The University of Minnesota Rochester uses social media to keep their students and faculty involved and active in the college community. UMR uses both Facebook and Twitter for keeping students up-to date and even for some curriculum related activities.
Some of the questions we had are:
1. How is social media going to further the students in the future?
2. How do you see it growing?
3. What other social media sites will be utilized?
4. Who manages the accounts?

UMR uses 2 major types of Social Media, Facebook and Twitter. Both social media sites are very useful in keeping current students, staff, faculty, prospective students, and the community up to date on what is happening around campus. From what i have noticed, the Facebook pages seems to be a lot more helpful to those not already involved inside UMR. It is a great place for incoming students to meet and connect with other incoming students as well as current students, or a great place for prospective students to get insight on current students opinions of the school. The Facebook pages is great about posting pictures and updates of special events around campus, as well as small write up of the events at UMR. The Twitter page seems to be used more for quick updates and news drops, featuring links to different articles or pages that could be interesting to the students of UMR.

At UMR social media is something that is used in different ways. Along with using social media for classes like we do in Spanish and this class, social media sites like Facebook, and Pinterest are used as well. On Facebook groups are able to inform students about events that they can get involved with, and give people a chance to get to know each other. Groups like SAB, RSA and the dance team, allow students to get more involved through mobile sites. Other pages dedicated to the different graduating class, help first year students connect with their classmates before school starts, ensuring that they don't feel alone in the transition to college. Although the pinterest site is not utilized, it is another way for people to find out what the school is about.

Our questions are"
1. In what ways can social media be utilized better by the UMR admissions team in order to recruit students?
2 Do pages like the UMR confessions page affect the image being targeted to prospective students?
3. How popular have UMR social media sites been?
4. Who is in charge of UMR social media sites? Is there one main person or a group of people that work on these sites?

This week we are talking about how UMR utilizes social media. UMR has two main social media sites of Facebook and Twitter. The Facebook pages allow different years at UMR to be connected into one page. The Facebook for UMR also allows clubs and organizations to post about events and how things are going. This allows for better communication between organizations at UMR. The second outlet that is used by UMR is Twitter. This is run by faculty at UMR and provides information on UMR news and events that are happening on campus. When needed to be seen quickly Twitter is a very effective way to get communication to the students.

Questions

Do you think creating a UMR Pinterest would be an effective way to show student activity for prospected students?

Do you think that UMR could expand some Facebook pages run by the administration to pass new and events in an effective way?

Why has UMR not utilized things such as blogs or forums to express opinions by students or faculty?

Would you find it beneficial for UMR to use more social media? Why or why not?

The main outlets of social media that I have discovered the University of Minnesota Rochester utilizing the most is Facebook. As a UMR student, I have used Twitter for social media as well but solely for class purposes. The University has been able to utilize Facebook the most with their creations of "Class of ----" pages, their home page as well specific interest pages such as "UMR ride share". I have found all of these pages to be insightful and very useful over the years. These pages are primary outlets to communicate with fellow students and administration staff. The most important use I have found using these pages was when I have used them to sell/ buy text books from other students.

1. Are there any social media outlets that the University is considering using in the near future?
2. How will social media for the University change in the coming years as enrollment becomes larger?
3. Who primarily manages all of the UMR social media?
4. Will there be plans to begin a UMR book exchange page on Facebook where students can buy and sell textbooks?

UMR has a hand in social media in a few places. They are on Facebook with several different pages highlighting their different clubs/organizations within the university. They are not involved with Twitter, other than the professors and students who use it. A few things that UMR could do better with their social media would be to incorporate it with classes more. It would be very easy to integrate information about classes through social media, and it would be very easy for students to access. A couple of questions we have for the digital communications manager would be:
1. What future social media actions will be implemented for the future?
2. Why is the University limited to only a few social media outputs?
3. What ways could students be involved in the decision making process?
4. Is there some forms of social media that the U has, but isn't very wide-known to students?

There are many avenues by which the University of Minnesota utilizes social media. For example, many students and faculty are connected via Facebook and Twitter. These online platform serves to meet a variety needs. Many clubs connect and communicate via facebook, such as the Student Activities Board (SAB) and the Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) club, to name a few. Additionally, there is a "The Class of"https://www.facebook.com/pages/University-of-Minnesota-Rochester-Class-of-2015/126120637453478 Facebook page that allows individuals, whether they be potential or incoming students to get in touch. This particular Facebook page can be extremely helpful for first year students interested in getting acquainted with their roommate(s) or fellow classmates prior to coming to school.
Another interesting use for Facebook is the UMR Raptor Rideshare page. This page allows for students to connect with other students in order to coordinate rides. Students who are willing to take others with them can post when and where they are going. It allows students without vehicles to get rides.

Social Media in China

The social media website we have chosen is a chinese social media site popular to over 30% of all internet user in china. This site called Sina Weibo is similar to Facebook and Twitter and is gaining popularity in other countries. Sina Weibo announced that this social media site is expanding into Singapore and other surrounding countries. Sina Weibo is different than most social media sites when it comes to the content that can be posted. China has strict social media policies that does not allow people to what they call "breaking the constitution". Chinese social media has strict rules and regulations that are punishable by law. Some of these examples are, promoting feudal superstitions, sexually suggestive material, gambling, violence, murder. Terrorism or inciting others to criminal activity; openly insulting other people or distorting the truth to slander people and also Injuring the reputation of state organizations. These rules are set to protect the government of China and prevent an outbreak of criminal activity over social media. In China social media such as Facebook and Twitter are not allowed. This is because China is a communist country and do not want to allow access to their people. Weibo allows Chinese countries to talk and opinionate as long as it follows strict regulations that the government has put on them. One big part of social media in china is there instant messaging capabilities. Many of these sites use what is called a QQ code that makes it possible to instant message on social media. Very different from here in the US, where instant messaging comes standard. In China a QQ code is required on sign up for the capabilities to chat.
Social media in this part of the world is very different from what many Americans are use to. It is interesting to see the variation in social media and networking all over the world.
