Last year I led an ATIP review on clickers that included folks from several colleges around the U and the IT Director for the Rochester campus and the head of ITSS at UM-Duluth.

Part of this process included taking a look at what's next for clickers beyond the device specific options offered currently by most vendors. We opened this question up to a broader interpretation to include polling systems, etc....

I'm reformatting most of those finding as my blog post. The information is about a year old, but still relatively new in the field.

Popular Polling software (most used by some faculty at the U):

PollEverywhere:

Text message (SMS) polls and voting

Can display results on web or through PowerPoint (updates automatically)

Can also vote via Twitter or Smartphones

polldaddy:

no innovations - simply a free/for pay pro options easy to use online poll and survey tool

misterpoll:

Internet's Largest Poll Database

free and easy to use

polls made by accounts are searchable

automatically adds a threaded discussion for every poll that folks can go to immediately after completing poll

Software driven clickers (including mobile devices):

iRespond AnyPlace - web-based version of clicker

Allows for essay answers

Homework

eInstruction:

vClicker mobile edition - virtual clicker

TurningPoint:

ResponseWare - web-based polling on laptops and cell phones/smart phones with web browsers

works on Wi-Fi and cell/data networks

Allows alphanumeric entry

Aids with accessibility issues

RemotePoll - Simultaneously connect multiple lecture rooms through the internet using ResponseCard hardware and RemotePoll to enable the host site to gather and display results immediately from all locations.

iClicker:

web>clicker - browser-based voting system that combines the simplicity and reliability of i>clicker with the flexibility of laptops and handheld devices.

works with laptops

works with mobile devices that support a browser

Systems adding new functionality beyond traditional clickers:

Quizdom:

Q7 Presenter Tablet - allows teachers to draw, annotate, and control computer applications without being tethered to a computer. Additionally, presenters can view notes, presentation indicators, and input from participants on the tablet's LCD screen.

Q5 instructor remote - can start and stop media as well as initiate a spontaneous question right from the remote.

Slide/question bank available for many disciplines from company

iRespond:

Intellislate - device that allows annotation over presentations, programs, documents and web pages Clip Art Library for Geography, Math, Science, History and more

iRespond mini tablet

Control your PC using the iRespond Mini-Tablet!

Tablet technology functionality at one-half the cost

Issue questions to students

Use as a teacher's/presenter's remote

Draw and capture capability

eInstruction:

InterWrite WorkSpace - vendor provided content (content, lessons, assessments, etc...)

InterWriteMobi - The teacher and student can concurrently interact with and contribute to the same digital content - ideal for team activities, learning simulations, student exploration, and more.

Hotseat (developed internally for use at Purdue http://www.purdue/hotseat):

Enabling collaborative micro-discussion in and out of the classroom

social networking-powered mobile Web application

creates a collaborative classroom, allowing students to provide near real-time feedback during class and enabling professors to adjust the course content and improve the learning experience

Students can post messages to Hotseat using:

Facebook

Twitter

text messages

logging into Hotseat site

Students can also vote on questions posed to help instructor prioritize questions to answer

DyKnow (more of a technology classroom management tool):

Has a polling tool

Unique in that there is 2-way communication through the tool (faculty can address students questions individually)

Campus guests now can use wireless Internet service by logging on to the “UofM Guest” SSID. Guests can use any existing e-mail address to log in to this network.

This service is "best effort," offering no encryption and is limited in bandwidth and capacity. Therefore, presenters, conference attendees, and other official University guests still should use one of the other options for accessing the wireless network on campus. Additional information about other guest access options is at www.umn.edu/wireless/information/access/index.html.

In addition, customers with Service Gateway access may create and manage Guest accounts at no charge. Also, OIT has discontinued the service by which guests can sponsor themselves by purchasing a wireless account with a credit card. Guests should either use the “UofM Guest” SSID or use one of the additional options.

University students, faculty, and staff are reminded that they should log in to the “UofM Secure” network with their Internet ID (X.500) and password to take full advantage of the wireless network. The “UofM Guest” SSID is not designed to support University affiliates.

Windows operating system users who haven't kept up with Microsoft’s security updates might find themselves infected with the Conficker C worm.

Conficker, also known as Kido or Downadup, cropped up in November, and exploits a vulnerability in Windows that Microsoft patched in October. The worm threat, triggered on April 1, attempts to download files from a list of addresses, redirects DNS requests to certain sites (it doesn’t want you finding a fix for it!) and stops some Windows services and processes.

You can easily check to see if you're already infected by visiting Microsoft's Web site and security sites such as Symantec or McAfee. If you can surf those sites, you're probably fine. If you can't you're probably infected. Find more information on Conficker, including ways in which to remove it, from Web sites such as Symantec or ZDNet.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is standardizing telephone feature sets and button layouts on all multi-line telephones throughout the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus.

The work is being done to prepare for an online self-help process that will allow authorized users to manage voice services on their telephones. It will allow OIT to create significant savings in human resource overhead, to automate the order process, and to improve the accuracy of our databases. In addition, this change will introduce a universal, familiar feature set to each University phone.

No fixed features will be removed from telephones, but some features will be accessed with the use of keypad buttons instead of fixed programmed buttons on the telephones. For example, the “Last Number Redial” feature will be accessed by using “#9.”

All ITE12 and ITE30 telephones will be converted to the new telephone feature sets within the next year. Cutovers will be done building-by-building, starting with the St. Paul campus, followed by East Bank and West Bank, respectively. Posters indicating "Telephone Standardization in Progress" will be displayed in buildings while cutovers are happening.

For more information, go to www.oit.umn.edu/telephones and click on “Campus Implementation,” or send e-mail to ntsphones@umn.edu.
