The University of Minnesota has hundreds of groups on campus, run by students for students. Did you know there's a group for graphic design students? It's called the Graphic Design Student Association (or GDSA). The aim of GDSA is to serve our student community by allowing them to meet and network with other graphic design students, from freshmen to seniors. In addition, we put on events like speakers, studio tours, and group projects. We are here for you and in turn, you are here for us.
Being involved in student groups is a great way to meet new people and get involved, especially for all of incoming/freshmen students. Involvement leaves you feeling refreshed, inspired, and motivated. When I joined the GDSA, I was a sophomore and helped to organize a few events. The next semester, I ran for an officer position (which I still serve) within the GDSA so I could be even more involved. I have built my leadership and communication strengths since being in this group, and putting on events for the student community makes me feel quite satisfied.
So, if you're reading this, pay attention! Next week, on Tuesday the 1st of February, between 11:15-11:30, please stop by room 363 upstairs, because the GDSA is holding a mass public meeting (an informal one) so you can come meet us, we can meet you, and talk about ideas for events to have during this semester. If the student community isn't involved, then the group can't be strong, and, in turn, we can't support our community.
If you're on Facebook, check out the GDSA page. If you have questions about the group or want to be on the mailing list, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or you can email me at email@example.com
Of course, being involved in GDSA or any group isn't necessary, but I highly suggest it. You never know who you will meet, what you'll experience, or the kinds of skills and strengths you can build. Here is a complete and current list of student groups at the University. Find one that sounds interesting and get to it! http://www.sua.umn.edu/groups/directory/index.php?zclass=All
I'm still waiting for confirmation and consent to photograph my classes so I may post pictures of classes for you to see. Stay tuned, I hope we can get rolling by February!
