Kate Garfield, Business Marketing Spring 2011 Graduate, shares her success

Kate Garfield
CEHD Degree program: Business and Marketing Education
Graduation Year: May 2011
Employer: Cargill Inc.
Position: Sales Account Representative

How did you learn about your current position?
I saw on GoldPASS, the U of MN job posting system, that Cargill was going to be on campus to interview for Sales Account Representative positions. I happened to search 'events on campus' in GoldPASS and saw that Cargill was also hosting an information session.
I attended the information session to learn more about the company first hand from Cargill employees. It turned out that one of the Cargill employees presenting at the information session was going to be interviewing for the Sales Account Representative position that I applied for through GoldPASS. I talked with both Cargill employees about the position and what they were looking for in a candidate.

How did you help yourself stand out from all the other applicants?
In my cover letter, I made sure to mention the information session that I attended and the names of the Cargill employees that I met there.
In the second interview, I expressed interest in the position and the company, explained my career goals and asked for the job.

Did you utilize career services? If so, what was your experience like?
I met with Jeannie Stumne at the Career Center and she helped me improve my interviewing skills in order to be an effective in my interviews and to stand out from the other candidates. She was a huge help and a factor in my success.

When do you start your position?
I will be starting my new position in June!
