The University of Minnesota announced Wednesday that Richard Pitino will be the Gophers's new head basketball coach to replace Tubby Smith, the Star Tribune reported.
Pitino, 30, is the son of Louisville's coach Rick Pitino. He worked as an assistant coach at four other DI schools including working under his father at Louisville during the 2011-2012 season, according to the Pioneer Press.
He is the youngest to coach Minnesota basketball since the Gophers's first coach in 1897, the Star Tribune said,
He has gained a reputation as a tireless worker and and active recruiter which is what the university has been looking for, according to the Star Tribune.
