Architecture Students to help with HGTV’s “Rebuilding Together”

Starting April 28th, Rebuilding Together affiliates in 5 cities across the country will be participating in Change the World week in partnership with HGTV.

Architecture students from the College of Design will be participating in one of the local projects, a full exterior remodel including new windows, new siding where needed, and new paint and some remodeling on the interior at a home in St Paul.

Be a part of an exciting opening party for the Techno Textiles exhibition at the Goldstein Museum of Design. Their newest exhibition looks at technological advances in industrial fabrics being used in a wide variety of applications: from architecture to medicine.

Little Red Oil Can Award

Nomination deadline: Thursday, May 1st, 2008 at 4:30 p.m..

The St. Paul Board of Colleges (SPBOC) is pleased to announce they are accepting nominations for the Little Red Oil Can Award.

The Little Red Oil Can was first given in 1916 as an expression of affection and appreciation to Dean E.M. Freeman, one of the first deans on St. Paul campus. This was not an award for service, although unselfish service was one of the criteria. All of the past recipients demonstrated a special concern for others, and interest in the general welfare of the community, and were held in high esteem within the campus structure.

Youth study the personal experiences of these amazing world leaders and then engage in service-learning activities that address local needs.

Work at or Attend the Split Rock Arts Program

Registration for this summer's 2008 Split Rock Arts Program is now open. For a roster of this year's workshops and retreats in creative writing, visual art, and design, please visit the Split Rock Arts Program web site.

The Split Rock Arts Program is also hiring Program Assistants. The Program Assistant is responsible for supporting the successful day-to-day, on-site operations of the Split Rock Arts Program (SR) during the workshop season, including pre-season preparation; classroom, studio, and supply management; office and event staffing; troubleshooting; quality assurance; hosting of faculty and students; and post-season evaluation and clean-up. This position is a seven-week, 30 hour-per-week (approximate), $15-per-hour position with the Split Rock Arts Program. Program Assistant would work a total of 40 hours between May 27-June 7, 2008 and approximately 30 hours per week from June 9-August 8, 2008.

Fulbright Grants provide generous support for American citizens to study, conduct research, engage in creative work, or teach English abroad for a year in approximately 100 foreign countries. College students in all fields of study who will graduate May 2009 or earlier are eligible to apply for 2009-10 Fulbright Grants. Applicants should have strong academic records. Applications for 2009-10 Grants must be submitted by September 8, 2008 for a campus review and interview process. These informational sessions will cover the Fulbright Teaching Assistant grants, which enable recent college graduates to assist in English language classrooms abroad, as well as the better-known Fulbright Full Grants for study, research, or creative work.

Green Shorts: An Environmental Film & Video Contest

Open Call for Submissions

The Sustainability Studies Minor and The Bell Museum of Natural History invite filmmakers of all ages and levels of experience to create a short film or video that addresses sustainability and environmental issues. How do you or the people in your community interact with the environment? Is there a better way?

They are accepting films from both established and first-time filmmakers. By competing in the Green Shorts Film & Video Contest you will have the opportunity to make a statement about an issue that is important to you, to promote a solution to a current problem, and/or to create a vision for a sustainable tomorrow.

Top films selected by jury will be screened at the Bell Museum on April 25th as part of the Seeing Climate Change Film Festival. Prizes will be awarded for best film or video, best film or video from a first-time filmmaker, best student film and audience choice.

The Solar Decathalon is Now a Student Group

The Solar Decathlon is now an official student group!

The Solar Decathlon brings student teams from universities across the world to compete in designing, building and operating highly energy-efficient, completely solar-powered houses. The teams will assemble their homes on the National Mall in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. and open them to the public in September of 2009. 2009 Solar Decathlon

The Solar Decathlon brings student teams from universities across the world to compete in designing, building and operating highly energy-efficient, completely solar-powered houses. Search for Shelter Design Charrette

February 15th – 17th, 2008

This charrette brings together architects and non-profit housing organizations for one intensive weekend of design. The goal is to assist with building projects submitted by these agencies whom lack the funds to hire an architect. Teams of architects, students and other designers work throughout the weekend to create viable solutions to their assigned project and the resulting boards become a visual tool for the housing organization to acquire funding, educate about their cause, or serve as preliminary building plans.

Representatives of Rotary International will discuss the Ambassadorial, Cultural Ambassadorial, and World Peace Scholarships, the world's largest privately funded scholarship program for international education. Do you like to use Facebook, MySpace or any of the various online communication tools that help students meet new people and keep in touch with current friends and classmates? While there are many benefits to these Web sites, some users have experienced unintended consequences because of what they have chosen to post online. If you visit any online communities, ask yourself questions like…

• Am I sharing too much personal information?
• Are there things on my site (pictures, stories, etc.) that that are inappropriate or potentially embarrassing? [Remember - potential employers might be looking at your pages on these sites.]
• Have I chosen the appropriate privacy setting for my account?

Volunteer Opportunity: Build College Awareness with Kids

This year 2,700 third graders attending Minneapolis public schools will participate in the first-ever Minneapolis I Know I Can College Awareness Day. Volunteers will read and discuss I Know I Can, a children’s book that introduces college awareness in a context that young children can understand. The event will bring over 200 volunteers into classrooms to share the significance of making college attendance an aspiration.

Only a small time commitment is required - one hour for the event and one hour for an information session.

The Goldstein Museum of Design currently has openings for temporary gallery greeters and possibly office assistants over the winter break. Part time or full time work is available between December 19 and January 19. Thank a Teacher

Has there been a teacher this past semester that has made a positive difference for you? Perhaps the teacher's engaging strategies in the classroom has inspired a new area of interest for you or you may have received some valuable advice or encouragement-- or maybe the teacher simply made you feel welcome and comfortable at the U of MN.

If so, in the spirit of the season as the semester draws to a close, consider spending a few minutes to send a "thank you.” Complete a simple online form and the Center for Teaching and Learning will issue a special certificate to the teacher. Designs Wanted For Mini-Golf

Art and architecture merge with miniature golf in this open call to create holes for the next Walker in the Rough–" a new, temporary mini-golf course at the Walker Art Center.

Walker in the Rough returns in 2008 to the grass that will house the Walker’s future park, on the western edge of the museum. Your job, as a potential designer, is creating one of the 10 workable, playable holes that will dot the course. A panel of curators, artists, architects and one golf pro will judge the entries. Deadline for submissions is Jan. 14, 2008.

The course, which opens Memorial Day weekend and closes in early September, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Organizers are encouraging designers to create tie-ins to the traveling exhibition Design for the Other 90%, which comes to the Walker in spring 2008. Proposals should also address issues such as water, communication, shelter, transportation, and sustainability. Extra consideration will be given to holes made of recycled materials or materials that can be recycled.

Summer Cultural Programs Student Advisory Committee

Summer Cultural Programs is assembling a Student Advisory Committee who will oversee programming and funding decisions for summer 2008.

'Summer Cultural Programs' provides support for the various organizations that sponsor cultural arts events on campus. The centerpiece of the program is the noon concert series held almost daily on Northrop Plaza during Summer Term.
The time commitment for committee members is minimal, 4 or 5 one-hour meetings between November 2007 and April 2008. Responsibilities include advising on programming and budgetary decisions for summer 2008, preparing a funding request for summer 2009 and 2010 and presenting it to the Student Services Fees Committee.

Each year the Minnesota State Senate needs about 60-70 student interns to help out with various responsibilities at the State Capitol building in St. Paul. This information session is for students who may be interested in interning during the 2008 legislative session. Undergraduates and advisers in all majors are invited to attend. Academic credit may be earned for the internship and applications will be available at the info session.

The First-Year Leadership Institute (FYLI)

FYLI is an 11 week-long program offered in the spring semester for first-year students designed to help these students enhance leadership skills, foster intrapersonal, interpersonal, ethical and moral development, as well as connect first-year students to the U of M and surrounding communities.

Participants will attend weekly meetings, a weekend retreat, and will be paired with a senior student mentor. In addition, participants will work on Campus Engagement Projects throughout the program to make change for the better on a campus-related issue they care about.

Applications are currently available
and are due by October 22.

Leadership Certification Program (LCP)

The Leadership Certification Program (LCP) is a certification available to students at the University of Minnesota interested in enhancing their leadership knowledge, application, and skills through a series of workshops tailored to their own interests offered over the course of the academic year. The program has no requirements in regards to length of participation and students can start the certificate program at any time during the year. This is an ideal opportunity for students to learn about leadership while allowing for the flexibility to accommodate their busy lives and schedules.

Workshops begin next week (but, again, students can begin whenever they choose) on 22 different leadership topics. A few topics (including 3 required workshops) are offered multiple times for a total of 30 workshops in the fall semester alone!

Students can pre-register for each workshop, sign-up for the LCP, and get more specific information on the LCP website.

The Social Justice Leadership Retreat

The Social Justice Leadership Retreat: Sharing in a Social Justice Journey provides an amazing and unique forum for students to hold open dialogue about issues of cultural pluralism and social justice. 56 students and 18 facilitators take a 3-day retreat to embark on a group journey to explore their individual and group identities, how those identities are impacted by social injustice and oppression, and what steps can be taken to address injustice on campus and other communities.

Y Immersion

Looking to do something fun this winter and/or spring break? Want some leadership experience? Interested in doing service learning projects? If YES is your answer to any of these questions, then check out the University YMCA’s Immersion/EBP Program!

The Y Immersion/EBP program offers alternative break trips over winter, spring, and summer breaks. Each trip offers students the chance to travel, to explore a social justice or environmental issue, to serve the community that they visit, and to bring their experiences back to youth in Minneapolis/St. Paul. All trips are student led, and we are currently recruiting trip leaders for 2008 trips. Trip destinations include Costa Rica, San Francisco/Bay Area, Guatemala, New York, Seattle/Vancouver, San Diego/Tijuana, Virginia/Appalachian Mountains, and New Orleans.

Volunteer Opportunity for Students Interested in Architecture, Design or History

LEGO(R) Architecture Building Event for Children and Families

McRae Park on 46th and Chicago in South Minneapolis

All About Family is a community organization that fosters the development of solid families in the Twin Cities by providing them with resources, activities and opportunities that encourage and build stronger families.

They are in need of student volunteers to help children and parents build a model of the Hiawatha Train Station and participate in a discussion of the Pullman Porters of the railroad. A lunch will be served and this event is FREE and open to the public.
