Looks like the February 26, 1996 issue of Sports Illustrated has an article titled "A gut-wrenching victory." Apparently there is a picture (PHOTO (COLOR): A wan Kempainen hurled resolutely toward the finish) with the article, but it isn't online. Maybe somebody has an old edition!
