Inspired by the description in chapter 5 (page 173) of Louisa Ball and her Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS), I perused the internet looking for other interesting sleep disorders. What I found, quite by surprise, was something called Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) the I believe many of the women in my family, including myself, suffer from.

The symptoms of this disorder are sudden involuntary movements of limbs, especially a kicking of the legs, during sleep. Women in my family have been scaring their husbands in the middle of the night with these little spasms for generations.
Similar to and sometimes confused with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) due to the movement of the legs and that it can be exacerbated by the consumption of caffeine, PLMD differs from RLS in that it occurs during sleep (not while trying to fall asleep), it is involuntary, and it may be linked to instances of Parkinson's disease, heart disease, narcolepsy, cataplexy, and a number of other disorders. PLMD is also linked to stress.
While the women in my family don't suffer from the more serious diseases and disorders sometimes associated with PLMD, we do tend to consume a great deal of coffee and other caffeinated beverages and we are prone to stress.
The women in my family are also lucky enough not to suffer very severe instances of leg jerks, most of the time sleeping through the spasms. For those with more serious cases, medication used to treat Parkinson's disease as well as those which treat RLS can be effective. It is also advised that caffeine and alcohol should be avoided. As for my treatment options, a husband who is a heavy sleeper would do the trick.
