The Office for Equity and Diversity invites applications from undergraduate students with strong research and writing skills. This is an excellent opportunity to work directly with the Associate Vice Provost for Equity and Diversity on university initiatives that will advance the work of equity and diversity at the University of Minnesota. The successful candidate will have experience in researching and writing and will have the ability to work independently. Duties include researching, writing, tracking various projects, and administrative duties.

Position is for Fall Semester 2008, with a possible renewal through Spring Semester 2009.

Multicultural Family Literacy Program

The Multicultural Family Literacy Program engages University undergraduate and graduate students with K-12 students and their parents at schools and community sites in the Twin Cities area.Core program components are instruction for parents, instruction for children, training for parents on how to be their childrens primary teacher and to be full partners in the education of their children, and interactive literacy activities between parents and children.

University undergraduate and graduate students receive an hourly wage for their service through Federal College Work-Study funds for Community Service. $10 & $10.75. Family Literacy training includes literacy skills development, cooperative learning training, parenting skill development, relationship building skills and leadership development.

Several students in the program also may participate in the administrative aspects of the program in addition to the work at the sites. This program initiative seeks funding from area corporations and foundations for ongoing programming activities.

Enrichment Program Village Leader Job Description

WISE CHARTER SCHOOL:
WISE Charter School exists to ensure the academic and social development of students while restoring the essence of the family and community with an emphasis on academic achievement, cultural awareness, and responsible citizenship. WISE Charter School is a K-8 ele-middle school located in Minneapolis.

BASIC PURPOSE:
The Enrichment Program exists to create an emotionally and physically safe environment for children to extend their learning about themselves and the world around them while reinforcing positive virtues and values that are consistent with the WISE Charter School.

The Enrichment Program is a comprehensive package of non-school hour programming. The curriculum is developed based on the specific needs of youth being served within the following program areas: Academic Development, Arts and Music, Health and Nutrition, Recreational Activities, Technology, and Youth Development.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
1. Facilitate multi-age groups and execute program plan including homework, skills building, and enrichment activities.
2. Create lesson plans and develop activities based on the program curriculum to meet the needs of the group.
3. Provide careful and effective supervision of student groups in facilitation of positive group interactions.
4. Establish meaningful relationships with students in order to facilitate positive group interaction and community within the group.
5. Communicate appropriately with students, parents, teachers, program staff regarding student behavior and performance with regard to out-of-school time activities.
6. Implement and maintain program standards and procedures including student discipline, daily routines, safety, and records keeping.
7. Participate in ongoing supervision, staff development, and planning activities to support continued growth and achievement of program goals.
8. Other duties as assigned to achieve the mission, goals, and vision of the WISE Charter School.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. An education, youth development, counseling, psychology, social work major is preferred, but not required.
2. Experience/ knowledge in implementing elementary/middle school, academic or youth development activities in a school or community based organization setting.
3. Experience successfully employing basic methods in overseeing and directing student activities in a variety of age appropriate settings.
4. Experience successfully engaging and developing relationships with youth from a variety of cultural backgrounds and knowledge of activities that foster cultural understanding.
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with students, staff, parents and community.
6. Demonstrates creativity, mature judgment, ability to multi-task, ability to think on feet.
7. Ability to work independently and exhibit a positive attitude, self-motivation, stress/ time management.
8. Availability weekdays, 2:30-5:30pm.

YMCA Beacons Job Positions

Volunteer Coordinator $10-12 an hour 15-18 hours a week
The Volunteer Coordinator position will work directly with program participants and volunteers within the Beacon's Program at Anne Sullivan School. This position will work directly with the recruitment, placement and training of volunteers within the Beacons Program. This position will also track all parent participation within the Beacons program and enter that information within our CTK database. This position will also take on other administrative duties as assigned.

Lead Program Staff $13 an hour 25-28 hours a week
Our Lead Program staff will co-create the Beacons Afterschool and Evening program structure with the Program Director and Assistant Director. We will be hiring three program leads to cover the grades K-2nd, 3-5th, and MS. The Lead Program Staff person will work with our youthworkers to create behavior plans, incentive plans, academic and recreational curriculum, and a positive and safe environment for students. At times lead program staff will need to lead recreational and academic groups in the case of a youthworker being absent.

The Lead Program Staff must be self directed and motivated, have experience working in a very high paced work environment, have experience in conflict resolution with students, be passionate about youthwork and youth development, be able to manage stress well, and be able to function well in a highly collaborative environment.

Youth Development Staff $10 an hour
The youthworker will be responsible for planning, leading, and implementing recreational and academic activities for students ages Kg through Middle School. Youthworkers must be able to connect with students in a multicultural environment and have a strong philosophy of Youth Development Principles. The youth worker will provide high quality recreational, arts-based, and academic experiences for youth that focus on the core values of the YMCA: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

We are specifically looking for staff that are able to lead classes in the areas of: Basic Arts and Crafts, Sports, Double Dutch, Stepping, Photography, Theater, Spoken Word, Leadership, Cooking, Job Skills, and culturally specific programming as it relates to Native American, Somali, Oromo, African American and Deaf and Hard of Hearing cultural groups.

SMART Learning Commons Seeking Peer Consultants

Job Description

The SMART Learning Commons is seeking to hire experienced students (20-25 students) to serve as tutors (SMART Peer Consultants) for accounting, Carlson School related, mathematics, chemistry, physics, food sciences, biology, various foreign languages, statistics, writing, and (applied) economics during the Fall 2008 semester, with the expectation of continuing on in support for Spring 2009. Positions are open at all SMART commons locations: Wilson library, Walter library, and Magrath library.

Qualifications: SMART Consultants must maintain a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average. Additionally, successful completion of the course(s) to be tutored - defined as having earned no lower than a “B� or demonstrated equivalent competency - is required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also essential for this position. Endorsement (a short e-mail or letter) by U of M faculty or instructor is required.

Desirable Additional Qualifications:
• Work-study eligibility
• Successful completion of coursework in the discipline beyond the level to be tutored
• Prior tutoring experience

Duties:
• Assist students through the peer consultation (tutoring) process by:
­ establishing a rapport conducive to positive personal and professional interactions
­ respecting differences in background, opinion, ability, motivation, and desires
­ supporting the student in establishing challenging, yet attainable goals within and beyond the consultation
­ maintaining confidentiality of records, student grades, and other protected information
• Attend and actively participate in scheduled training sessions and staff meetings
• Accurately record consultation proceedings and submit required documentation on established schedule
• Assist graduate assistant consultants in preparing for and conducting academic skills development and exam preparation workshops as assigned
• Represent the SMART Learning Commons effectively and positively
• Other duties as assigned

Hours: Flexible schedules, but most consultants work an average of 7 to 12 hours a week.

Salary: $10 per hour. An additional stipend will be paid for the initial mandatory
pre-semester training in late August.

Avid Program - Tutors needed

Wayzata High School is looking for tutors in the AVID program. AVID is a
new elective class that helps B+ through C range students reach their

tutoring. AVID supports students academically as they challenge
themselves with more rigorous curricula.

Bilingual Survey Interviewers Needed

Wilder Research is looking for part time interviewers that are bilingual in Hmong, Somali, or Karen.

Starting rate is $11.52 to $12.80 an hour.  We are conveniently located on the bus line on University Avenue and Lexington Parkway.

Responsibilities:  Work on human services related survey research projects.  You will phone individuals, identify respondents, and conduct interviews using computer software and/or pencil and paper surveys.  The position requires a minimum of 12 hours a week.

Qualifications:  Qualifications include the following:  excellent interpersonal communication skills, professional attitude, good computer and typing, promptness, attention to detail, and good listening skills.  Must be able to fluently read and speak both  English and Hmong, Somali, or Karen.
