Have you written a manuscript that resulted from NIH funding? Has it been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication in a journal? If so, you should be aware of the NIH Public Access Policy, which went into effect May 2, 2005.

The NIH Public Access Policy requests its investigators to submit to the National Library of Medicine's (PubMed Central) an electronic version of that final manuscript, including all modifications from the peer review process, upon acceptance for publication. A separate submission is not necessary if a manuscript has been accepted by a PubMed Central journal that permits free access within 12 months of publication. (Please refer to this list of these PMC journals.) The policy does not apply to book chapters, letters to the editor, reviews, or editorials. This submission fulfills grant progress reporting requirements by substituting deposit for submission of paper copies of articles.

NIH strongly encourages public release in PubMed Central immediately after the final date of journal publication, but PIs have the option to release their manuscripts at a later time, up to 12 months after publication. You will need to clarify this with your journal publisher. Many publishers are working to revise their author agreement forms to make this more evident. This NIH policy does not change the ability of either the author or the publisher to assert copyright.

NIH has provided the secure NIHMS web site for depositing the manuscripts. The site includes information about the policy and the process. Manuscript files can be uploaded to the system by the PI, or with the author's permission, by a 3rd party designee (such as administrative personnel, librarians, or publishers). To submit a manuscript, no further formatting is necessary beyond that required by the accepting journals. The submission process requires an account for the PI on the NIH eRA Commons or MyNCBI for other designated submitters. Step by step submission instructions have been provided by NIH.

You are encouraged to contact us with your questions and concerns as we work together through the issues of policy implementation. If you have questions about the policy or process, please contact Linda Watson (lwatson@umn.edu), Lisa McGuire (lmcguire@umn.edu) or Kevin Messner (messn006@umn.edu).

The Bio-Medical Library is pleased to announce the hiring of our newest reference and instruction librarian, Liz Fine. Liz received her Masters degree in Library and Information Science from the College of St. Catherine/Dominican University in May of 2005. She started working as a librarian on July 1, 2005.

While Liz is new to the library as a librarian she is not new to the staff. She started working at the Bio-Medical Library in September of 2001 for the Biomedical Information Service (BIS) as a Library Assistant II. Liz had a variety of job responsibilities when working for BIS. She supervised student employees, helped keep the document delivery service running smoothly and worked on citation clarification.

Eventually she started working at the Reference Desk, worked chat reference shifts, attended an occasional Morning Report and started doing bibliographic database searches, primarily on MEDLINE, for BIS. In April of 2005 she took over sole responsibility for conducting literature searches for BIS. She has also served on the Bio-Medical Library's website design committee and the Biomed Improving Public Service (BIPS) committee.

Liz's current responsibilities include transitioning to the role of liaison to the School of Nursing, staffing the Reference Desk, teaching classes on database searching and electronic resources, and conducting Reference Consultations with clients, particularly for the School of Nursing. She also continues to maintain her responsibility for BIS literature searches.

Liz is interested in exploring electronic tools such as virtual office hours that enhance communication options for distance learning and has a general interest in the issue of scholarly communication. She's looking forward to developing new ways to liaison with the School of Nursing such as making house calls to offices and classes and having a Satellite Reference Desk near the Outside-In or the CHIP student center over the lunch hour.

Liz was born in Rhode Island and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from Colby College in Maine. Liz moved to Minnesota because her now-husband Jared was attending Graduate School in Fisheries at the University of Minnesota. He is in the process of finishing up his doctoral dissertation on the sea lamprey, a parasitic exotic fish in the Great Lakes. While Liz and Jared are "east coast kids" they love living in Minnesota. Says Liz, "We even say pop instead of soda now without thinking about it, but I still love the New England Patriots." When you see how many times the Patriots have won the Super Bowl compared to how many times the Minnesota Vikings have, it is not hard to see why Liz maintains her loyalty!

OVID Technologies (MEDLINE, CINAHL, etc.) released a major change to its search interface on Tuesday, July 12th. The basic search functions of the database remain the same, but Ovid has updated its look and usability.

Classic features such as “Explode”, “Focus” and “Scope Note” are carried over, along with some lesser known tools such as the “Contexts” button. This button appears on the subject heading “Tree” page and when clicked, displays all instances of any term within the taxonomy. Convenient “U of MN Find-It” buttons link to full text options and MNCat holdings.

In addition, the new interface offers some new functions:

• "Find Similar" - a feature similar to Pubmed's "Related Article" link
• "Find Citation" - a feature similar to Pubmed's "Single Citation Matcher"
• "Find Citing Articles" - a feature that links to the full text of citing articles. Please note: Ovid's "Find Citing Articles" only links to articles from journals that are available through Journals@Ovid. For more comprehensive citation searching, use ISI's Web of Science available through the http://www.biomed.lib.umn.edu/bms.html page under “W.”

Your web browser version may need upgrading to support forthcoming new features on Ovid. For best results, we recommend the following minimum browser versions:

• Internet Explorer 6.x and above - IE 5.x in not supported for Macs
• Netscape 6.x and above

If you have difficulties with the new Ovid interface over the next few weeks, please report your problems to medref@umn.edu (our email reference service), or call the Reference Desk at 612-626-3260.

Ms. Watson comes to this position from the University of Virginia, where since 1990 she has been the Associate Dean and Director of the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library in Charlottesville. Prior to her work in Virginia, Ms. Watson has also served in management positions at the Houston Academy of Medicine/Texas Medical Center Library and at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.

Ms. Watson’s record of professional service includes chairing the committee on scholarly communication for the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, and service on the PubMed Central National Advisory Committee. She is also a recent former president of the Medical Library Association.

She publishes and presents on a wide variety of topics including scholarly communication, open access publishing, and library outreach projects that enhance access to health information.

The Real Diehl posed some questions to Ms. Watson about her new position:

What inspired you to apply for the position?

“The broad scope and potential of the position attracted me right away. And during every interview with AHC leadership, I found an eagerness to engage the Health Sciences Libraries in strategic thinking – about curriculum and physical spaces to name just two important issues. It seemed to be a very collaborative and energetic environment where new and innovative ideas can thrive.”

What do you hope to accomplish in your first twelve months on the job?

“In my first twelve months, I expect to spend time learning from library staff of course, and interacting with all the health professions represented both in Twin Cities and throughout the state where students train to get a sense of how we can help them achieve their short and long term goals. I'd like to position staff as essential partners (and leaders) in curriculum enhancement, knowledge discovery and knowledge management, evidence-based patient care, and community outreach.”

Can you outline some future challenges for academic health sciences libraries?

“There are a number of grand challenges for the profession of librarianship as well as the health professions. I anticipate working with colleagues throughout the University Libraries system to develop new ways to harness information technologies which support scholarly work, and to influence new models of scientific publication. What will the library of the future look like? It's for us to help invent that future. I also see much potential in the University's growing partnerships with the Mayo Clinic, including a medical informatics training grant from the National Library of Medicine.”

Any other thoughts about moving to Minnesota after living in Virginia for 15 years?

“My husband and I are looking forward to exploring a new part of the country. And we are both huge sports fans, so are anticipating lots of outings to Big 10 and professional events. I love the outdoors, so finding a home right next to a trail head makes my dog and me very happy!”

The popular public health literature database "Global Health" from CABI Publishing is now available to U of M users. The University Libraries have begun a subscription to CAB Direct (aka CAB Abstracts), a multi-disciplinary agriculture, biology, and environmental science literature database. All citations indexed in "Global Health" are part of the CAB Direct database. Within CAB Direct, search within the "Human Health: Public Health" and/or "Animal Sciences: Public Health" subject subsets. These subsets can be selected on the main search page, on the left side of the page.

From the CABI Publishing description of Global Health:

"Global Health is the definitive international public health database for academics, researchers, NGOs, policy makers, clinicians, healthcare professionals and students."

"This bibliographic database is well placed to fill many of the gaps in your existing human health research resources. It can provide you with:

        * Over 900,000 records, 95% of which contain informative abstracts
* 50,000 records selected, abstracted and classified by subject specialists every year
* Information from more than 3500 serials, books, book chapters, conference proceedings, patents, theses, electronic only publications and other difficult-to-obtain sources from more than 125 countries
* Global coverage of both the developing and developed world with over 50 languages translated into English
* Information of which 40% is unique to Global Health"

AnimalScience.com searches essentially the same information set as VetCD + BeastCD, but is a more user-friendly search environment for the average user.
Do you need to renew an item that you have checked out? Or do you want to recall a book that is currently checked out to another patron? If so, you have several options to meet your needs.

Renewals

Bio-Medical Library materials may be renewed in several ways. You may renew by phone by calling 612-626-5653. You may also renew by e-mail (biomcirc@umn.edu), in-person at a circulation desk, by fax (612-626-2545), or by mail (Circulation, Bio-Medical Library, 505 Essex Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455). Additionally, you may renew items using the “Your Account” feature available through the library’s catalog (http://mncat.lib.umn.edu), or the online renewal form (http://www.biomed.lib.umn.edu/accs/circrenewfm.html). You are responsible for knowing the new due date for renewed material.

We encourage you to request renewals before the item’s due date to avoid fines. Some items may not be able to be renewed, so allowing a little extra time before the due date will make it easier for you to return the material on time.

Recalls

If library material that you need is checked out to another patron, you may request that the material be recalled for your use. Recalls may be placed by patrons with a valid University of Minnesota identification card (U Card). Items may be recalled immediately if requested for course reserve, or after two weeks if requested by another library patron. Recall due dates supercede all previous due dates, and higher fines are assessed on items that have been recalled.

Several options are available if you wish to recall an item that is currently checked out from the Bio-Medical Library. You may recall by phone (612-626-5653) or complete the online recall form (http://www.biomed.lib.umn.edu/accs/circrecallfm.html). You may also recall items using the “Your Account” feature available through the library’s catalog (http://mncat.lib.umn.edu).

When the item that you have recalled is returned, it will be held at the Circulation Desk on the third level of the Bio-Medical Library and you will be notified that it is available for your use. If eligible, you may use Point to Point (https://www.lib.umn.edu/ordering/p2p.phtml) or LUMINA to U (https://www.lib.umn.edu/ordering/lumina.phtml) to have the book delivered to you or to another library on campus. Please link to the Web pages for those services for more information about eligibility, turnaround time, and fees.

For more information about renewals and recalls, please contact the Circulation Desk (612-626-5653 or biomcirc@umn.edu).

Need a book from a library on a different bank or campus, but the weather outside is too much to brave? If you need library materials from the Bio-Medical Library, PhotoDelivery offers document delivery services for a nominal fee. But what if you need library materials located in Wilson Library, Magrath Library, Walter Library, or one of the many libraries on the Twin Cities campus? Two services offered by the University Libraries, Point to Point and LUMINA to U, might be the services you’re looking for!

Point to Point is a free delivery service provided to deliver books from one campus or bank to another for University of Minnesota students, staff, and faculty. Point to Point provides delivery of currently available books to a library on a different bank or campus than the library that owns the material. Some library materials, such as reference books, reserve readings, and journals, are not available through Point to Point. Point to Point services may be requested in person at any circulation desk or online at https://www.lib.umn.edu/ordering/p2p.phtml.

LUMINA to U provides a variety of free and fee-based document delivery services for current students, staff, and faculty. Students may request delivery of articles and off-campus delivery of books, while faculty, staff, and students registered with Disability Services may request delivery of articles and on- and off-campus delivery of books.

Frequent PubMed users may be interested in exploring two browser enhancements which allow users to initiate PubMed searches directly from a web browser window, and which are customized for University of Minnesota users.

Bookmarklets are short JavaScript applications contained in a web browser bookmark. They are often used to initiate a search in a web site database (e.g., in Google or Amazon.com). For frequently searched sites, they are quicker to use than first loading the web site home page and then entering the search on that page.

Several bookmarklets have been written for PubMed. This U Minn PubMed search bookmarklet has the additional advantage of activating the U. Libraries' Find It service in PubMed. Find It helps users link from PubMed to full text articles available through the Libraries. (For more information on Find It, see the Find It FAQ or http://blog.lib.umn.edu/archives/messn006/molbiolibrary/012029.html).

You can add the bookmarklet to your list of bookmarks/favorites or to your bookmark toolbar as you would for any bookmark (e.g., right-click the link above and "Bookmark this link"). The bookmarklet works on current versions of Internet Explorer and Mozilla products, on both PC and Mac platforms.

For Mozilla Firefox users, Chad Fennell at the Bio-Med Library has also whipped up a PubMed toolbar search plugin with similar utility. This tool creates a Find It-enabled toolbar search box, for direct searching PubMed from the browser. (Firefox comes with toolbar searches for Google and several other databases pre-installed. See Firefox Central for more on toolbar search engines.)

Enabling the U. Minnesota PubMed toolbar search is a two-step process. First, go to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html and search for "NCBI PubMed" in the "Install search plugins" section. Follow the instructions to install. This will add the PubMed toolbar search to your browser.

Next, to enable the U Minn Find It function in your toolbar search, replace the file pubmed.src in Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/searchplugins/ with this version of the file.

Note that both the bookmarklet and toolbar search plugin tell PubMed to activate a web cookie (indicating you want U. Minnesota resources), so cookies must be enabled on your browser to use these tools.

Chad and I hope that one or both of these tools proves useful for you!
