Visiting artists

Nikki S Lee is a Korean photographer who visited the University in October of this year. She specializes in the influence of subcultures in our society and depicts them with photography. Ms. Lee lived in Korea until she was twenty four years old, she states that this is one of the greatest assets to her work. While living in Korea she did not see much variance and diversity in the people around her. When she moved to New York she saw so many people living differently and she found it interesting. She became the different sup cultures to better understand them. When she had emerged herself in every aspect of the culture she would start to document them with photography. Her complete emergence in the culture really allowed her to grasp the important facets of the group. In every photo she really looked like she belonged in the setting and attached herself to the people around her.

Mathew Coolidge is a photographer who is focuses on land art. To him the events of the United States have left many marks on it. Many of his photographs are of actual artist’s pieces where a landscape or large object was used as a medium. Other pieces were of industrial or human influenced land. The pieces showed how the people and economic situations of the area influenced the sight of the land. In many cases his peaces were not just captured on film but also he would set up tours or exhibits at the locations to encase the medium. His Greenland excursion captured the artifacts of the cold war and showed them in an almost documentary format, however it still showed through as art from the way it was shot.

Final project proposal

For the last project I plan on working with strictly sound. The sound mapping project was one of my favorites and its interesting how we can paint very vivid pictures of what we hear when we are presented with noise. I plan on making an additional insulation of sound mapping and plotting another point on our map. I have not found a specific location yet but I would like to find a location where there are many things that are not noticed in normal life that when built together paint a familiar picture. I plan on a five minute piece that will explore the diversity of the area.

Project 3 perposal

For the animation project I plan to personify an object that we tend to loose a lot, your keys. The shot will open with me getting home and set my keys on the counter where they will come to life and hide. Animating an inanimate object such as keys has always captivated me in how it makes our every day lives seem so like there is so much more behind it. The keys would scatter throughout the apartment and avoid me in many ways till I they finally find their way into my pocket and I leave the apartment.

Pranking Basics

This is a basic instructional video on pranking, enjoy.

Reflection on processing:
In retrospect I needed to spend a lot more time on my video then I did. Almost all of my clips had no lead or end time on them, which makes it very hard to edit. Small things such as timing and extra clips and takes make the editing process that much easer. I think that the program Final Cut Pro is very intuitive and easy to use. The fact that you can simply cut up any clip and drag it into a sequence makes it very easy to manipulate a video to the standards that you want.
The clips that I did have were not the best. I don’t know if it was my camera or me but the white balance I had set up looked terrible. The best way I found to fix this was to use the 3-way color correction. To me this filter was the most useful of all of them, it allowed for any clip to be completely rewhitebalanced and made any badly lit shot look decent.
I also had a hard time with transitions. The more transitions that are added the more cheesy the piece looked. However without transitions between most of my clips I found that they did not blend well into one another and the editing looked bad so I worked with the most basic transitions I could and the piece seemed to flow better.
Overall I am pretty pleased with my first video project and look forward to doing more advanced things.
