Hi All,
This week we (Emily and I) will be reviewing the Emergency Procedures with everyone!
Melissa
Did you know you could "feed the blog" (otherwise known as posting to the blog)? You can! I'd like to encourage all of you use this as a forum for communication among yourselves, so to that end... I'm assigning it! (M'wah, hah, hah! The power is going to my head!)
Here's all you need to do:
So what kinds of things should you post? How 'bout updating people that you need shifts covered? Are there things that you've noticed people are forgetting to do at the desk? Do you have any ideas that would make you job easier? Get creative and get posting! I'm looking forward to what you have to say. :)
Thanks,
Emily
Hi All,
I have scheduled *2 Mandatory *Ref training classes with Del.

These will be paid!
Pick one day to attend
Dates: Monday March 30 at 3-4pm
Thursday April 2 at 330-430
Please let me know what time you are signing up for.
Thanks,
Melissa
Hi everybody,
Since Finals are upon us and the library has been busy with studying students, it's time for a reminder about appropriate behavior at the desk. This information is in the Student Handbook that you signed when you were hired.
Appropriate:
Studying
Reading
Email
Web surfing
Inappropriate:
Watching video, with or without sound
Chat
Gaming (puzzle games like those you'd find in the Daily are fine)
If you have questions or concerns, please let us know; otherwise, post your initials to the blog so that we know you've read this post.
Thanks,
Emily

The entire University will soon be using Microsoft's Active Directory for networking and authentication purposes. What this means for you is that soon all of our computers (excluding the Macs) will require currently-affiliated U of MN students, staff and faculty to activate Active Directory in their online account in order to log onto a computer. (You may want to get a jump on things and do this for yourself, as well.) We will have guest accounts for unaffiliated users to use when the time comes. For now, computers on the 3rd and 4th floors are the only ones that require Active Directory authentication. The rest of the PCs will follow, post-construction (mid-August).
I will have instructions at both desks. You can also access instructions here and in the Student Worker Guide.
Please post a comment with your initials to indicate you've read the post.
Thanks,
Emily
How to use the Public Scanner...
1. Make sure the scanner is on. There should be be a '01' in the readout window. If it is not on, press the power button on the far left of the front panel.
2. Launch Adobe Photoshop via shortcut on the desktop.
3. Place your item for scanning face-down in the scanner. You will be given a preview of the image, so you can adjust the positioning of the item to be scanned if necessary.
4. In Adobe Photoshop, go File->Import->HP Scanjet 4500c/5550c (the first option).
5. Item will scan and a new window will pop up. Beneath and near the right-hand corner of the scanned image there will be two buttons: Preview and Accept. Preview will take a new picture over the one you already have. Accept will scan the image into Photoshop, at which point it can be saved (File-Save As) several different file types (see File Type drop-down).
-Remember to tell the person scanning that if they save something to the computer to go in and delete out when they are done and delete from the Trash can also.
Everyone must send me a copy (just cut and paste) that they have completed their U of MN Privacy and Security Training. Do this ASAP!!! IF you have not completed it you MUST do it this week.
Please post your name that you have read this and sent it to me.
If you have any questions please see me or David or Steve.
Thanks,
Melissa
ps...read about the shifting below and post to this blog and include 'read shifting blog'.
| Did you know that you can attend some library workshops on library time? |
If you haven't done so already, here's one to check out: RefWorks will help you organize your citations, insert them correctly into papers and format perfect bibliographies. It will save you from hours and hours of grief while you try to figure out how to cite a website in MLA or a personal communication in APA!
Upcoming Classes at Bio-Med
Literature Search Techniques and RefWorks
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM, Mon February 25, 2008
RefWorks Basics
12:30 PM - 2:00 PM, Thu February 21, 2008
Additional RefWorks classes are held in other libraries. To get work credit (i.e. $s) for attending, get permission prior to attending from Melissa, David or Emily and then show one of us a copy of the handout from the class you attend.
Cheers,
Emily
