Safety in On-line Communities

Do you like to use Facebook, MySpace or any of the various online communication tools that help students meet new people and keep in touch with current friends and classmates? While there are many benefits to these Web sites, some users have experienced unintended consequences because of what they have chosen to post online. If you visit any online communities, ask yourself questions like…

• Am I sharing too much personal information?
• Are there things on my site (pictures, stories, etc.) that that are inappropriate or potentially embarrassing? [Remember - potential employers might be looking at your pages on these sites.]
• Have I chosen the appropriate privacy setting for my account?

For more info about online safety and privacy, visit the Office of Student Affairs web site.
