Fulbright Info Sessions for Undergraduates

Fulbright Grants provide generous support for American citizens to study, conduct research, engage in creative work, or teach English abroad for a year in approximately 100 foreign countries. College students in all fields of study who will graduate May 2009 or earlier are eligible to apply for 2009-10 Fulbright Grants. Applicants should have strong academic records. Applications for 2009-10 Grants must be submitted by September 8, 2008 for a campus review and interview process. These informational sessions will cover the Fulbright Teaching Assistant grants, which enable recent college graduates to assist in English language classrooms abroad, as well as the better-known Fulbright Full Grants for study, research, or creative work.

Summer Service Experience in New Orleans

Tulane University's Center for Public Service created the Semester in NOLA Program, a program which seeks students from across the country and around the world who wish to lend their energy to the New Orleans rebuilding efforts. Semester in NOLA is both a service and an academic program. Students will complete an intensive service assignment with New Orleans community partners while participating in an interdisciplinary course taught by Tulane faculty.

Semester in NOLA will provide students the opportunity to reflect on the lessons taught by Katrina and to bring these lessons back to their own community. Students will learn about the rich New Orleans culture and its unique past.

Developed as an extension of the highly successful “Travels in Typography” class offered by the University of Minnesota’s Design Institute, join instructor and printing historian, Bill Moran of Blinc Publishing for a tour of some of the finest typographic treasures the European continent has to offer. Each stop on our trip will provide the opportunity to research, set type and print in Madrid, Mainz and Venice. In addition, we’ll examine the art, architecture and politics that fostered the growth of printing in the Renaissance.

National Student Exchange Application Deadline - February 8th

The National Student Exchange (NSE) allows undergraduate students to study for up to one year at another school within the US, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands. Tuition is usually equivalent to what the student currently pays to the University of Minnesota, and most financial aid packages apply. Credits earned through NSE will transfer back to the U of M. Our panel of U faculty and staff experts will offer an inside view of the application process for these exceptional opportunities to study at Oxford, Cambridge, and universities throughout the UK and Ireland. Several of the scholarships require institutional endorsement; instructions for submitting an application for the campus endorsement process will be available at the info session, and thereafter from Sally Lieberman.

The application process starts this spring for U of M-Twin Cities for juniors, seniors and recent grads interested in scholarships to begin graduate study in Fall 2009. Interested freshman and sophomores are also welcome to attend the info session.

Rotary Scholarships for Study Abroad in 2009-2010

Representatives of Rotary International will discuss the Ambassadorial, Cultural Ambassadorial, and World Peace Scholarships, the world's largest privately funded scholarship program for international education. Opportunities are offered for study abroad in nearly 100 host countries, including academic year scholarships, multi-year scholarships, and scholarships for 3-6 months of intensive language study and cultural immersion. Awards range from $10,000 to $23,000, depending on the type and length of the program. Some of the scholarships have language proficiency requirements. Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and Graduates may apply. Must be a citizen of a country with Rotary Clubs. Applicants should have strong academic records and a commitment to service.

Study Abroad with IRSEP - Scholarship Funded

Study abroad opportunities in 2008-2009 are available through the International Reciprocal Student Exchange Program (IRSEP). What is wonderful about IRSEP is that it is fully scholarship supported. The scholarships cover not only tuition and fees but also room and board for the entire academic year! Recipients are responsible only for airfare and incidentals. Off Campus Study with National Student Exchange

Ever wanted to spend a whole semester or year studying in an exciting place like Hawaii, California, Florida, Alaska, New York, Puerto Rico, or Iowa?

The National Student Exchange (NSE) is a network of about 200 schools across the United States, Canada, and the US territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. You can study at any of these schools for a semester or a full year. Most U of M students continue to pay U of M tuition while on exchange, and all of your credits should transfer back to the U of M.

HECUA offers off-campus study programs that address some of the most important issues of our time. Its Twin Cities programs focus on the environment, the arts, writing, and urban studies. Each is one semester long and incorporates classroom studies, an internship, and field work.

Today, HECUA offers off-campus programs in Bangladesh, Ecuador, Northern Ireland, Norway, and the Twin Cities. This info session will highlight the Twin Cities programs.

HECUA programs are one semester-long and students earn 16 U of M credits. They incorporate classroom seminars with extensive hands-on work in the community and a 20-hour per week professional internship.

Travel Opportunities to Argentina, Bulgaria and Senegal with SPAN

The Student Project for Amity among Nations (SPAN), Minnesota’s oldest study abroad program, will offer information sessions to learn more about unique independent research and study abroad programs during the summer of 2008. Students who participate in SPAN will earn eight academic credits for in-depth, pre-departure coursework, eight weeks of self-designed field research in country, and completion of an extensive research paper.

Learning Abroad -- Attend a First Step Meeting

If you plan to study abroad during your undergraduate years (and we hope you do), attend a fall semester First Step meeting at the Learning Abroad Center. Y Immersion

Looking to do something fun this winter and/or spring break? Want some leadership experience? Interested in doing service learning projects? If YES is your answer to any of these questions, then check out the University YMCA’s Immersion/EBP Program!

The Y Immersion/EBP program offers alternative break trips over winter, spring, and summer breaks. Each trip offers students the chance to travel, to explore a social justice or environmental issue, to serve the community that they visit, and to bring their experiences back to youth in Minneapolis/St. Paul. All trips are student led, and we are currently recruiting trip leaders for 2008 trips. Trip destinations include Costa Rica, San Francisco/Bay Area, Guatemala, New York, Seattle/Vancouver, San Diego/Tijuana, Virginia/Appalachian Mountains, and New Orleans.
