Renewing and Recalling Library Materials

Do you need to renew an item that you have checked out? Or do you want to recall a book that is currently checked out to another patron? If so, you have several options to meet your needs.

Bio-Medical Library materials may be renewed in several ways. You may renew by phone by calling 612-626-5653. You may also renew by e-mail (, in-person at a circulation desk, by fax (612-626-2545), or by mail (Circulation, Bio-Medical Library, 505 Essex Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455). Additionally, you may renew items using the “Your Account” feature available through the library’s catalog (, or the online renewal form ( You are responsible for knowing the new due date for renewed material.

We encourage you to request renewals before the item’s due date to avoid fines. Some items may not be able to be renewed, so allowing a little extra time before the due date will make it easier for you to return the material on time.

If library material that you need is checked out to another patron, you may request that the material be recalled for your use. Recalls may be placed by patrons with a valid University of Minnesota identification card (U Card). Items may be recalled immediately if requested for course reserve, or after two weeks if requested by another library patron. Recall due dates supercede all previous due dates, and higher fines are assessed on items that have been recalled.

Several options are available if you wish to recall an item that is currently checked out from the Bio-Medical Library. You may recall by phone (612-626-5653) or complete the online recall form ( You may also recall items using the “Your Account” feature available through the library’s catalog (

When the item that you have recalled is returned, it will be held at the Circulation Desk on the third level of the Bio-Medical Library and you will be notified that it is available for your use. If eligible, you may use Point to Point ( or LUMINA to U ( to have the book delivered to you or to another library on campus. Please link to the Web pages for those services for more information about eligibility, turnaround time, and fees.
