The First-Year Leadership Institute (FYLI)

FYLI is an 11 week-long program offered in the spring semester for first-year students designed to help these students enhance leadership skills, foster intrapersonal, interpersonal, ethical and moral development, as well as connect first-year students to the U of M and surrounding communities.

Participants will attend weekly meetings, a weekend retreat, and will be paired with a senior student mentor. In addition, participants will work on Campus Engagement Projects throughout the program to make change for the better on a campus-related issue they care about.

Applications are currently available
and are due by October 22.

Leadership Certification Program (LCP)

The Leadership Certification Program (LCP) is a certification available to students at the University of Minnesota interested in enhancing their leadership knowledge, application, and skills through a series of workshops tailored to their own interests offered over the course of the academic year. The program has no requirements in regards to length of participation and students can start the certificate program at any time during the year. This is an ideal opportunity for students to learn about leadership while allowing for the flexibility to accommodate their busy lives and schedules.

Workshops begin next week (but, again, students can begin whenever they choose) on 22 different leadership topics. A few topics (including 3 required workshops) are offered multiple times for a total of 30 workshops in the fall semester alone!

Students can pre-register for each workshop, sign-up for the LCP, and get more specific information on the LCP website.

University Symposium: Time

Each year the Institute for Advanced Study offers a University Symposium - a series of connected events which explore a critical question or issue from a variety of vantage points. The 2007-08 University Symposium focuses on how we perceive and construct Time.

Scholars across the curriculum view time as a vital element in the production of knowledge, yet they understand and use time in a wide variety of ways. The geologist's examination of time over vast eons, for instance, distinctly differs from the biographer's examination of a single human lifetime, while the physicist and the philosopher, in contrast, may share fundamental ideas about time as one among many dimensions.

The Social Justice Leadership Retreat

The Social Justice Leadership Retreat: Sharing in a Social Justice Journey provides an amazing and unique forum for students to hold open dialogue about issues of cultural pluralism and social justice. 56 students and 18 facilitators take a 3-day retreat to embark on a group journey to explore their individual and group identities, how those identities are impacted by social injustice and oppression, and what steps can be taken to address injustice on campus and other communities.

If you are someone who believes in a safe and inclusive campus, enjoys meeting new people, is comfortable sharing and listening to stories, and is looking for powerful experiences that will last a lifetime, then this retreat is for you!

2007-08 retreat dates are November 9-11 and January 19-21.

Learning Abroad -- Attend a First Step Meeting

If you plan to study abroad during your undergraduate years (and we hope you do), attend a fall semester First Step meeting at the Learning Abroad Center. Meetings are scheduled multiple times during each week of the term. Check the Learning Abroad website for more details. No need to sign up in advance.

Each trip offers students the chance to travel, to explore a social justice or environmental issue, to serve the community that they visit, and to bring their experiences back to youth in Minneapolis/St. Paul. All trips are student led, and we are currently recruiting trip leaders for 2008 trips. Trip destinations include Costa Rica, San Francisco/Bay Area, Guatemala, New York, Seattle/Vancouver, San Diego/Tijuana, Virginia/Appalachian Mountains, and New Orleans.
