Service Learning account for April 16
This week was really fun and interesting.
This week I got the chance to work pretty directly with one of the kids. He really seems to enjoy his time with the program as well as getting to know the volunteers.
The activity of the week was applying some direct learning to some subject matter they had been learning on previous days. We wound up having to disect OWL pellets. Yep. OWL pellets. Let's just say that I expected something much worse than what they ended up being. I guess thats what I get for not having paid attention in my own science classes while growing up!
Towards the end of the class period we had an intruder drill. This is a process in which everyone sits quietly in a spot away from doors and windows with the door locked and lights turned off. The purpose behind this is around the idea of a dangerous intruder walking the halls and to ensure safety, the classroom needs to be locked and appear empty.
They all did great and hopefully in the future this is a type of drill that can be left to old memories.
