weapons are useless against these Angels, and the only known defense against them are the biomechanical mechas created by the paramilitary organization NERV, the Evangelion (Evas). This similarity to post war Japan and the relation to how devastated they were after the Hiroshima bombing is uncanny. However this horrific event in the series can be related to any war event.
To begin, there is the matter of its name. Evangelion is Greek and translates into English as “gospel”. In Japanese, Shinseiki literally translates into English as “new century or new gospel.” However, when marketing it in the West, Gainax decided that Genesis might convey their concept better. They might have used “Neo Genesis Evangelion” but Gainax did not want fans to consider their series derivative of Akira‘s “Neo-Tokyo”# Thus, the idea behind the original title becomes a Gospel for a New Beginning, which implies a message about a new start. This new start however is the sub line plot of the whole series of Eva. Though stated above that a meteor was the cause of a god like figure. Man, or humankind for that matter, has reached its final level of evolution.. This peak of the evolutionary process has left open the decision of the next dominant species in a world, between that of the angels and humans.

One again, an awful lot to say and only a little space to say it. Oh well, I’ll do what I can and keep it brief. I really enjoyed watching anime when I was in middle school (though my exposure was pretty limited, less than a dozen movies and series) but now I really don't enjoy much of it; I suppose its part disliking the style and lack of movement/true animation in the cel-animating style most of them utilize, part cultural gap in the plot/narrative material. However, I LOVED End of Evangelion. I didn't understand it, of course, but I really enjoyed it! It was the deep exploration of the characters, I think. The drugged out, metaphysical, psychoanalytical hodgepodge that filled up the last half of the movie, combined with the wildly stylistic fight between Asuka and the mass-production evas (I know all of these terms now after studying the series for a couple hours after the movie was over). The animation was still a bit stagnant when compared to, say hand-drawn Disney animation, or computer generated 3D pixar-esque stuff, or even flash-generated animation, but it was still vibrant and eye-catching, especially that fight scene I mentioned. I love a stylistic thing that a lot of anime do (I’ve actually seen it in all of the few Gainax productions I’ve seen) in which to add intensity and movement to a fight scene, they shake the camera around a lot; this way even if the characters in the frame aren’t moving much, the scene still appears to be very vibrant. By watching modern American action cartoons, you can tell that a lot of inspiration has been drawn from sequences like this (I think the new Batman: Brave and the Bold series uses this same shaky camera technique, no to mention how heavy of an influence anime has had on stylistic elements of new American action cartoons like Avatar: The Last Airbender). I suppose it was the Evas themselves that really made this so cool as well; they are not part of those predefined “real mecha” or “super mecha” we discussed in class, but something new altogether. Its so original, so cool, and so chilling to see them go “berserk” or to see the organs underneath their armor plating. I liked how original it was; especially those fight scenes where there were no fancy space-age weapons or refined martial arts but a “barroom brawl” savage mentality (quoted standford.edu article)\. Now considering the ending, I found it hard to follow just like 99% of other people did, especially when they haven’t seen any of the TV series. Im thankful I watched Death/Rebirth just so I had at least a slight idea of what was going on (even though the rapid cutting and intertitles made all of “Death” feel like a bad mushroom trip or something). As Quintana noted, there is a heck of a lot of psychoanalytical stuff to draw from the whole series (probably exactly what Anno was going for), as all three of the kids separately represent Id, ego, or Superego. The most intriguing character to my opinion though, was Misato. She was so complex and so messed up; almost a nymphomaniac as she (apparently from what the EoE clips show in flashback) kept seemed to keep movign from man to man and was promiscuous as though she was afraid of being hurt by attachment, so continually dumped or stopped showing interest in the men in her life (with the exception of Shinji). Probably a result of, as Quintana notes “she hated her father fr leaving her mother, yet Misato saw her father in her first lover, Kaji. She broke up with him for that very reason.”

Yeah, there's a bit of a fork inside the road when individuals get productive in which they either go down the "modesty" route or even the "complete bugger" route. I'd say about 60 - 70 percent on the time they take the latter.

Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
