Study Abroad Scholarships

Each year the University of Minnesota distributes approximately $500,000 for study abroad scholarships. The scholarship deadline for Winter Break 2009, Spring Semester 2009, and Calendar Year 2009 is Wednesday, October 22, 2008 . The application can be used to apply for the Study Abroad Scholarship, Diversity in Study Abroad Scholarship, and the Access Abroad Scholarship.

Selection of scholarship recipients is not based on financial need or merit, but rather the essays that each student writes. Currently one-third of all students who apply receive a scholarship. If you will be studying abroad for Winter Break 2009, Spring Semester 2009, or Calendar Year 2009, please visit the Learning Abroad Center’s scholarship webpage at http://www.umabroad.umn.edu/financial/scholarships/uofmScholarships.html.

WTS Scholarships are open to women who:
• Are currently enrolled in a degree program in a transportation related field (such as engineering,
planning, finance, or logistics) in Minnesota and can provide proof of this enrollment. Students at

in the last 5 years
• Have a GPA 3.0 or higher
• Plan to pursue a career in transportation

Electronic applications are available by contacting Kristin Thompson at 612.349.7782 or via email at
kristin.thompson@metc.state.mn.us .

The application form, an accompanying transcript, personal statement, and letter(s) of recommendation must be sent to the address indicated on the application form, and be postmarked by Monday,
November 10, 2008.

Three local winners will advance to the WTS International competition for the following scholarships:
• $3000 Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship
• $3000 Louise Moritz Molitoris Leadership Fund for Undergraduates
• $6000 Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship

A local graduate applicant who demonstrates leadership and commitment to public service may also be advanced to the WTS International competition for the $3000 Elaine Dezenski Legacy Scholarship.

If you have any questions regarding your eligibility, the scholarships awarded, or if your major/program fits the requirements of a transportation related field, please contact Kristin Thompson (see contact information above) prior to filling out your application.

DEADLINE: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2008

WTS is an international organization of transportation professionals with more than 4,000 members in 44 chapters across 3 countries. The women and men who belong to WTS are committed to advancing women in the transportation industry and provide support to students seeking future careers in transportation. The organization provides a neutral forum for the exchange of information, ideas and experiences, encourages the professional development of its members, and promotes industry recognition of women in the field of transportation.

TEACH GRANT PROGRAM

Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. If you are interested in learning more about the TEACH Grant Program, you should contact the financial aid office at the college where you will be enrolled starting with the 2008–2009 school year.

Effective Dates
The first TEACH Grants will be awarded to eligible students for the 2008–2009 school year.

Conditions
In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students (see below for more information on high-need fields and schools serving low-income students). As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant. IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) was disbursed.

Student Eligibility Requirements
To receive a TEACH Grant you must meet the following criteria:
 Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), although you do not have to
demonstrate financial need.
 Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
 Be enrolled as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student in a postsecondary
educational institution that has chosen to participate in the TEACH Grant Program.
 Be enrolled in coursework that is necessary to begin a career in teaching or plan to complete such
coursework. Such coursework may include subject area courses (e.g., math courses for a student
who intends to be a math teacher).
 Meet certain academic achievement requirements (generally, scoring above the 75th percentile on
a college admissions test or maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25).
 Sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve (see below for more information on the TEACH Grant
Agreement to Serve).

High-Need Field
High-need fields are the specific areas identified below:
 Bilingual Education and English Language Acquisition
 Foreign Language
 Mathematics
 Reading Specialist
 Science
 Special Education

Other identified teacher shortage areas as of the time you begin teaching in that field. These
are teacher subject shortage areas (not geographic areas) that are listed in the Department of
Education’s Annual Teacher Shortage Area Nationwide Listing. To access the listing, please go to
