Prostitution in India Increases

According BBC News, the number of prostitutes in India has risen by 50% in less than a decade according to a new survey.

Many underage prostitutes in India enter the sex trade industry between the ages of 12 and 15.

A study done by the Government Commission said that two million sex workers in 1997 has risen to 3 million by 2003-2004.

BBC also reports that the study conducted by the NGO interviewed a dramatic 9,500 prostitutes in 31 countries. Of these prostitutes the majority were poor and illiterate.

Over the past seven years, prostitution has even transistioned to the internet .

The Times of India reports that , on Tuesday Police busted a national level online prostitution network.

The police found the pimp who was one of the main players in the internet prostitution scandal and arrested him .

Fortunately, the police were able to rescue a few of the women being held under the pimps control.

"The pimp allowed his customers take the girls out, and asked them to treat the women like their wives," assistant deputy commissioner of suburban police S Jayakumar said. He charged `15,000 for a day. The girls worked for a monthly salary, reports The Times of India.
