Project #1 "Stone Arch"
I chose the stone arch bridge because it is probably the place in Minneapolis that I visit the most, I walk my dog there frequently. It floored me how much sound I missed when I would go for walks. With the recorder in hand I picked up on so much of the conversation that was going on around me and the specific noises that existed in the background noise. In editing I did a lot of noise removal, it takes a lot to cut out the background noises that you don’t want to focus on. I also did a lot of fading and transition work to emphasize what I wanted heard. I wanted the experience to sound real and give you a real transition from the top of the stone arch to the bottom and show how the business of the city disappears to a natural haven inside the cities.

I really enjoyed this piece a great deal. It was very effective at producing a stark contrast between the hustle and bustle on the bridge and then the nature sounds that were just below the bridge like the geese. What I gained from this piece was the fact that there are tranquil even within a large metropolis. I believe that this contrast was the artist’s intent and if so it was very effective. The sound quality sounded very good. The voices of people on the bridge were clearly understood. The story about the birds at the end was a great thing to pick up. The sound of walking on the gravel had a great crispness to it that I really enjoyed. However, I would have ended the piece with the story of the birds. The “you are a creep comment is humorous, but it did not fit the rest of the piece.

I think you did a really good job in editing the piece in order to emphasize the sounds you wanted the audience to hear. In the same sense, I liked how you decided to use long continuous clips instead of short ones for all the sounds that were heard. I think it portrays the nature of the bridge as a long, winding structure. Also, I really enjoyed how you were able to capture parts of the different narratives from different groups of people. For example, the girl who sounded excited about something she saw, and the man at the end of the piece telling the story of an eagle. I also agree with the above comment where the end clip did not really add to the rest of the piece.

The contrast between being on top of the bridge and being below could have been re-enforce alittle more with multiple track editing, perhaps more sounds of people passing by on bike ( just a thought). the people on the bridge and the conversation were excellent compaired to the more subdued sound of being under the bridge. the descent to the bottom was made beleivable by the sound of foot steps on stairs; however, I think it could have been amplified a little more. there seemed to be a moment were nothing was happening except a goose honking, and that left me wanting to hear more of the subtle sounds of water or nature in general. the last "creep" was too much of an after thought and rough for me.

I feel as though I'm actually on the walk with you as I'm listening to this piece. It's put together very well. In the beginning it's put together in a way that makes it feel like a very busy day on this walk because of all the noise, which is very interesting. The transition is very progressive and feels quite natural. I like the calm, peaceful feeling that comes in the end. However, the peice naturally ended after the bird conversation and the last comment is a bit delayed for my liking. maybe if it was immediately after the the conversation it could flow better? I'm not sure, but I really did enjoy this piece.

I really enjoyed the feeling of being at the stone arch that you put into your piece. The rustling footsteps in the leaves gives it an autumn feel. The peaceful sound of nature as we breeze through this path makes the piece very realistic. I definitely enjoyed the geese honking because its such a unique sound but agree with others that more sounds could have been included to round out the project.
