Unauthorized Design Charrette – Call for Architecture Student Participation

Saturday, March 29, 2008, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Riverview at Upper Landing Apartments
400 Spring Street
St. Paul, MN 55102

Architecture students: this is a great opportunity to get involved, sharpen your skills, contribute to the public discourse and meet other design professionals.

This year the St Paul Chapter of the AIA’s Unauthorized Design Charrette is taking on the Xcel Energy High Bridge Coal-Fired Plant in Saint Paul. This is easily the most fascinating industrial site in Saint Paul! Take this opportunity to exercise or rekindle your design passions unbounded by client expectations, and budgetary constraints. You control the program for the site so take the kind of design liberties you wish real life would allow.

Unauthorized Design gives the profession an opportunity to influence public debate and offer a vision for the future. We are not providing free design services; we are showcasing the talents of architects and other design professionals by being seen in public creating solutions for people who generally have a limited appreciation for the design process. At the end of the day when the public, press and politicians show up, we’ll further the discussion, and engage the Public-at-large in a rigorous debate.

Teams must include at least one AIA member from any Minnesota Chapter. Offices have used Unauthorized Design to build team spirit and friends have re-connected through the Charrette. If you need a team, we will find one for you or you can work alone if you are just that kind of person.

What will be provided:
- Work surfaces, site images and base maps
- Beverages and lunch
- Press releases and outreach to the community and Media
- We aim to provide a lively discussion with invited guests from the PED and the City of Saint Paul.

What to bring:
- Teams should bring what ever they need to investigate, develop and present their ideas.
