The Dutchman has been in hot form all season, and the goal was his 19th of the season, ESPN Soccernet reports.

The goal brought former Arsenal legends, who were in attendance to commemorate Arsenal's 125th anniversary, to their feet, according to the Telegraph.

The game brought Arsenal into the top four in the league for the first time all season.

Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's president, vowed to investigate parliamentary election results after widespread protests across the country against Vladimir Putin, the man in charge of the party that won 50 percent of the vote.

Up to 50,000 people protested in Moscow Saturday, according to the Guardian. The people were said to be disgusted, and accused Putin and his party of fraud.

The Telegraph reports that many people are frustrated because Medvedev's investigations have historically been ineffective.

Medvedev also took to Facebook to denounce the protest, a move that backfired, according to the Telegraph.

Captain of 1982 Brazil World Cup team dies

Brazil's captain during the 1982 World Cup, Socrates, died Sunday in Sao Paulo. He was 57.

Socrates had been in the hospital since Thursday with food poisoning, which developed into septic shock, according to the Guardian via O Estado.

As captain of the Brazil soccer team in the 1982 World Cup, Socrates dazzled with goals of great technical skill. The 1982 squad is commonly known as "the best team never to win a World Cup," the Telegraph reports.

Along with his soccer career, Socrates was also a qualified doctor. He took his exams during his playing days, the Guardian goes on to report.

The conservative People's party in Spain has won a landslide election over socialists in the country's general elections.

The victory included winning 186 of the 350 parliamentary seats and Mariano Rajoy becoming the new prime minister with a 16 percentage point win, according to The Guardian.

The People's party has inherited one of the shakiest economic situations in Europe, but The Telegraph reports that analysts have welcomed the election win as a good step for Spain.

The elections marked the first time in decades that Spanish voters weren't under threats of violence by the Basque separatist group Eta.


USA falls to France 1-0

The United States mens soccer team lost to France 1-0 to drop them to a record of 1-4-1 under the leadership of new coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

France was the dominant side, but didn't break the deadlock until Loic Remy scored in the 72nd minute, according to ESPN Soccernet. They outshot the United States 14-5.

The United States has struggled since Klinsmann took over the team, particularly in the scoring department, where they've been shut out four times in six games, the Associated Press via the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

One bright spot for the US team was the debut of Fabian Johnson, a promising German-born prospect who has chosen to represent the United States.

Mario Monti to help form new Italian government

Mario Monti, former EU commissioner, has been asked to establish a new Italian government.

The government is in need of an economic fix after Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister, was booed out of office for his failed economic policies, according to The Guardian.

Monti's appointment was well received by the nation of Italy, with 58 percent of those polled saying they have faith in the government under his control, The Telegraph reports.

The Telegraph goes on to say that despite Berlusconi's scandal-ridden administration, the 75-year-old said that he would make a return to the political world.

Greek government in limbo

Greek leaders have agreed to form a unity government before the country falls into bankruptcy.

Prime Minister George Papandreou agreed to step down as part of the deal, the Los Angeles Times reports.

European countries were concerned that Greece might have to leave the euro system of currency, which would then disallow a bailout for the country to kick in, according to the Telegraph.

Leaders were also putting pressure on Greece to establish a new government, but some felt that the action could have unintended consequences.

Arsenal beat rival Chelsea 5-3

Robin Van Persie, the captain of Arsenal, scored a hat-trick to help defeat London rival Chelsea Saturday.

Arsenal had tied up the match twice before two late Van Persie goals gave Arsenal a much needed win, 5-3.

ESPN Soccernet reports that John Terry, Chelsea's captain, had a miserable afternoon featuring a slip that allowed Van Persie to walk in on goal and score. This comes a week after Terry was accused of racially abusing a black player from Queens Park Rangers.

Arsenal have ascended to sixth place in the standings with the win, just three points behind Chelsea, according to The Hindu.

Syrian president issues warning to NATO

Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, warned NATO that any intervention in Syria could lead to "another Afghanistan."

The Guardian reports that though the country is drifting towards a civil war, NATO doesn't believe the "Libya template" would work in Syria because there is not widespread support for the protesters.

Opposition groups have claimed that Assad's warnings are meant to scare away any action that might be taken against his regime, according the The Telegraph.

Protests aren't limited to the opposition, as at least three cities have seen massive demonstrations inn favor of Assad, The Telegraph goes on to say.

Argentina president to be re-elected

Cristina Kirchner will become the first woman in Latin American to win re-election for the presidency after collecting around 55 percent of the vote in Argentina.

Kirchner has been popular during her term, and CNN.com reports that the economy in Argentina has experienced an 8 percent growth annually under her leadership.

The Guardian reports Kirchner's share of the votes will be the most in Argentina since democracy was restored in 1983.

Kirchner made a speech in August outlining strong economic growth and human rights advances as key to her future mandates.
