Basic Math Tutor, Organization name: North End & Franklin Elementary
North End and Franklin Elementary Schools are proud to offer our Saturday tutoring program beginning in January 2011! The Saturday tutoring program began in 2008 as a partnership between the University Academies for Boys and Girls at North End and alumni of the UMN branch of Kappa Alpha Psi, an internationally-renowned African-American fraternity, to provide our students with a unique enrichment opportunity.
The goals of the program are two-fold:
1) to secure students' math skills so they will be better prepared to test; and
2) to strengthen community relationships and give students the chance to learn from consistent, caring role models.
As our school community grows and changes, we are expanding this popular, well-attended program to serve 40 children this year. In light of this expansion, we are looking outside our foundational partnership with the Kappas to increase tutor capacity. I'm reaching out to you today to ask for help in providing these students with the community support they need to become our future leaders. With a time commitment of just 12 hours (4 days) over 12 weeks, this program is a convenient way for you and your coworkers to offer your time in a way that truly counts!
The program occurs on Saturdays 9:30am-12pm from 1/22/11 to 4/16/11. There will be a required volunteer training on Thursday, 1/13/11 6-7pm (can be rescheduled if volunteer cannot attend). The program includes breakfast for the students, an hour and fifteen minutes of math tutoring, and 45 minutes of gym fun time with tutors. If you're looking for an enjoyable way to spend time with smart and active kids in your St. Paul community, this is it!
