April 21 - Service Learning

This week was pretty low key. A pair from St. Paul District Energy came by for a little presentation for the class followed by a game for them to play afterwards.

It's always amazing to see how much is actually being understood by the kids considering the level of chaos and distraction that always seems to be present!
I definitely enjoy seeing schools in the Twin Cities being able to utilize the nearby resources such as representatives of District Energy as elements in the teaching curriculum. It's certainly not an ammenity that every community has access to and it's great that ACES is able to take full advantage.

Service Learning account for April 16

This week was really fun and interesting.

This week I got the chance to work pretty directly with one of the kids. He really seems to enjoy his time with the program as well as getting to know the volunteers.
The activity of the week was applying some direct learning to some subject matter they had been learning on previous days. We wound up having to disect OWL pellets. Yep. OWL pellets. Let's just say that I expected something much worse than what they ended up being. I guess thats what I get for not having paid attention in my own science classes while growing up!
Towards the end of the class period we had an intruder drill. This is a process in which everyone sits quietly in a spot away from doors and windows with the door locked and lights turned off. The purpose behind this is around the idea of a dangerous intruder walking the halls and to ensure safety, the classroom needs to be locked and appear empty.
They all did great and hopefully in the future this is a type of drill that can be left to old memories.

Week 3

This is the account for Monday, March 3.

Well, I remembered my nametag button this week. The girls didn't forget though and for a while kept referring to me as "Volunteer"! haha

This week was pretty low-key. I started out with one group and at some point was asked by Chad, the site leader for ACES, to help out another team lead who was having some issues trying to keep the kids on task.

For the first half I got to help out a girl with her fractions which proved to be a bit harder than I expected. It certainly wasn't that she didn't follow the concept but she was having a tough time remembering to work things through thoroughly so we tried working on breaking the process down into it's individual steps. I hope it helped. What I do know is that when she stayed focused, she was able to work through the problems without skipping things. It was at that time that I was pulled out for the other room.

George, a team leader, was trying to keep the kids focused on their ACES curriculum at the time. They were going over nutrition information such as calorie intake and food groups. Oddly enough the kids didn't seem to enthusiastic about the whole thing! After time we started to get them involved by asking them about the foods they had just eaten that day and helping them translate that into what they were looking at regarding the food charts. Some of the kids were pretty surprised to see what their favorite foods represented in terms of daily caloric intake....but most of them were not! It's a tough subject though so what do you expect.

Week 2

Without a doubt this category has suffered neglect.

It is April 16th but I am recounting for my volunteering time of Monday, February 18th.

I had forgotten my ACES nametag button this week and was sent out badged with the name "Volunteer". It almost goes without saying that I received a fair amount of crap from the kids that day! This week was certainly more productive than the last. After the girls settled down I wound up spending a lot of time with one in particular. It was fun because instead of a scenerio that had me sitting down and going over homework, instead she and I ere up at the blackboard so she could "teach" me her new multiplication problems. (The cool thing was that I actually had never seen this particular table method of solving multiplication problems!) I think she really enjoyed the fact that she able to show me something new like that.
