Read With Me & Read To Achieve Volunteering
Read With Me is a one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program through the Saint Paul Public Library. Your role as a tutor would include tutoring a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade student in literacy skills. Reading is an essential tool to enable a person to have a successful life by allowing them to achieve in school, participate in their communities, and obtain a sustainable career. Students also benefit from having a consistent adult in his or her life. You become a positive role model, and hopefully you will create a positive relationship that both of you enjoy!
Read To Achieve is a literacy program in the Saint Paul Public Library. Tutors are paired with a student in 4th-8th grade for one hour per week. The tutor will serve as a positive mentor for the student while helping increase confidence in and enjoyment of reading. Tutors are matched at either the Rondo Community Outreach Library or the Rice Street Branch Library between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00 Mondays-Thursdays or on Sundays between 1:00 and 4:00 for one hour per week.
These are a great way to work one-on-one with a student, especially if you like to read. The library is a great, diverse place to get involved, as well.
Tutors are placed with a student and meet with them for one hour per week. Please plan on committing to the program for the duration of the semester. Pairs can meet at any of the Saint Paul Public Library branches, but flexibility on the part of the tutor is required because the student waiting list varies greatly depending on library branch and time of year. A list of the branch locations can be found at http://www.sppl.org/locations. Training and materials are provided and paid for by the Saint Paul Public Library. Finally, if the tutor is interested and the library approves, tutors can meet with one to several students on a weekly basis.
