Tyson Motsinger/Nebraska Book Company Responds to Complaints [Update] | Posted at 10:19 AM
Please refer to my previous posts for information on Tyson Motsinger and the Nebraska Book Company:
- Seller Beware
- More about Tyson Motsinger/Nebraska Book Company
- Update on my Tyson Motsinger experience
Before I get to the response, I want to break down and answer some common questions and rumors.
Who is Tyson Motsinger?
He is the Marketplace Purchase Manager at Nebraska Book Company and oversees (or is at least involved) in the automatic purchasing that is being done at their company.
He is not a fake person, he is real.
What does he do?
Tyson himself does not purchase the books from sellers on Amazon or Half.com. He is merely the name the automatic purchase system uses (along with a few others, I believe).
Why did they request a refund?
It is most probably due to unclear or insincere descriptions on your listing, in addition to listing it under a different ISBN number.
How can I avoid problems?
Here’s how to avoid most of the headaches with Nebraska Books and other automatic purchasers:
- Always list your book under its correct ISBN. International editions should not be listed under the US edition. That is against Amazon policy.
- Always be accurate in your assessment of the book’s condition. Be honest so you have evidence if the buyer claims otherwise.
- Always ship with delivery confirmation and preferably delivery signature to verify your book was at least delivered.
- Never refund someone before you receive the book.
- Never pay someone for your book that they want to keep because it’s “damaged.”
There is also, supposedly, a way to opt out of Nebraska Book Company purchases. You should call (402) 237-TEXT (8398) for more information and for help on your order.
They canceled on me and are requesting a refund. Now what?
Contact the NBC at (402) 237-TEXT (8398) and Amazon Seller Support. Do not refund them without having them send the book back! Some people have commented that if you request them to send the book back, they will send it back.
Tyson Motsinger’s Response
I personally have not had a problem selling books to the NBC, however, many other people have. Here is Tyson’s response from his comment on my other post:
The author of this blog posted this above:"I think that problems arise when you send them a book that doesn't exactly match your description and condition and ISBN number. If you are accurate, I don't think you'll have any problems."
This couldn't be more true...
If you are listing a book on Amazon & Half under an *incorrect ISBN* (i.e. international, old or teachers editions - all of which are against Amazon & Half policy) or have not clearly disclosed damage to the book in your listing comments (yes, we analyze each comment), we may buy your book believing you will be sending the correct book or a non-damaged book. Obviously, if you send us an incorrect or damaged book (which are graded liberally - according to Amazon condition standards), it's not a book we want - so we'll ship it back to you and request you refund us once you receive it. We currently ship books back to sellers at our expense. All we need is a return address. Amazon does not provide us this address, but in some cases Half.com will.
Nebraska Book Company is purchasing books from a large number of sellers on Amazon & Half and, at the same time, working to provide a reasonable process for sellers to use when incorrect/damaged items are received (which currently represent around 2% of all books received). Unfortunately, some sellers list incorrectly and either don't understand what it means to "list a book on Amazon or Half under an incorrect ISBN" and accidentally list it or even intentionally list it because a more recent or US edition of the same title garners a higher price. Granted, in some cases a listing page is unavailable for a title, there are title data issues on the site or we'll incorrectly purchase, but each of these occurrences is extremely rare - especially for the types of books we are attempting to purchase.
Even with the volume, we've had good success with packages being delivered by the USPS. Sometimes we'll run into trouble with a few packages lost by the local USPS branch, but nothing close to unreasonable given the number of packages received. Some sellers rely on USPS tracking mechanisms. Amazon encourages sellers to fully understand the significant limitations of USPS "delivery confirmation." Read the last paragraph on this Amazon page to learn about these limitations:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200222890
If you are concerned about delivery, we'd suggest UPS or FedEx. Both provide tracking all the way to the point of delivery.
We currently provide dedicated staff who monitor our seller support line (402-237-TEXT), auto-responding email information, automated ways for sellers to block us from purchasing and a very easy-to-use (and free) process to request a damaged or incorrect book back. We continue to learn about the best way to help sellers while keeping our operations efficient. We have adjusted (and continue to adjust) our processes along the way, but the idea we're some big operation scamming marketplace sellers is simply not true.
Some of you reading this post will understand the situation and some of you won't - likely depending on a large number of factors. Either way, understand our goal is to have a successful transaction with marketplace sellers and to help sellers in the event a transaction is not successful - by both getting the incorrect/damaged merchandise sent back and helping educate why the product was rejected (providing specific damage information and/or the incorrect ISBN received). Purchase volume is certainly a factor, but we do our best to create tools which help us manage issues and allow sellers to self-serv in getting incorrect or damaged books returned.
We hope this sheds some light on the "mystery." Know that we do read your posts and will take constructive feedback into account.
Tyson Motsinger
Marketplace Purchase Manager
Nebraska Book Company, Inc.
(402) 237-TEXT (8398)
I am not taking sides on this issue. As someone who has not been bitten, I cannot directly complain about the company’s tactics. One thing is clear: people have been having trouble with this company. I have Tyson’s email address but I will not post it because I don’t have his permission to do so. If he chooses, he can post it in the comments.
If you do have problems, you should call that number. In addition, if you find out how to opt out, share the link with me so I can update all my posts. I did find some sort of opt out link but I can’t verify it works or how it exactly works.
To prevent problems, you should follow the guidelines I set out above. If you did and you still had problems, you may have grounds for action against the company and should contact Amazon Seller Support.

Why not just confirm shipment & not ship? If everyone does this then NBC will be so buried in A-Z claims it might force them to seek an alternate method of purchasing books. What I don't get is with the shipping cost on Amazon they could save time & money by purchasing new books from Ingram. It is obvious they are only purchasing on Amazon to file A-Z claims & resell the books themselves.

The reason that large used merch companies like NBC may seem like their cheating people is because they feel that the company is a smaller-time operation and individual books matter. That would be wrong. They own the most used textbooks in the entire U.S. This last season when I worked there, they easily shipped over a million books. Although they have many books, their checking and grading systems are very strict because of their picky *customers*. They are only doing this because they have to make sure that their *customers* want the books. They aren't crooks.
PS- timmy, they are a used book company, 80% of what their customers want is used.

I have written a book on writing a resume which has been on Amazon for a while. Not knowing how everything worked the 1st time around I have definitely been burned by giving refunds too soon! As I am sure almost all sellers do now do not ever ship without tracking ... its simply not worth it!

I know this specifically deals with Amazon and Half but sellers also need to be aware of these sites "pre-sale" guidelines as there can be some pretty harsh repercussions if sellers try to "pre sell" too early and dont meet timelines.

Authors of self-published e-books have the same exact goals. But how does a salesperson meet new prospects and contact them seven times, cost effectively? The options range from a combination of cold calls, follow up phone calls, faxes, yellow page ads, fliers, brochures, post cards, and other traditional methods of marketing. These methods all work, but they can be difficult, time consuming and expensive.

Any demands included in the letter should be reasonable and clearly stated. Since each situation is unique, there are no hard and fast rules as to what you should expect in the form of a resolution. It is usually safe to ask for whatever you think is fair. Asking for a full refund of the purchase price, plus a free trip to Maui, is a demand not likely to be met.

So in order to have availability in the stores, you must look at how your book is being distributed. Reviewing your distribution program is a must these days and taking action where necessary may be a factor in the life of your book. One area to definitely check on is to see if your books are returnable.

Some of us welcomed the opportunity while others shunned the book. Each of us who read the book was transformed into an individual marketing tool. Even those who chose not to read the small book filled with change embracing techniques became advertisers inadvertently. Simply by being exposed to the book on a corporate level had us all talking about the book and of course we took our conversations and reviews outside of our cubicles and work environment.

The best way to make dejected customers feel good is by listening to them. This shows that you care. Be friendly, polite, and helpful; and try your best to solve the problem. Tyson was very clear with his explanation of the issue. I saw a response that he posted to a rip-off claim on another site:
http://www.ripoffreport.com/book-stores/nebraska-book-compan/nebraska-book-company-refund-5264b.htm
At both the link provided and in his response above, Tyson unfortunately seems to be indicting the inteligence of the members of the marketplace. I uderstand his position, and agree with their general policy. However, he must recognize that the execution of the dispute process, on the part of his company has been poor. Additionally, he should be sympathetic of the fact that selling online can be confusing and initimidating to those who are doing it for the 1st time or have limited experience.

Their checking system must be strict since they dont want a ton of refunds.
I hope Tyson Motsinger responds correctly to all the complaints, since the way you run the business is as important as the business itself.

Problems like the customer support issues at Nebraska Book should be mitigated a little bit by transitioning to digital book downloads I would think. With the explosion of popularity of ebook readers that we saw in 2010 I would think that we would see some improvements.

Customer support, especially on online shopping networks like Amazon and eBay has been a point of contention more than an issue of late, so I totally agree and understand how annoying it is to have to deal with these situations.
I don't understand how some sellers who have this bad work ethic can live with the insane refund rates?! It's worse than scam offers on ClickBank.
Anyway, this was a good read. Thanks!

A lot of people don't understand that when you try to use social media to generate customers as so many companies are doing these days, you really have to make sure to produce top notch products and stay on top of every comment made. In social media every comment is open to be viewed by all your potential customers so when your product is great everyone will hear about that but if something gets messed up, everyone hears about that too.

Local internet marketing tips?
Since the housing bust and because most people were living beyond their means, moneys tight and it has changed the way they spend it. Because they are worried whether they’ll still have a job next week, if you haven’t lost it yet, people only seem to be spending money on necessities’. Because of this uncertainty and lack of spending, small local businesses are starting to disappear. What they need is to improve their local internet marketing to keep the doors open. Sure, if you’re a large company, you will be able to make it through times like this. But the heart of business, the small local businesses are finding it harder to keep the doors open. They just don’t have the resources to keep going without new business or losing some of the existing business they have.
So they must find a way to get the phone ringing. They advertise now but they are already spending as much as they can and it seems in the last few years the old local marketing methods are not working as well as they once did but the cost have gone up. Their ad in the phone book that use to be a ¼ page is now a small listing mainly because it was costing thousands of dollars a year and it hasn’t been cost effective. So they downsized their ad to save some of the marketing costs but this actually has an adverse effect and is making it even harder to get new business. Why? Because people using the phone book to find local businesses has dramatically decreased and this has effected both advertisers and potential customers.
First, for the advertisers, the cost has steadily increased so it’s become too expensive to pay for those big ads anymore. Smaller ads mean less visibility, less visibility means fewer people seeing your business, fewer people seeing your business means fewer potential new customers. Second, the internet has taken over local marketing. Every month thousands and thousands of people are getting online. In seconds anyone can search for whatever they are looking for even local businesses. And not just from a home computer. Many people have laptops that can be used at more and more places every month. Now you can stop at a café, be at a hotel or even at a fast food joint and have wireless access to the internet. Not to mention internet on your phone or other devices like I Pads.
And with local internet marketing services like Google “places” , “Google “maps” and Yahoo “local” , your business can be found 24/7, 7 days a week. There’s no more drudging through the phone book to find local businesses the might not even be in business any more. Why, because you pay for a whole year for an ad in the phone book and your information can not be changed. Let’s say you had to downsize and relocate your business to another address. Now no one will be able to find you because only your old info will be in the phone book. All you can do is spend more money you don’t have to place another ad. If you advertise on the internet any changes can be made and be seen in a few minutes so your information will always be up to date.
The phone books themselves know this that’s why they’ve decided to take their business online. As time goes on print copies of the phone book will be used less and less. This also applies the other forms of local marketing you might use. Newspapers? They have become even less effective than the phone book. Sales have been so bad they are almost giving the newspaper away. Every week I get a call from a local newspaper about their new lower price special 4 day, a week offer. Even the large ones are on the verge of going out of business. If they can afford it, they are going online because no one is buying the printed copy anymore. Now they’ll have their own “application” so everyone can read their favorite newspaper online
Local monthly papers and coupon books? Local monthly papers are extremely expensive and also on the decline. Coupon books are cheaper but your ad is stuffed in with maybe hundreds of other ads, randomly. (Not to effective) But the worst part is that they only distribute it once a month! That’s only 12 times a year; your ad will be in front of someone. Definitely, not the most effective local marketing you could pay for. Just ask yourself a question? Whens the last time you looked through a monthly paper or coupon book for a local business?
So the real local marketing answer for any business, no matter big or small is to have a presence in the local listing of the major search engines. Google and Yahoo are the most used search engines and Bing, is getting pretty popular too. Having your business listed on the first page of their local listings is without a doubt the most effective local marketing any business can do. The problem is, in order to take advantage of local internet marketing you must be listed on the first page.
Being listed on page 2 or higher could be the difference between getting the presence you need or just being another ad online. If you’re like me, when I search the internet, if I don’t find it on the first page, I usually change my search and search again. I rarely go to page 2 or higher. Just ask any business who has a first page listing now how dramatic the increase in the number of visitors they get to their web site is compared to being listed on page 2 or higher.
I know many businesses that went from averaging 25 to 100 clicks a month in local searches, to thousands of clicks a month just because they moved from another page to page 1! OK, The big question? How Do I get my business there? Well, there are many local SEO companies out there and most of the promise you first page listings in the major search engine. They usually try to include it in a big package of blogging, backlinks, and SEO for your web site in order to get your site to the first page in the top 10 listings. This can cost anywhere from $300 a month and up.
This is all good but this can be pretty costly and not necessary. Why? Well because for a “worldwide business” (one that sells a product or service worldwide or across the country) getting a first page, top 10 (generic) listing is needed to get business. Just like local internet marketing, most people chose a business or company from the first page. The difference is, if you do not ship a product, or provide a service “worldwide” you’re wasting your time and money for advertising. If you’re a local business, you only really need “local” marketing. What good does it do your business being listed on the first page of Google, if you’re a local “dry cleaner”, or “auto repair “business? Are you going to clean someone’s clothes, that live 3 states away from your business? NO, probably not.
Your biggest concern should be “local internet marketing”, so don’t worry about having your web site on the first page, just your listing. So if you decide to use a company to do your local marketing, ask them to provide just that. A good local internet marketing service should only run you a third or less of what they want for a “worldwide package”. You should be able to get top results in the local results for $100 or less a month. Much better, right?
But how do I choose a company to do my local internet marketing? Well, if you can find a marketing company that provides the things in the list below, then you will have your best chance at getting a top first page listing that can produce customers and not getting ripped off!
1. You should never spend more than $100 a month for local marketing. If they tell you that you need the $300 package to have first place local listings, their lying.
2. Make them give you examples of several clients who have first page local listing right now. Not old outdated or “once they were” there listings. The easiest way is to take their exmples and go to Goggle and search it. If you don’t see what they promise, don’t waste your time and money.
3. They should offer you a month by month contract. If they can really produce what they say they can then they should not want to “lock” you in to a year or longer contract. If they don’t offer a month by month contract, go somewhere else. Why should you have to pay for something that doesn’t work or you’re not happy with?
4. Make your input count! Don’t be told that “this is the best way to market your business” or what “search terms” are best for your business. They should be able to show what’s being searched on the internet for your business so you can decide which “search terms” you want to target. For example, if you’re a plumber in Palm Beach, then you should be listed for a “plumber in palm beach” not “plumbing repairs palm beach”. The search terms make all the difference! When I searched to see what was searched last month in Google “plumber in palm beach” had 1,900 local searches and “plumbing repairs palm beach” had 0! Which one would you target? If they can’t show you results about what terms to choose, and then go somewhere else!
If you follow these tips, you will be able to find local SEO companies that can help your business get the local web presence your business really needs!

When you are in the business of writing, distributing or promoting books it is important to have a marketing campaign in place that maximizes the opportunity to sell books. Unfortunately, not all promotions work out the way they are intended and some money is lost. But in the big picture, if you are doing enough profitable marketing, your successes will more than pay for the losses.

As a local internet marketing business owner, as long as there is communication between buyer and seller to resolve any issues, the business should be given time to correct the problem. The great news here is the owner is communicating. Criminals hide. Respectable owners value their integrity.

It's still somewhat of a Wild Wild West when it comes to book buying and selling online. Amazon obviously has raised the bar for sellers but I think a lot of buyers have a good experience with them and assume that other businesses will have the same standards but quickly learn about potential problems. I've been "planning" to write my book for 3 years! When I finally do release, I'll start with self-publishing so if it takes off and there's volume potential, I'll be able to afford to hire someone to help me out so I don't get burned by unscrupulous operators.

Without performing a full investigation, your company cannot know whether a complaint is legitimate or not. Therefore, every complaint must be researched thoroughly before you reach a conclusion about the situation. This process may take time.

I don't agree with the comment above. Yes customers are rude, but if you 'correct them' you'll more than likely lose a customer. In many cases customers have the right to be rude. You just need to listen to them and be reasonable.

Really, very useful information on how to increase traffic to a website through blogs.
But your comment should be relevant to the theme of the blog otherwise people will
not interested to read that comment. Blog is a good technique to share
information and to improve traffic of your website.

There are always two sides to every story. While the policies of NBC may not seem especially user-friendly, I'm sure that the policies are there because so many people just don't use common sense. Sad, but true. I agree though, that a company should always be upfront.

I havent had my baby yet, but when I do and decide its stim for formula, I plan to try Similac first. Its been around for a long time (its what I was fed as a baby) and I know where I live, its the most reasonably priced. Nothing will taste like breast milk as its not breast milk. Its just a matter of trying her on it and seeing how she does. Make sure to give it some time too as she might not adjust to it right away. And just get a small can until you see how she likes it. Good luck!

I think there are a lot of parallels in this grace + truth leadership equation
for me in my parenting. Once again, there are so many spill-overs between
work life and ministry and the wide world of mothering children. With too
much grace, our children grow up without a right sense of self and others;
the list goes on. Truth without ample doses of honest encouragement is hard
to hear and to learn from.

I feel that Leisure is very important in a person’s life to balance the damanding schedules we have….until this class I always felt guilty about leisure time and enjoying play. One reason for that is because my mom always stressed being serious as society often does also, but just knowing that we are entitled to that time to unwind and enjoy ourselves just makes me want to change my Major!!!

Werte Leserin, werter Leser,
