The Constitution Ratification Process

A draft of the Constitution is available online.

Please read the document - and identify any changes you'd like to see made. Then, we'd like you to take a survey to approve, approve with changes, or reject with changes.

The deadline for voting on the Constitution is Friday, Dec. 11th by close of business (~5pm).

We will meet again on December 14th and during that meeting, we will discuss any and all amendments that have been suggested and hopefully move to a formal, verbal approval and adoption of the document

Three main items were discussed at the November 30th meeting of the Kin-GSO:

The Draft of the Organization's Constitution
The Nomination/Election Procedure for Officers
The Mentorship Program

The following action steps were determined following the meeting: ratifying the constitution, moving forward on the elections for Spring 2010, and supporting the mentorship program developed by Jackie Kelly and Nicole Bolter.

To take action on those items, members must first ratify the constitution (a quorum of 15 votes is needed). The constitution is visible online. Members are encouraged to read the constitution and then vote on its ratification.

Once the constitution has been ratified, the election/nomination process will begin. Further information on that process will be available at a later date, and can be found in the constitution.

Research Interest Database

The Kinesiology Graduate Student Organization will be creating a mini-database of all the current graduate students and their research interests.

The next meeting of the Kinesiology Graduate Student Organization will be on either Monday, November 30 or Tuesday, December 1st. Please take the doodle poll to vote on your preference!

Also, we will be having a Thanksgiving Break Happy Hour on Tuesday, November 24th. Time and place TBD (Suggestions welcome!) - stay tuned for more info!

Today's lunch meeting was well-attended with 15 Kinesiology graduate students present.

A collaborative discussion of the goals and options of the organization ensued - with the many deliverables agreed upon before the next meeting in three weeks.

"Models" Kinesiology Graduate Student Organizations

Below is a list of some comparable GSOs that we could potentially model.

Michigan State - Kinesiology Graduate Student Organization
The purpose of the organization is to provide a forum for interaction amongst graduate students and faculty members between and within the Department of Kinesiology.
Texas A&M - Health and Kinesiology Grad Student Organization
The purpose of the Health and Kinesiology (HLKN) Graduate Student Organization will be two-fold: (1) Academic; and (2) Social.
Academic: Provide information that is relevant and pertinent to the professional development of HLKN graduate students. This organization will provide HLKN graduate students the opportunity to voice and share group concerns pertaining to current departmental procedures. The Graduate Student Organization will also serve as a secondary resource for all incoming/prospective graduate applicants. Academic/Professional development activities will include but not be limited to the following: Promote panel discussions, guest lecturers, and seminars covering topics such as thesis/dissertation development, contract negotiation skills, grant writing techniques, locating funding sources, post-doctorate opportunities, and committee member selection. Also, aid the dissemination of important information such as fellowships, scholarships, conferences and important deadlines.
Social: Promote a more cohesive graduate student body within the department through sponsored social events. Graduate students will be able to interact with other departmental graduate students that share similar interests and professional goals. As a result, graduate students will be able to have a professional network in place upon graduation. Social development activities will include but not be limited to the following: Community outings, picnics, barbeques, and team building activities to promote communication skills and provide an outlet from academic rigors.
Purdue University - Health and Kinesiology Grad Student Organization
A graduate education in the HK department prepares individuals to become future leaders in their fields and facilitators for the betterment of society. The Health and Kinesiology Graduate Student Organization (HKGSO) serves as a resource for current graduate students to build upon the foundation of their education with leadership, service, and social opportunities. The HKGSO is run by the graduate students and, as such, represents all individuals pursuing graduate study in the department whether they are enrolled full- or part-time and whether they are employed by the department, employed by other agencies on or off campus, or financing their own education. The HKGSO includes all HK graduate students. Board members are elected in December and fulfill various responsibilities within the HKGSO. Also, there is a student representative to the HK Graduate Faculty that communicates regularly with the Director of Graduate Studies and attends HK Graduate Faculty Meetings to provide voice for student issues.
University of Waterloo (CA) - Kinesiology Student Association
The object of the Association shall be:
1.    To unite, for their mutual benefit, graduate students of the Department of Kinesiology, University of Waterloo;
2.   To acquire and make available information to assist students in their sojourn in the Department and at the University;
3.    To nominate and elect representatives to Departmental and University Committees;
4.    To act as the official voice of the graduate students of the Department for academic and administrative purposes.
