[I wrote this yesterday, but didn't have access to the internet on a computer until today.]
We were given the entire day off today to explore Wellington, and, for the most part, each of us split up to explore the city. My day started at 6:00 AM. With the day off, there was no way I was missing the White Sox game. Luckily, it occured during the middle of the day. While everyone slept, I was watching the White Sox beat the Mariners; the day got off to a great start before I even got out of bed. After everyone got ready, a few us headed out to breakfast before going our separate ways. Jenny and I went to the Information Site to book our hop on, hop off tour. We waited there for 40 minutes for our bus to come and then headed up to the Carter Observatory. The view of the city and the water from up near the observatory was gorgeous. We walked around the observatory, looking at the exhibits, before watching a show in the planetarium about the weather on other planets. After the show, the dome was transformed to emulate the night sky, and we learned how to identify our location at night in the Southern Hemisphere.
I walked around the observatory for a few minutes after the show and then ran into Mona, who was headed into the observatory. I briefly looked around the Cable Car Museum before Jenny and I were picked up again by our bus. Our bus driver was niceenough to let us stop at Old St. Paul's, a church, to have a look around. We also stopped briefly outside the Parliament Buildings. I'm hoping to go visit the Parliament Buildings and take a tour sometime later in the week. We were then dropped back off at the Wellington City and Sea Museum, where we parted ways. I went to the Olympic Museum, which was adjacent to the City and Sea Museum, and ran into Luke. The museum was quaint, but I liked it. I stopped for lunch and then took a half hour walk back to the hostel along the water, stopping at the grocery store to pick up Mac's Sour Apple Fruit Drink, which I am now officially obsessed with. I then headed back to the backpackers, intending to work on my digitial story...but that didn't really happen. Later on, while everyone else went to dinner, Joelle and I went for a walk around our backpackers, which was pretty fun.
I'm glad that we had a whole day off to explore Wellington; there is so much to see and not enough time in the day, but at least I'm happy that I was at least able to get a taste of the city.
