I believe that leaders are powerful. Therefore, the term leadership is a process where someone is in power over a group of people. Not necessarily in the form of a dictatorship, but they help the group come to a final decision on the different issues and topics of discussion. Someone who obtains great leadership ability will be able to influence a group into making a decision. Leaders must be very trustworthy because no one will listen otherwise. Motivation is key for leadership. When your team is down and doesn't believe they can finish a project or win a game, the leader has to be able to motivate the team to finish and finish strong. I also still think that someone who obtains great leadership abilities will be able to influence a group into making a decision. Leadership is guided by a key set of values. These values need to be consistent so both the leader and team will stay on task. The world is changing every day, and with change, leaders need to be able to adapt and accomplish their goals. Leaders might not be able to finish all the goals that they have during their term, but if they are a great leader they will relay their passion on to others. Leaders need to be able to listen. Showing excellent attentive and active listening is key when winning over the support of others. It will also show that you care about other's opinions and what they have to say or offer. Leaders need to be able to make a great first impression and make it a lasting one. Leaders need to have individual goals, but also set goals for their entire group. These goals need to be very clear throughout the group so they can be achieved for the best results. Leaders must be able to make lasting and meaningful relationships with a variety of people.

Leaders should be able to lead online and in-person meetings. Leaders need to be up to date with technology because many competitors will be using it.

Analysis:

I liked the talk about meeting online. I interned this summer for CUNA Mutual Group in Madison, WI this summer and we dealt a lot with this technology in the Lender Development Program (LDP). LDP was actually in the Wall Street Journal which was very exciting! I found the circus analogy a bit cheesy, but did like this quote: "Part of what makes the circus metaphor so rich is its applicability to so many aspects of the communication style process," (48).

Analysis:

I didn't find this article of much use in my ongoing definition of leadership. I did however enjoy this line: "Our relationships are an essential part of our environment," (116). I think that all leaders must be able to form relationships with a variety of people. This helps with networking, but also with being a leader because you know more people on a personal basis.

Analysis:

I enjoyed this weeks readings and I believe that setting goals is one of the most important parts of being a leader and leading a group: In this reading it is mentioned by Komives, Lucas, and McMahons (1998), "If the group is not clear about its purposes and goals, or if the group cannot agree on shared goals, then it might collapse at this stage" (pp. 168-169).
Analysis:

I'm actually not adding anything this week about racism or most topics we discussed in the readings. I have read multiple Malcolm Gladwell's books along with the assigned readings and I really do not believe that this has to do with the definition of leadership. I say this because some of the world's greatest leaders were racist, prejudice, and anti-semetic (note: I do not agree at all with their decisions, but they led and convinced millions of people to do things that they wanted done). I only added one thing that is very meaningful to me because I believe it to be true. In the great words of Mr. Gladwell: "...first impressions play in our lives-requires that we take active steps to manage and control those impressions," (98).

Leaders should be able to give and receive constructional feedback. This will better them as leaders and also make the group stronger and more knowledgeable.

Analysis:
This week the only thing I am adding is that leaders should be able to give and receive feedback. I like the idea of doing a 720 degree circle when it comes to feedback: "...people conduct not just 360-degree feedback, but what we might call 720-degree feedback-including key people in your private life as well as your public life," (64-65). This makes sense because you get a variety of different types of people that have different knowledge about you and your decision.

The right decision isn't always the best decision, or most obvious. Leaders must be able to make the decision that has the greatest benefit for the group, even if it is not always the most favorable decision. The world is changing every day, and with change, leaders need to be able to adapt and accomplish their goals. Analysis:

I decided to take out a few lines because of comments I received on previous entries. I also added one idea about listening from our reading. Good leaders, "...are receptive and genuinely interested in the views and input of others," (Barbuto, Wheeler). All great leaders need to be able to listen to what people inside or outside their group have to say.

Last Week:

To have good leadership one must be able to make tough decisions. The right decision isn't always the best decision, or most obvious. Leaders must be able to make the decision that has the greatest benefit for the group, even if it is not always the most favorable decision.

The world is changing every day, and with change, leaders need to be able to adapt and accomplish their goals. Leaders might not be able to finish all the goals that they have during their term, but if they are a great leader they will relay their passion on to others.

Analysis:

This is the most meaningful quote I have seen yet in this class: "Achieving your highest and most noble aspirations for your organization may take more than a lifetime. Your efforts may only begin this work. But you can accomplish something worthwhile every day in the interactions you have with the people at work, with your family, and with those you encounter by chance. Adaptive leadership is a daily opportunity to mobilize the resources of people to thrive in a changing and challenging world," (Heifetz). I didn't find a whole lot to ad to my definition this week, but really enjoyed this quote and tried to incorporate it into my ongoing definition of leadership.

Note: I could not find a way to view this weeks reading in a page numbered form. I clicked on the link and it showed up as one long page so I could not find a page number for a proper quotation.

Analysis:
Our readings discussed mainly about ethics, which some might believe is a trait of leadership. I would have to disagree. I believe that many of the world's greatest leaders do not make the most ethical decisions, but that makes them great leaders. They are able to make the right decision, even in the hardest of times. Sometimes the right decisions isn't always the right decision: "Right versus right, then, is at the heart of our toughest choices," (17).

One idea I picked up from this weeks readings is the idea of values. All great leaders have them, and all great leaders need them. I did an exercise recently where I was asked to pick my 5 key values which are listed below: Family, integrity, happiness, and respect. This was a great exercise which I highly recommend everyone to do because it really makes you think about yourself. One line from the reading that really sparked my interest in this subject was, "They infuse the work with their own values and experiences," (34). I also liked answering the questions because they made me think much deeper on this subject.

My definition of leadership will pretty much stay the same except for a few factors. In a reading for this week trust is mentioned and it sparked my mind. This summer I went to a seminar by Dave Horsager who is convinced that trust is crucial. He discussed how trust plays a vital role in leadership. I believe that to obtain leadership skills, one must contain trustworthy qualities. In the reading what really sparked my mind was this simple, but meaningful quote, "At any level, whether you are a manager, CEO, or head of state, trust might be the "do or die" foundation for leading," (83). A leader cannot lead without being trusted by the group which he/she is leading. I also like the idea of motivation because all great leaders from basketball coaches to evil dictators have used it as a key trait.
