Frets on Fire: Better than Guitar Hero? | Posted at 10:36 AM
Now, if there is one thing I am certainly a fan of, it is banging away on small plastic guitars to some of my favorite songs. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me out there in this respect.
That is why I need to share this with you:
What if you could get most of the songs you love that aren't on GH and play them? Well you can. All you need is a keyboard. Or, if you're like me, any 360 guitar controller.
It's called Frets on Fire and it's a free game that lets you play songs GH-style using your keyboard or any other input device.
As you can see, you can have a LOT of songs.
Here's a quick rundown of what you have to do:
- Download Frets on Fire.
- Download RF-Mod (version 4.15) for Frets on Fire. It has to overwrite your FoF folder.
- Install your USB 360 controller or use a keyboard.
- Obtain songs. These can be found on the web, in packs that be can be gotten from BitTorrent.
- Shred.
RF-Mod is a sweet, sweet mod that enhances the core functionality of FoF. Namely it installs a bunch of useful mods like the Guitar Hero Theme mod which I use, change the 5th fret color to orange, and some other graphical enhancements. The default themes are just ugly.
When installing my Harmonix Rock Band guitar, Windows XP detected it but still failed to install it. Apparently for most people using the Guitar Hero controllers it works fine but for me, it did not. This driver worked perfectly except that it's in French and I had no idea what was happening. After it installed though, it worked fine!
So my friends, happy shredding!

One day they will make a game that actually interfaces a proper guitar with the screen and allow somebody to learn guitar interactively. I have to confess, I find these kind of games a little short on actual training for guitar playing.

I must agree with some of the folks here: I wish more people spent their time playing the instrument rather than playing the game. Sure gaming is easier and cheaper (although I could disagree on that last statement), but guitar IS a game and the possibilities are endless unlike "Frets on fire"...

A friend of mine is a guitar teacher, and I asked him if he was disgusted by the popularity of guitar hero. He told me it's actually great for business- it sparks a lot of kids to learn the real thing. And they want to learn the classics, too - Beatles, Zepplin, Aerosmith.

I'm a guitarist and love to play a few different kind of genres on the guitar, but sometimes I really like to just get away from the real deal and do something different...
I have Frets On Fire and love to play it from time to time. It gives me the feeling of being an accomplished guitarist.
While I play on Frets on Fire, I learn to play the song on a real guitar.

As a actual guitar player I'm pleasantly surprised with all the positive comments here from real musicians. Like GH, I think this game is just one more way to interest youngests into wanting to learn to play an actual instrument. For me it's just a great diversion, and I don't have to hog the TV to play it.

Hi,
I agree with the last post while guitar hero is great and fun to play it really is not like playing the guitar at all. But I also have found that it may strike up an interest in learning the guitar. And that is a good thing. But like Larry said a lot of kids may have unbelievable potential that they are not harnessing.

I find it incredibly sad that kids invest so much time in playing these games. Of course, Guitar Hero is fun (and I must confess to spending hours glued to the Xbox myself), but if those same hours in front of the games console were spent on a real instrument, our kids would benefit in so many different ways.
As a guitarist who was introduced to the instrument at the age of 10, I feel I owe my parents a massive thanks for a passion that has been lifelong, and will continue to provide personal pleasure and the opportunity to meet and socialise with other people for the rest of my life. If you want to really open doors for your kids socially, invest in a guitar and some lessons - it really is worth it.

There’s a lot to be said about games that simulate playing a real guitar. The upside is that it encourages people who can’t play guitar to get something of the buzz that you get when you CAN play the guitar. This in turn will encourage them to learn guitar later. There’s an even bigger buzz to be had when you can play a real guitar in front of a real audience, and you can see them really enjoying the performance. Learn to play Rolling Stones songs first would be my advice – they really tick all the boxes! http://www.stonesmusic.co.uk

I haven't tried Frets on Fire, but it looks cool. Might try it....
Still, playing real instruments is so much more fun. Yes, the learning curve is a little higher if you've never played an instrument before, but here's the thing: Can you create new music with Frets on Fire or Guitar Hero? Didn't think so. Sell your console, buy a guitar. :)

I always wanted to play some kind of tool, but has never managed to learn something. I tried the keyboard again, but I think I was in the wrong category, as everyone seemed to know where they are going not only to me
