Friday Random Top 10

Last night we hosted 45 just-graduated 7th grade boys and girls at our house. The house is still standing, the mud is mostly in the porch and to the best of my knowledge, all had a good time. We started a fire in the pit and the kids torched their homework and they burned a sacrificial uniform shirt. With that, this week’s top ten:

1. Armalite Rifle – Gang of Four
2. Oliver’s Army – Elvis Costello
3. Cheap Reward – Elvis Costello
4. Handshake Drugs – Wilco
5. Tesla’s Hotel Room – The Handsome Family
6. Old Dan Tucker – Bruce Springsteen
7. 500 Miles – Peter Paul & Mary
8. C’est Si Triste Sans Lui – Cleoma Breaux
9. To Be A Killer – Wes Houston
10. Two Hears Beat As One – U2

Well, after a martial beginning, that list went hard folk. What’s your top 10?

Comments

Pavement "Passat Dream" Brighten the Corners
Neo Psuedo "Rare Time" Laughing Symbols No So No
Neil Young "Red Sun" Silver & Gold
The Velvet Crush "Goin' to My Head" Free Expression
Duke Ellington with Charles Mingus and Max Roach "Solitude" (Alternate Take) Money Jungle
Philip Glass "Opening" Rare on Air, Vol. 2
Freedy Johnston "Until the Sun Comes Back Again" Blue Days, Black Nights
Suzanne Vega "Calypso" Solitude Standing
Okkervil River "Get Big" Black Sheep Boy
Wilco "At Least That's What You Said" A Ghost Is Born

bonus
Guided by Voices "Little Lines" Mag Earwhig!

Trying to do whatever the opposite of outdo is to last week, this list's best cut I won't even make you guess--it's the Velvet Crush (from a great unknown pop album, actually). But when you pull the Spiral Stairs cut from a Pavement CD to open, that has to be a hint, and sure enough, Ellington shows up (again) with an alternate take. The Okkervil River and Wilco are solid, but not even the 4th best cut on either album. And if any of you know Neo Psuedo, you win a prize.

"The Eraser" from Thom Yorke's The Eraser
"Casimir Pulaski Day" from Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise
"Lost In The Snow" from Bruce Hornsby's Halcyon Days
"Syeeda's Song Flute" from John Coltrane's Giant Steps
"Tears Are In Your Eyes" from Yo La Tengo's And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
"Coney Island Baby" from Tom Waits' Blood Money
"The Boy With The Arab Strap" from Belle&Sebastien's The Boy With The Arab Strap
"Elephant In White" from Hot IQs Dangling Modifier
"Tank Park Salute" from Billy Bragg's Don't Try This At Home
"Sick, Sick, Sick" from Queens Of The Stone Age's Era Vularis
...rock on kids...

That Belle and Sebastion songs is one of my faves!

amen to that. what do you think of the life pursuit album?

I like TLP! As with most B & S, the good songs are great, the so-so songs are... well so-so.

Today, I'm riding my bike to work, it's a gorgeous morning, Misty Mountain Hop is blaring on the I-pod and pop, out goes the front tire a few blocks from home. Walk back, change clothes, jump in car, late for work.

daddy daycare's taking the girls to soccer camp this morning. i'll attach the kid trailer to my bike and haul my son around the colorado front range to get our daily doses of vitamin d. bummer about your front tire woes. keep on riding...been listening to the new death cab for cutie. i like it better when i think it's a new and improved postal service album.
