Hillary

I grew up in a fairly small, and in my opinion, overly-churched town 2 hours West of "the Cities". My first memory of any sort of sexual education was from when I was in the 3rd grade. All the boys got to have a second recess, while all of the girls were herded into the theatre to watch a movie about the female body. The only thing I remember specifically from the film was a scene of a mother making her daughter a pancake in the shape of a uterus, complete with two fallopian tubes and their accompanying ovaries. After giving each part a name and explaining it's various functions, they then proceeded to gobble the whole thing up. Weird.
Skip to 8th grade health class. This was the next and pretty much last time anything relating to sex was mentioned in my school. Had I not had any previous knowledge, I would have left the class at the end of the semester thinking that sex was the stuff of made-for-TV-movies, and it would either leave you pregnant with a child that would no doubt be the bane of the rest of your existance, or riddled with terminal diseases.
Being the youngest of a large family, and having siblings spaning every age from a brother who was 3 years older to a sister who was 13 when I was born, I pretty much knew everything there was to know about sex before the administration would see fit. So I would sit in class, make note of things they were leaving out or not explaining fully, and sort of laugh it off. I never stopped to think until now what the more sheltered kids in my class were thinking. It seemed to me that there was no where in my school that you could go to find real information about anything relating to sex. There was only Health class, where you were taught that remaining abstinent until marriage was the only way to have a healthy sexuality; or the ENABL (Education Now And Babies Later) club, which I admit I wasn't a member of. Having never gone to a meeting I can still safley guess that you wouldn't be able to find out much about contraceptives there, let alone sexuality.
Now as for the effect I feel this had on my fellow students...it obviously could have been better. The first time a girl got pregnant in my school I was in 6th grade, and so was she. After that it seemed like there was never a period when there wasn't someone pregnant. A few times there was a teenage mom-to-be in every grade at the high school. It just seemed like there was "something in the water" in our town...I mean, didn't they know about the options that were available to them? There is even a Planned Parenthood in our town. If they were lucky enough to "accidently" find out about such a place, and they were too shy or too embarassed or too something to make an appointment, don't you think they would have been less so if the possibility had been a topic of conversation in their sex ed. class, let alone even mentioned?
So I guess you can already assume my position on this topic. I believe that sex education should be completely dissected and presented from every angle to students. Everything from the obvious aspects of contraceptives and S.T.I.'s to homosexuality and gender issues. Maybe this is a little too much of a jump, or some of these topics seem irrelevant to younger students, but kids are developing and figuring out their sexuality, as well as acting on it, at a much younger age every day. To me, 4th grade is when kids should learn about their bodies and what they do in regards to sex. They should also learn about it together, and not be seperated by gender and be clueless as to what the opposite sex is all about. 6th grade seems like the ideal year to begin the more sexual education. Kids of that age seem old enough to listen to the information and actually learn something, as well as young enough to hopefully educate and prepare them before its "too late." Also, the chasm between grade school and jr. high/high school becomes glaringly clear during the summer before 7th grade. Kids should enter this new phase of their life with a full understanding of whats going on out there and whether or not they want to be involved.

Hillary, I'm also from a small, probably 'over-churched' town. I watched the same video where the mom pours the pancake batter into the shape of our organs. Hilarious. But, unfortunately that's what I think of when I remember my sex-ed. I really like what you guys are saying about starting sex ed earlier. I think it's really important, especially for kids whose parent's don't talk to them at home about it.

Posted by: Kelly McCarthy at February 16, 2005 4:49 PM

I can't believe the things you can "google" these days. My friends and I who have been out of high school for almost 10 years now, started talking about scarring experiences from our childhood (the 5 of us grew up together) and someone brought up the pancake video. We watched it our 5th grade year, too!! We thought it was just our weird Kentucky education system, but apparently others were forced to watch it as well. Anyway, we've been looking for a copy of it, just have for sentimental sake since it's the only thing we remember from 5th grade, but can't find it. We even emailed the Always Co. (they produced the video) but they didn't have it. So, our search continues. But good to know we weren't the only ones who witnessed when good breakfast food goes bad!

Posted by: Allyson at July 7, 2005 3:16 PM

My roommate and I are looking for the video too! We've searched on several engines and can't find it.

She said she saw it in a northwest suburb of Chicago around 1990. We can't believe that it got around the whole nation like that. My roommate is scarred. She still thinks falopian tubes would go well with syrup!

We're looking too. We'll let you know if we find anything. And do the same for us!

Sex education seems to be a sensitive subject. Effective communication skills must be practiced by parties involved. Students must listen well and must not be shy to ask questions to the teacher. It is for them to understand the subject very well.

Teachers must also explain the topics clearly and must welcome any questions from the students. Effective communication skills is necessary even in any other subjects. That is to avoid confusion and misunderstandings that may elicit negative outcomes.

Sex education is a good way to let teenagers understand the topic better than just hearing it from others. Its a formal way to educate them. Teachers though must have good interpersonal communication skill so that they could communicate the topic to the students effectively.

Since this is a sensitive topic, it is important that students and teachers communicate effectively. With their interpersonal communication skill, they can make themselves approachable for students to talk to them or ask questions about the topic without getting shy.

Sex education should really be given attention. Since it is a sensitive topic, the one teaching it should have great communication skills. It should not be miscommunicated to the young ones because it might even trigger their curiosity more.

Communication skills is important in both parties so that it will be taught and understood clearly. This is something that may affect their future and students must clarify things that they haven't understood or not clear to them.

You need to do a lot of exercise to accelerate your metabolism. It's better if you do cardiovascular exercise, because this kind of exercise helps you burn fat...

You should begin with a good eating plan, combining fats and sweets with fruits and vegetables. It will be better if you drink at least eight glasses of water daily to control your calories and your cholesterol.

If you want you can use some pills to control your weight and to accelerate the process of burning fat.

I know some pills which you can use to reduce your weight. Those pills are Xenical and Hoodia. Their results are excellent and fast.

Lotteries are most often run by or on behalf of national or local governments. There's never been a better time to play the lottery in a syndicate.

A lottery syndicate is simply a group of people who have pooled their lottery playing money to increase chances of winning the lottery. Winnings are shared equally between those in the syndicate.

In my views sex education is important for all of us.In the age of high school, every children see the changes in his body and have so many questions in his mind. But all the parents feel shame to tell him about those changes. So from the 10th standard , there should be a class for sex education.

In my opinion sex education should be given after highschool, otherwise students take some other means to know about it.

cales every time, as few have their own machines. Hence it is almost always a matter of guess-work whether or not the patient has actually lost weight and if so how much.

In my opinion, sex education is a must in every country. I mean, I love sex but when it goes in the wrong direction, it can become difficult.

I cannot believe I missed the pancake movie. I learned about sex in the 6th grade from this girl named Renee. Funny thing was that I thought she was making it all up because I had never heard those things from anyone I trusted. Probably still be in therapy if my parents had told me the same things. But I do agree that since sex is everywhere and the kids are no stranger to it, that the options and the consequences of being careless should be as openly discussed.

Posted by: Cellulite Cream Reviews at August 31, 2009 5:18 AM

While I chuckled about the pancake movie when reading your post, it is true that we need to ensure that the kids have all the information and not just the bits and pieces that everyone is comfortable talking about. There is no excuse for teen or pre-teen pregnancy or STDs. We have to educate our children in order to truly protect them.

LOL@the pancake movies. I actually went out and searched online for them. No luck yet but I'm not giving up. As a parent, I can think of nothing more uncomfortable than approaching my kids with "the talk", but interestingly enough, it was ok. We were a little uncomfortable at first, but the discussion was open and honest and I feel that they are much better able to make good decisions now. I cringe to think of what they may have learned from other kids if we had not stepped up - it's the parent's responsibility.

Well Hillary I agree with you...that sex education is obviously a very important and sensitive topic..It should be discussed in a right way...we as an adult should not feel shy while talking about it to our younger ones..

I think now the time has been changed. One must overcome his/her conservativeness and should came to know about the sex. It will be helpful if students are provided the sex education right form the childhood. Very nice post. Thanks for this.

I know most of the people are still conservative. But now the time has been changed. Children must be aware about sex. So sex education must be incorporated in schools right from the beginning.

well, i surely agree with hilarry, it's the parent's responsibility.

I agree.
It is very important to start with sex-ed at a younger age, mainly because I cannot stand seeing children having children!
It was tough growing up for me too especially since the way my mother was brought up, for her having 'the talk' with me was a nightmare.

Wow! I never heard of the pancake movie before. But - my mother - gave me a book about chickens - really - chickens - and walked away. That's all I had except what they taught in school. It would have helped to have started learning earlier. I agree with you. Thanks.

I couldnt agree more. We need to be transparent.

Posted by: Hudia at November 18, 2009 10:44 PM

Pancake movie was best ever! I agree with you, but at what age do you start this? Are "children" old enough to process this information and then make those decisions.

After trying with weight loss for a number of years, I am fully aware that not every weight loss program is worth the paper it is printed on. Having tried many of such programs and wasted hundreds of dollars, I came to the understanding that for some, this is just a business, a multi-billion dollar industry and a few are just in it to cash in. Some of these so-called "experts" have no clue and are merely out to enrich themselves. So for persons seeking to lose weight, exercise care before embracing some of the tips and suggestions being presented by these experts. A discovery that I made that has worked for me so far can be found at the website referenced here: http://www.fatguyeating.com/weight-loss-tips-and-tricks.

I believe that sex education is important and valuable to a point. However, having the tools and the knowhow without the moral and ethical knowledge to go with it leads to disastrous relationships. I personally don't want left to the chance that the sex education teacher has the morals and ethics I agree with.

Success of weight loss is to a very great extent a state of mind. By focusing on you weight loss or losing weight you bring your inner being's attention to "weight" which at best means you hang on to weight and at worst means gaining more weight. It is this state of mind that causes dieters to lose weight and then gain it right back at the end of the diet.

We need to refocus from, "I want to lose weight." to something like, "I want a strong, healthy body that is slender and energetic?" The former statement drives us to starving ourselves; an action that causes the body to try to hang on to the weight. The latter causes us to look to a diet of healthy food, to both aerobic and resistance exercising and in essence changing our life style is sustainable and thus has no boomerang effect of gaining the weight back. Though I talk about this in http://weightloss.willcjensen.com/309/how-much-weight-loss-is-realistic/#more-309
I confess to still posting articles focused on weight loss.
