St. Paul woman acquitted in murder trial

A St. Paul woman was acquitted Saturday on charges of second-degree unintentional murder and charges of manslaughter for the death of her infant son.

Jessica Caldwell was accused of assaulting her son because he was "whiny," the prosecutor said in his closing arguments, according to the Star Tribune.

After two days of deliberation, the jury acquitted Caldwell.

Caldwell's boyfriend had earlier been charged with with one count of manslaughter in a separate case, the Pioneer Press reports.

Vikings fall short against Lions

The Vikings nearly staged a comeback against the Lions Sunday, before losing 34-28.

Despite four turnovers by rook quarterback Christian Ponder, the Vikings still had a chance to win in the dying seconds. Joe Webb, in for the benched Ponder, fumbled the ball to end the game, the Star Tribune reports.

The Lions' playoff hopes are in full swing with the win. With a record of 8-5, they are currently in the lead in the wild card standings, according to the Pioneer Press.

At 2-10, the Vikings at least kept hopes alive of having a top two draft pick.

Captain of 1982 Brazil World Cup team dies

Brazil's captain during the 1982 World Cup, Socrates, died Sunday in Sao Paulo. He was 57.

Socrates had been in the hospital since Thursday with food poisoning, which developed into septic shock, according to the Guardian via O Estado.

As captain of the Brazil soccer team in the 1982 World Cup, Socrates dazzled with goals of great technical skill. The 1982 squad is commonly known as "the best team never to win a World Cup," the Telegraph reports.

Along with his soccer career, Socrates was also a qualified doctor. He took his exams during his playing days, the Guardian goes on to report.

Late Ponder interception leads to Vikings loss

A late Christian Ponder interception led to a Vikings loss to the Broncos Sunday.

The rookie quarterback had been playing well up to that point, and set a Vikings rookie record for passing yards thrown in a game, according to the Pioneer Press.

The Vikings were ahead for most of the second half, but Tim Tebow, the Broncos quarterback, was able to keep his team in the game, according to the Star Tribune.

The Vikings lost despite recording 27 first downs to Denver's 13.

Sidney Crosby to return Monday

Sidney Crosby will make his first appearance of the season Monday after missing the last 61 games with concussion-like symptoms.

Crosby took head shots in consecutive games last season and has spent the last 10 months in recovery, according to ESPN.com via the Associated Press.

The USA Today reports that Crosby has been participating in contact practice since being cleared on Oct. 13.

Crosby's debut will come against the New York Islanders, and he is expected to get about 12 minutes on the ice.

USA falls to France 1-0

The United States mens soccer team lost to France 1-0 to drop them to a record of 1-4-1 under the leadership of new coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

France was the dominant side, but didn't break the deadlock until Loic Remy scored in the 72nd minute, according to ESPN Soccernet. They outshot the United States 14-5.

The United States has struggled since Klinsmann took over the team, particularly in the scoring department, where they've been shut out four times in six games, the Associated Press via the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

One bright spot for the US team was the debut of Fabian Johnson, a promising German-born prospect who has chosen to represent the United States.

Vikings stadium talk gets going

Mark Dayton is spearheading a plan for a special session for the legislature in January regarding a Vikings stadium deal.

GOP House Speaker Kurt Zellers has been one of the biggest opponents of the special session, saying that the stadium was not important enough for a special session, according to the Star Tribune.

Meanwhile, My Fox 9 reports that the Vikings have launched a new public relations campaign to raise support for the stadium. The ads will originally be online, with plans to expand them into print and television.

The Vikings have said that a new stadium would benefit the state, and that message is the primary focus of the campaign.

LSU downs Alabame in one versus two battle

Louisiana State (LSU) took down Alabama 9-6 in a battle between the top two teams in the college football rankings Saturday.

LSU, on the road, outlasted Alabama in overtime and won on a short field goal, according to the Associated Press via ESPN.com.

Field goals were an issue all night, as Alabama's two kickers combined to miss four in the game, the New York Times reports.

With the loss, Alabama only dropped to No. 3 in the rankings, and there is still a chance that they could make it to the title game for a rematch.

Arsenal beat rival Chelsea 5-3

Robin Van Persie, the captain of Arsenal, scored a hat-trick to help defeat London rival Chelsea Saturday.

Arsenal had tied up the match twice before two late Van Persie goals gave Arsenal a much needed win, 5-3.

ESPN Soccernet reports that John Terry, Chelsea's captain, had a miserable afternoon featuring a slip that allowed Van Persie to walk in on goal and score. This comes a week after Terry was accused of racially abusing a black player from Queens Park Rangers.

Arsenal have ascended to sixth place in the standings with the win, just three points behind Chelsea, according to The Hindu.
