Northrop Dance Season is thrilled to present the Martha Graham Dance Company this season with their presentation of Clytemnestra. We hope you can join us for this spectacular event.
Northrop Dance Season presents...
Martha Graham Dance Company - Clytemnestra
"One of the seven wonders of the artistic universe."
- Alan M. Kriegsman, Washington Post
Janet Eilber, Artistic Director

Martha's long time collaborator Isamu Noguchi (a legend in Japanese/American sculpture) makes this presentation a must-see for Art and Design students.

Created by the pioneer of modern dance, Clytemnestra, is the only full-length piece by Martha Graham and is considered a masterpiece of 20th Century modernism. With stunning costumes and a dazzling set, this rare performance evokes the inner spaces of mind and memory, accentuating dramatic scenes of betrayal, revenge, murder, and reconciliation. Literature's most reviled woman, Clytemnestra, the Queen of Mycenae is brought to life through Graham's modern interpretation of religion, politics, and social conundrums.

The Green House: New Designs in Sustainable Architecture & Design

January 12 – March 8, 2009
HGA Gallery, Rapson Hall

The National Building Museum’s acclaimed exhibition The Green House: New Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design is the first to explore the field of green residential design as it reaches a turning point of acceptance by both home builders and the general public.

Photographic images and drawings of 22 projects from around the world document the emergence of a new brand of sustainable building. Architects and builders now view sustainability as a catalyst for creative home design and have also begun to think strategically about the environmental costs of building. These new houses are conceived as systems with extended life cycles that must meet green standards throughout the design, construction, and living process. Environmental responsibility is an integral, but not always conspicuous, aspect of the contemporary house.

Project architects such as Rick Joy, Jennifer Siegel and William McDonough (US), Stuhlmacher + Korteknie (the Netherlands), Peter Carmichael (Australia), Werner Sobek (Germany), Shigeru Ban (Japan), and many others are presented in this exhibition.

The influence has come full circle and dress for sport is now influenced by street-wear. This mutual influence shifts from sportswear to streetwear and back again, leaving viewers to ask: Is it sportswear or streetwear?

Building Ties 2008

Runs May 3 – June 8, 2008
Hennepin History Museum

Under the direction of Prof. Tasoulla Hadjiyanni, third-year Interior Design students responded to the needs of Mexicans, one of the Twin Cities’ largest immigrant groups, as well as the Ojibwe people, one of Minnesota’s largest Native groups. Trained to provide for human welfare through the design of interior environments, the students created culturally sensitive design solutions, i.e. residential designs that support diverse ways of living. At the same time, on the conceptual level the designs speak of ‘what does it mean to be a Mexican or an Ojibwe?’

Rethinking the University: Knowledge, Labor, Value

April 11 – 13, 2008
Free and open to the public

This conference has been collectively organized by graduate students to bring together thinkers from across the campus community and national academic community to address the "crisis" of the university as it has continually been transformed by neoliberal forces. The recent AFSCME strike at the University of Minnesota and other academic labor struggles continue to expose the university in crisis, yet we need to further develop both our intellectual and organizational capacities to effectively address these crises. Hopefully this conference will be productive in discussing and thinking through these issues, and bring together a community bound to the university in crisis.
