Metropolitan Design Center Undergraduate Travel Scholarship

2010 Metropolitan Design Center Undergraduate Travel Scholarships
Deadline: Wednesday, February 24, 2010, 4:30 p.m.

OVERVIEW
The 2010 Metropolitan Design Center Undergraduate Travel Scholarships will provide up to two undergraduate students in the College of Design the opportunity for self-directed travel abroad. The scholarships are sponsored by the College of Design Metropolitan Design Center with the conviction that exposure to other cultures is essential for reflecting on our own. Applicants will identify an urban design issue of concern to the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Possible issues for the Scholarship include, but are not limited to, waterfront development, homelessness, open space, public transportation, suburbanization, green infrastructure and affordable housing.

ELIGIBILITY
Open to all undergraduate students in CDes. CLA students majoring in architecture may also apply. Applicants must have a minimum of two semesters remaining after their proposed summer travel and before their graduation.

This year trips are planned to San Francisco to study HIV/AIDS, Atlanta to study urban education, San Diego/Tijuana to study border immigration, and Chicago to study homelessness. As a participant of one of these trips, you will volunteer and meet with local organizations that are concerned with these issues listed. It is a great opportunity to get out of Minnesota for winter break and learn about an issue facing another part of the country and have FUN! Students who participated in the May term trip to Greece & Cyprus will
present the results of their work at Design@Noon on November 18.
Greece & Cyprus are related environments that are undergoing immense
architectural change. Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided by a UN
Buffer Zone, which encompasses hundreds of buildings from the 14th to
the 20th centuries. While in Cyprus, students studied these buildings
and considered their future. In Greece, examined the rich layers of
history from antiquity to the present. They visited urban, island, and
rural environments, confronting topics including tourism, restoration,
materials, the environment, modernity, technology, public space &
community life. The Greece/Cyprus M-term is led by Rachel Iannacone
and Nikolas Bakirtzis.

New Exhibition in Goldstein Museum of Design opening 11/21!

Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller

November 21, 2009 - January 17, 2010; Opening Reception, November 20, 6-8 pm

The Goldstein Museum of Design (GMD) will be the first venue on the national tour of Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller, exploring the collaborative problem-solving design process employed at the world-renowned furniture company, Herman Miller, Inc. Organized and toured by the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA), the exhibition drew from the vast Herman Miller Design Collection, a comprehensive archive of the company's innovative processes and products held by The Henry Ford Dearborn, Michigan THF's. This extraordinary partnership revealed the fascinating story of Herman Miller's success through historical documents, most of which have never before been on public view.

Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller was organized for national tour by the Muskegon Museum of Art, Michigan, founded in 1912 as a division of the Muskegon Public Schools. The exhibition was created in collaboration with The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, through the generous support of Herman Miller, Inc. The exhibition was curated by John Berry, Holland; coordinated by Timothy Chester, Grand Rapids; designed by Judy Hillman and Barb Loveland, Hillman Associates, Saugatuck; and fabricated by Vincent Faust, Kalamazoo.

College of Design Metropolitan Design Center Student Presentations and Reception

Two College of Design students received Metropolitan Design Center (MDC) scholarships for European travel this summer to work on self-directed research projects. Woody Hanson's research project is entitled "Nicosia: Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Sectors" while Austin Lukes researched "Lightrail Public Transportation in Ireland, the Netherlands, and France." The scholarships are sponsored by the MDC with the conviction that exposure to other cultures is essential for reflecting on our own. Hanson and Lukes will present the results of their research on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 6 p.m., followed by a reception in 225 Rapson Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Student Project for Amity among Nations (SPAN)

Since the program began in 1947, more than 2,500 SPANners have visited 93 countries on six continents. Student Project for Amity Among Nations (SPAN), Minnesota's oldest study abroad and one-of-a-kind independent research program, is inviting students, with guidance from faculty advisers, to explore and study summer 2010 in Russia or South Korea.
