Penalties Regarding The Scandal

”The NBA issued some of the harshest penalties in its history by banning nine players for more than 140 games” (ESPN.com). Some individuals feel that these penalties are too harsh, I beg to differ. I believe these penalties are the best for the league. The commissioner of the NBA, David Stern, says “The line is drawn, and my guess is that won't happen again -- certainly not by anybody who wants to be associated with our league.” I agree players must know these types of actions are unacceptable, which creates a safer environment for both players as well as fans.
I would also like to know what your reaction would have been in you were in Artest’s position. Personally I would not have reacted the way Artest did. I feel that it is immature and uncalled for. However, I am not saying I would have been happy by any means. I would have had a few choice words and sat back down on the bench. I feel that there is a boundary between the court and the stands and whoever crosses it is in the wrong. If a player goes into the stands he is in the wrong and if a fan charges the court he is in the wrong.

I disagree, I believe that the penalties enforced on the players as well as the fans were significant. The NBA can not afford to have this type of situation reoccur and by the commissioner, David Stern, imposing these penalties he has made a statement for all players. Players will now be more reluctant to imitate these types of behaviors. Security may have been an issue in this case. However, I do not feel that the NBA should take drastic measures regarding this incident. If the NBA punishes a fan for speaking his mind they will lose a significant amount of fan support. One part of being at the game is to see the reactions of other fans. However, I do believe that they should enforce a little more security to help regulate the fans from throwing objects onto the players.

I'm not entirely sure if I agree with how severe the punishment was. 140 games sounds like an aweful lot, we can't forget that this was obviously stupid of them but they are not totally at fault her maybe the security is alittle to blame for what happened, maybe if they had more security, which I think they should being the players and the fans almost sit together as it is. Thats it I'm done.

I totally agree. Artest knew he was going to have to deal with fans, especially after his quarrel with Wallace. As you said it seemed as if he was asking to get something thrown on him. However, in his defense it is unacceptable for a fan to throw something at a player. It is one thing to hassle the players it is another to potentially harm them. All in all I agree with you on your standings of the incident.

While I don't know how I would have responded in Artest's position, I feel that the blame must be placed squarely on him. NBA players know that they will have to deal with heckling, and that's part of what the fans pay to do. That's what makes American sports so fun for the fans. Why would Artest by laying on that table in the first place? It seemed like he was asking to be messed with. I whole-heartedly agree with David Stern's decisions, but I just hope the league doesn't take drastic measures to prohibit fan involvement. Obviously throwing a beer at a player is unnacceptable, but I can just see the league imposing penalties on the fans that would make attending an NBA game less fun.
