I am pleased to announce that Wednesday, January 30, - Friday, February 1, 2013, the College of Liberal Arts Interdepartmental EEG Facility will be hosting Steve Luck from the University of California-Davis for an ERP/EEG workshop open to University of Minnesota researchers with interests in ERP methodology. Dr. Luck is the Author of An Introduction to the Event Related Potential Technique, which is widely regarded as the definitive introductory textbook in the field. He annually accepts a limited number of highly qualified students into his ERP Bootcamp at UC-Davis. He also conducts a few "Mini ERP Bootcamps" each year at other institutions, one of which we have the privilege of hosting in January.

The first two days of the our Mini Bootcamp will consist primarily of lectures. The workshop will conclude with hands-on training in the use of Dr. Luck's free EEGLab software for half a day on Friday morning.

If you would like to attend, please email me (burto108@umn.edu).

Additional information (e.g., location, detailed schedule, etc.) will be provided after we know how many attendees to expect and how much space we will need.

Instead, you will need to enter through the entrance to the NEW building with an RFID card, available from Nicole Wilkinson at the front desk during normal business hours. Nicole will be around to let people in between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., but if you require after-hours access, AND IF YOU HAVE A SCAN SCHEDULED PRIOR TO NEXT MONDAY, you should see Nicole as soon as possible. You will need to have been approved already for building access, and you will need your U-Card with you when you receive your new RFID card.

If you won't need building access until after the scanner move, you should wait until further notice to request an RFID.

As CLA neuroimagers are aware, a lot is happening at the 3T in 2010. The scanner is moving to the new part of the CMRR next month. Free pilot hours were discontinued July 1. Andrea Schweikert has resigned as our MR tech to attend medical school, and we are currently searching for a replacement. Because so many things are in a state of flux, I will be posting more frequently to try to keep everyone apprised. I will start with a summary of where things currently stand.

Scanner move
The scanner move has been delayed until approximately September 20th. On or around that date, the scanner will be shut down to begin the process of moving to its new space in the CMRR expansion. The move should take a minimum of four weeks, but it could take longer if there are unforeseen difficulties. Labs that have equipment stored at the 3T will need to remove it prior to September 20th. Each lab is responsible for storing its own equipment until the new space becomes available.

Pilot scans
The University's recent interpretation of NIH policy (Circular A-21, "Cost Principles for Educational Institutions") has led to (among other changes) the discontinuation of the CMRR's policy of allotting up to 30 pilot hours at no cost for newly approved studies. As of June 2010, all scans conducted at the CMRR must be paid for at the current rate of $250 per hour. Pilot data is vital for obtaining external funding, and finding an alternative source of funds that will allow new neuroimaging studies to continue to conduct pilot scans prior to grant applications is a high priority for all of us.

MR tech
The Department of Radiology, with input from the 3T Executive Committee, is searching for a clinically certified MRI technologist to replace Andrea as the MR tech for the 3T at the CMRR. The plan is to have a replacement hired by the time the 3T is up and running at its new location. The need for a clinically certified tech implies that there will be clinically oriented scans conducted at the 3T after the move. We have been assured that research scans will have scheduling priority and that a second 3T will be acquired before the influx of clinical researchers becomes an inconvenience for current 3T users. I should have an update on this developing situation after the September 7th 3T Executive Committee meeting.

I will post information here as I receive it.

The College of Liberal Arts Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs is pleased to announce the institution of the CLA Interdepartmental EEG Facility (IEF). With generous funding assistance from the Office of the Vice President for Research and space provided by the Center for Cognitive Sciences, the IEF will feature a state-of-the-art 128-channel electroencephalography system from Advanced Neuro Technology. The system includes hardware and software for stimulus presentation, data acquisition, and data analysis, including event-related potentials (ERPs) and source modeling. Equipped with two 64-channel amplifiers and 128-electrode caps, researchers will have the option of acquiring 64-channel data from two subjects simultaneously or high-density EEG data from a single subject with 128 channels. Further enhancing the flexibility of the system, it will feature two styles of electrode caps to meet diverse needs of CLA researchers. The facility will be staffed with graduate and undergraduate students and CLA Neuroimaging Staff Scientist, Dr. Philip Burton. The staff will provide training to faculty and students and assistance with data acquisition and analysis. Neuroimaging courses that have previously focused primarily on functional MRI will add an extensive EEG/ERP component, including hands-on instruction in the IEF, providing additional training opportunities for research assistants and broadening the scope of students' fundamental neuroimaging training. The facility will be available to all CLA faculty, staff, and students whose research will benefit from EEG and ERP methodology.
