Search! We've received a number of questions about how to sort email by various criteria in GMail. For instance, many regularly sorted by person under Thunderbird. Sorting like Thunderbird is not possible in GMail, but GMail search is a very powerful tool and can give you very similar functionality.

When you begin to type someone's name it will search your personal address book and the U directory. This should work anywhere you lookup individuals from your contact list in Google including GMail and GCal.

By default it will open your local email client (ie. Thunderbird). While Thunderbird will send the message it will not save a sent mail copy in GMail. It is possible to set Firefox to use GMail as the default email client, so all messages go through GMail and get a copy saved.

  1. Open 'Firefox' and navigate to your GMail account (http://gmail.umn.edu)
  2. Login to GMail
  3. Copy and paste the code below into the Firefox address bar and hit enter

    4. javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/a/umn.edu/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")

  4. Click the 'Add Application' button the appears in the top right.

Now all email links should open in GMail.

Resources, such as conference rooms within Humphrey Center, are also solely scheduled through Google Calendar. Other colleges are transitioning to Google over the summer, so inter-unit scheduling should become much easier in the near future. Humphrey ITS recommends blocking others from scheduling you through UMCal to avoid the confusion of managing two calendars.

This change is transparent and will have no effect on your computer's files or settings. Your computer will remain exactly the same as it was before the switch. You only need to make this switch once per computer. The computer will remember 'AD' for all future logins after you successfully login.
