Courage Retreat Volunteers Needed!

Ashley Bruun is currently a teacher at MN International Middle School where she primarily teaches students that are refugees from Eastern Africa. On February 24th, her 7th and 8th grade students will be attending a courage retreat at the Colin Powell Center in Minneapolis (address: 2924 4th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55408-2438) from 8:30 am to 1:45 pm. Volunteers are asked to find their own transportation to the Colin Powell Center and arrive by 7:45 am as there will be a mini small group leader orientation that is crucial to the success of the retreat. Expectations for the small group leaders include facilitating three small group discussions to their assigned group of 6 to 7 students, participating in the opening and games at the beginning of the retreat, actively engaging in the topic-based talks throughout the retreat, and most importantly serving as role models for the students. This would give you a great opportunity to learn about and work with a diverse population. Not only that, but it would be a great event that could be used to get volunteer hours and put on your resumes. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers.

The courage retreat is run by an organization known as Youth Frontiers. Youth Frontiers is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, and they exist to help schools develop both smart kids and good kids. For over twenty years, Youth Frontiers has been transforming the day-to-day experience in schools across America by providing dynamic and meaningful programs designed to create a more positive school community. They challenge students and educators to think critically about how they treat themselves and others, and inspiring the silent majority of students to help make their school a better place. If this is something you're interested in volunteering for and/or need more information you can e-mail Ashley at or call her at 612-816-0847.
